I’m sure that people, especially from Africa and Australia may have heard this one a fair few times before.
“OMG, you’re from Africa??? Wow, do you keep a rhino in your backyard??”
Or.
“Australia! So do you see kangaroos out on the streets??”

Some of the responses my South Africa friends have given are hilarious though. :P
Person: Wow, so do you keep lions as pets??
Friend: *to brother* Omg. We forgot to lock up tigger!
Brother: O.O Oh NOOOO!
Person: Who’s tigger?
Friend: Our pet lion. I think we left her on the street!

Another response I found hilarious.
Friend: Yeah, we keep our hippo in the swimming pool, and our pet giraffe? Really helpful during autumn! Get’s all the leaves down quick…

So just wanted to know if anyone else has had any weird questions like that regarding native animals living in our backyards. :P

No, this is NOT my backyard. But if my backyard looked like this, I might have lions in it? :P

Damn, redback spiders. I remember them when I used to play in the caves at the back of our house in Alford Point (when it was all bush - now it’s a suburb lol).

One thing I love about the Caribbean is you can just walk along the rocks and see the colorful fish swimming. No snorkelling necessary :)

I have never seen a Red Back, thanks be to God. XD
I’m kinda getting tired of all the weird animal questions though. i mean surely people would know that an animal such as a LION could never be domesticated…

I saw some dung beetles collecting their daily rations off the sidewalk recently. Didn’t realize they had them in Spain. Prior to this, I’d only seen them in National Geographic or other nature films. :p

One thing I loved about living in Venice was the constant presence of hummingbirds.

It was great to see pods of dolphins off the coast in Australia. Anyone remember when the humpback whales swam into Sydney Harbour and made love for a week? “Whales Make Love In Harbour” - honest-to-God frontpage headlines, lol.

I remember the fish in the Caribbean. Up to a metre long, eating out of your hands at the shoreline. When I was pregnant a butterfly landed on my stomach and stayed there for over an hour.

I have special memories of staying with a dragonfly while he died in Canada. The way butterflies danced on Commercial Drive. Being in mosaic park in the midst of a pollen “rain storm” - puffs of white just raining down. Very magical.

When I was in Canada every totem animal I felt a connection with at the time always turned up faithfully. I loved sitting in my backyard and watching dozens and dozens of dragonflies flying around.
