I was reading an interesting suggestion from expat inspirer about writing our life stories in 6 words and thought this would be fun to do!

“I’ve been to the Families in Global Transition conference in Houston and had a wonderful time among friends old and and new, learned a lot, laughed a lot and drank too many margaritas. I was inspired by one of my fellow speakers, Apple Gidley, who suggested we might write our life stories (bear it in mind that those who attended FIGT were ‘global nomads’ like me) in six words.

She gave the examples of:

Roast beef to barbecue via noodles

For sale baby shoes never worn

I guess mine might be:

lakes to canals via sand dunes

what would yours be?

    I LOVE urs!!!

However, for me, I don’t wanna repeat EVER AGAIN!
I dn’t ever wanna crawl again!!!! (nor fly, nor land)

    My other version would be:

“Root, Unroot, Root, Unroot…. Root, STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

(My conclusion is: STOP!!!!! This may be different from some, bc ME? I wanna STOP!!!!!!!!…. the cycle)

    SETTLING DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It’s my dream

    Move again?!?!!? It’s my FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!……………….

    Peter Says:

    Hi Jolie,

This alludes to the fact that TCKs often GROW UP FAST (like a bamboo leaf) compared to their same age peers. They may exude an air of maturity because they have had a more worldly experience. For me, that meant leaving home to go to boarding school at 6 and flying across the world from Malaysia to Manchester, UK at the age of 8 years old unaccompanied by an adult.

However, during my 20’s (and 30’s and 40’s) when other friends were settling down with careers and raising kids with their life partners I was still trying to find out which country I wanted to live in and what career to pursue. So this is why the sense of belonging and making a commitment to a relationship or career or even a place to live (i.e. PUTTING DOWN ROOTS) developed slowly in me.

    Thanks for asking!!

    Peter

P.S. The banana is yellow (Chinese) on the outside with white (English) on the inside. That’s me too. Egg is opposite !! Both are good.

    Jolie Says:

    Hi Peter,

I am very glad that u explained both six words.
Bc I didn’t get banana and egg either.

I mean, I know that expression since I am myself a banana too. But since I didn’t know ur 1 too, so I didn’t know that u were using that metaphor here… (Didn’t make that connection)

(Americans and Chineses are the ones who knows the banana and egg expression. I grew up in Latin America, so I bet they don’t know it, for they are brown ^^ can’t know many bananas nor eggs)

    Anyways…

I would like to hear ur reasons for “Belonging is being present amidst longing”

    I hope it wouldn’t bother u. I think it’d b pretty interesting too =P

Which is familiar? Which is strange?

What is common? What is rare?
What is “standard”, I don’t care. (As if there was)

    Where is stayable?
    Where is bearable?

    Poem: Low-Keyed:

I think it would be wrong
To write my anger into a song
It would make the song too long
And the emotions of it too strong

The more I explain “it” to whom hasn’t been there
    The more I despair
I can tell the worthlessness of my attempt right in their stare
    I hold my temper

That was when I had decided to stay low-keyed
    Which is wisest indeed
My goal is to be strong and to succeed
Being liked and understood by everyone isn’t what I can control nor what I need

I had decided to stay low-keyed
I had decided to stay low-keyed
I had decided to stay low-keyed
    Yes, I had decided!

    Poem: Broken Mirrow:

As a Foreigner, you always have your privileges.
As a Hidden Immigrant, you also have your rights.
As an Adopted, you’d have to show it to the world.
As a Mirrow, what are their challenges?
I have no idea since I have virtually never been.

Although I know there’s no place on Earth I can call it my home
And understand I’d be a foreigner wherever I go
Of course I know. I do know. Everything. Of course I know all.
I can bear this no more.

    Peter Says:

    Hi Jolie,

To explain about the belonging poem…
For me, and I perhaps other TCKs, we are looking for a place where we can belong. But we may suffer from unresolved grief from people and places we left behind…

    Now “Be”+”longing” = Belonging.

So my sense of longing for someplace and wanting to belong, is part of who I am. I recognise that I need to “be” with that “longing” in the present moment - to own a deep sadness for what I have lost. This way I can re-integrate the lost parts of who I am (”re”-”member” myself) and learn to see my meandering life path as a unique blessing.

A bit cryptic I know; I am so glad you asked!! ;-)
