Write your life story in 6 words

I was reading an interesting suggestion from expat inspirer about writing our life stories in 6 words and thought this would be fun to do!

“I’ve been to the Families in Global Transition conference in Houston and had a wonderful time among friends old and and new, learned a lot, laughed a lot and drank too many margaritas. I was inspired by one of my fellow speakers, Apple Gidley, who suggested we might write our life stories (bear it in mind that those who attended FIGT were ‘global nomads’ like me) in six words.

She gave the examples of:

Roast beef to barbecue via noodles

For sale baby shoes never worn

I guess mine might be:

lakes to canals via sand dunes

what would yours be?

  • margo
    MsMerising,
Ha! Probably! But can you beat this story? When the internet was first happening, back in the nineties, I was one of the first hardcore Ebay junkies, back before the day of proxy bidding. I was in the middle of a trip with my boyfriend and his parents to Italy. I had lived there years ago, so I was the official "guide", and this was their first ever time out of the country. (I know, I know, what was I thinking when I hooked up with him?!) Anyways, we were at a restaurant in Assisi, celebrating my birthday, and I actually had to leave the restaurant and run down the death defying cobblestone streets of Assisi in my high heels (Clickclackclickclackclickclack) in order to search for an internet cafe so that I could get in the last frantic bid for a pair of killer shoes listed on Ebay that I had been bidding on for 10 days! I was actually in a cold sweat over it, because I was bidding on pair of Manolo Blahnik backless kitten heel mules, with a dalmation print and matching chocolate brown mink trim! I HAD to have them, and I got the last bid in. Sorry to say that when I staggered back, breathless into the restaurant with a pink flush on my face, my inlaws were not amused. In fact, they suggested that I might consider some type of counseling. What can I say, they are now gone from my life, and my fabu Blahniks have been the smash hit of many a party!
Oh well,at least I have my priorities in order...
ps: I had to cut myself off of Ebay for about 5 years, after that incident.
  • lmao @ MARGO

I got addicted to eBay too, but I was like that with un-used "intimate" apparel (Vaninna Vesperini, Spoylt, Agent Provocateur etc). I have not logged in for WEEKS. I wass running myself into too much debt, lol.

I have abandoned work, school and outing to bid...birds of a feather, babe..l.birds of a feather :P Or, obsessive-compulsive people...what can you do with us???

    :D

    lol

    <wp:comment_content>Hi Jolie,

This alludes to the fact that TCKs often GROW UP FAST (like a bamboo leaf) compared to their same age peers. They may exude an air of maturity because they have had a more worldly experience. For me, that meant leaving home to go to boarding school at 6 and flying across the world from Malaysia to Manchester, UK at the age of 8 years old unaccompanied by an adult.

However, during my 20's (and 30's and 40's) when other friends were settling down with careers and raising kids with their life partners I was still trying to find out which country I wanted to live in and what career to pursue. So this is why the sense of belonging and making a commitment to a relationship or career or even a place to live (i.e. PUTTING DOWN ROOTS) developed slowly in me.

    Thanks for asking!!

    Peter

P.S. The banana is yellow (Chinese) on the outside with white (English) on the inside. That's me too. Egg is opposite !! Both are good.</wp:comment_content>

    <wp:comment_content>Hi Peter,

I am very glad that u explained both six words.
Bc I didn't get banana and egg either.

I mean, I know that expression since I am myself a banana too. But since I didn't know ur 1 too, so I didn't know that u were using that metaphor here... (Didn't make that connection)

(Americans and Chineses are the ones who knows the banana and egg expression. I grew up in Latin America, so I bet they don't know it, for they are brown ^^ can't know many bananas nor eggs)

    Anyways...

I would like to hear ur reasons for "Belonging is being present amidst longing"

    I hope it wouldn't bother u. I think it'd b pretty interesting too =P</wp:comment_content>

How is usual? How is queer?
How is lucky? How is fair?

Who is normal? Who is weird?
Who is envied? Who is feared?

When is funny? When is lame?
When is acceptable? When is a shame?

Which is civilized? Which is savage?
Which is familiar? Which is strange?

What is common? What is rare?
What is "standard", I don't care. (As if there was)

    Where is liveable?
    Where is stayable?
    Where is bearable?

    Who are YOU to say?
    Who are YOU to say?

    I just LOL.
    I just LOL.

    Who is pretentious?
    Who is obnoxious?

    I just LOL.

    <wp:comment_content>Poem: Low-Keyed:

I think it would be wrong
To write my anger into a song
It would make the song too long
And the emotions of it too strong

The more I explain "it" to whom hasn't been there
    The more I despair
I can tell the worthlessness of my attempt right in their stare
    I hold my temper

That was when I had decided to stay low-keyed
    Which is wisest indeed
My goal is to be strong and to succeed
Being liked and understood by everyone isn't what I can control nor what I need

I had decided to stay low-keyed
I had decided to stay low-keyed
I had decided to stay low-keyed
    Yes, I had decided!

    Poem: Broken Mirrow:

As a Foreigner, you always have your privileges.
As a Hidden Immigrant, you also have your rights.
As an Adopted, you'd have to show it to the world.
As a Mirrow, what are their challenges?
I have no idea since I have virtually never been.</wp:comment_content>

    <wp:comment_content>Hi Jolie,

To explain about the belonging poem...
For me, and I perhaps other TCKs, we are looking for a place where we can belong. But we may suffer from unresolved grief from people and places we left behind...

    Now "Be"+"longing" = Belonging.

So my sense of longing for someplace and wanting to belong, is part of who I am. I recognise that I need to "be" with that "longing" in the present moment - to own a deep sadness for what I have lost. This way I can re-integrate the lost parts of who I am ("re"-"member" myself) and learn to see my meandering life path as a unique blessing.

A bit cryptic I know; I am so glad you asked!! ;-)

i love the 'belonging' one. thanks!
it says so nicely what i feel... ( am fluent in many languages but ironically enough often lack the ability to express what i feel in any language ) . i understood straigth away what it means .
without any explanation. hence i think its not cryptic if you recognise the feeling. the roots leaf one i understood straight away too although i prefer to phrase it differently .</wp:comment_content>
