What is the best food in the world?

We traveled a lot in life, and ate plenty of interesting dishes from various cultures. I was wondering what is your favorite food, out of all the countries you’ve traveled?

For me personally, Indian food is the best. Tandoori, daal makhani, and some delicious poori aloo!

Tandoori chicken is a chicken dish that originated in India. The chicken is marinated in a yogurt seasoned with either prepared tandoori masala. It is traditionally moderately hot, but the heat is toned down to a “mild” taste level in most Western nations. Cayenne, red chili powder, or other spices give it its red colour. Turmeric produces a yellow-orange colour. In some modern versions red and yellow food colouring is used instead. It is traditionally cooked at high temperatures in an earthen oven (i.e. tandoor), but can also be prepared on a traditional grill. Wikipedia

    Oh you poor fools... You've hit my one true passion, I love food more than I've ever loved any woman.

    1. Slow roasted pork smothered in homemade mole' sauce.
    2. Adobo Chicken.
    3. Jerk Chicken.
    4. Fried Conch (giant sea snails from the Caribbean).
    5. Conch salad (finely chopped raw conch, tomatoes, jalepenos, cilantro, and fresh lime juice).
    6. Jamaican meat pies (don't ask what type of meat goes in these, sometimes you don't want to know, usually flavored with curry and jerk seasonings).
    7. Double Doubles (flatbread, chickpeas, mango or tamarind chutney, street food in Trinidad).
    8. Pepperpot (meat, peppers, cassava root, callaloo leaves, coconut milk, and cinnamon).
    9. Sorrel (a drink made from hibiscus flowers, spices, and honey/sugar)
    10. Ginger Beer (both nonalcoholic and fermented varieties, the high ginger content is the key for me)
    11. Crystallized ginger.
    12. Orange peels (remove the fruit and scrape off the white pith leaving only the skin and zest, boil in simple syrup to hardball, separate and roll in sugar to dry).
    13. Fried Plantains.
    14. Curry goat.
    15. Papadums
    16. Tom Kai Gai (chicken, coconut milk, lemongrass, and kai soup).
    17. Phad Thai.
    18. Chili Crab.
    19. Uni Sushi.
    20. Unagi Sushi.

    Thats just the top twenty. I can go on for days and never even mention foods from the US. Man what I wouldn't give for a cold D&G; Ginger Beer, a plate of jerk chicken, rice and peas, collards, and some mango ice cream for desert right now... Just thinking about it takes me back to Mandeville parish.

    The food in Singapore is absolutely phenomenal. My tolerance for spices has really rocketed and my husband thinks it's really funny whenever I reach for sambal or those little pickled jalapenos and put them on everything.

    But to ask a TCK to choose what food is "best"...lol are you kidding me?? I'll take a stab at it though. In no particular order, these are foods I would hop on a plane and travel for hours to have:

    1. Chili crab with steam-fried buns
    2. Roti prata
    3. Nasi goreng
    4. Kaya toast
    5. Bibingka
    6. Pork blood stew with steamed rice cakes
    7. Palak paneer and rogan josh and naan bread, washed down with mango lassi
    8. Black ink pasta - the best ever was in a little trattoria in Bali
    9. Uni sushi
    10. the Reuben sandwiches my brother makes whenever I visit him; or the biscuits his wife bakes. Mmm-mmm.

    Note to Brice: I was just at the grocery store. There was a mound of Panettone right beside the fresh fruit :-)

    It is really simple, peasant food that became the national staple. But from my experience, that is usually the best!

    Great thread!

    I think growing up in another country really refined my pallete and made me gastronomically adventurous.

    I have never live in Thailand or India but lately, I would do unspeakable things for a good curry. :-) I love the complexity of the flavors and spices.

    For comfort food there is NOTHING like a bowl of feijao e arroz--or beans and rice. But NOT like cuban--close, but not the same. The rice has to have lots of garlic, onions, and olive oil (I can remember my entire apartment building smelling of those smells around 6pm when people were making dinner). And the beans need to have cooked all day and simmered with cumin, garlic, and maybe a little piece of dried pork. Ahhh...a bowl of that and everything else disappears . :-) I probably make beans and rice at least once a week and thankfully my wife and boys have learned to love it also.

    PS. Oh...and Japanese food--I could eat sushi everyday. I don't know though (help?) if true Japanese food is like what you get at Sushi/Japanese restaurants here in the states.

    My god, the Vietnamese sandwich baguettes rock my world!?

    Pretty much anywhere Muslims, the French or Italians have left there mark the food is incredible...
  • Okay...

    First of all, I cook Arabic (mainly Palestinian/Syrian/Lebanese) dishes very well. Exempt soups. I cannot get the soups down well.

    I also cook some southern thai dishes well. My tofu, tomato, ginger soup is amazing and my cucumber relish that accompanies the satay chicken is the best you will ever have - I guarantee it!

    I also cook Italian soups very well.

    I loooooooooooooooooove...

    1). Grilled or stewed octopus. From anywhere.
    2). Lebanese food.
    3). Any authentic Chinese food.
    4). Japanese soups.
    5). Ethiopian food.
    6). Jamaican food.
    7). Cajun food (gumbo, po'boys, beignets - all of it!).
    8). El Salvadorean food.
    9). I love that Brasilian restaurants ALWAYS have something passionfruit flavored to offer like a shake or mousse (but NEVER ice-cream! I can only, if barely, find said ice-cream in the odd Japanese ice-cream spot in Australia).
    10). Taoist chinese food.
    11). Southern Thai food.
    12). Indian food.
    13). Some Nepalese food is cool. The curries are dry, but the entries are great.
    14). Italian food regardless of region.
    15). Greek food (though it get's too heavy sometimes).
    16). Coastal Croatian cooking (very seafood heavy).
    17). Turkish food! OMG...turkish pizza is the BOMB!?
    18). Belgian chocolate.
    19). Papayas from Hawaii.
    20). Canada has the most luscious stone food and berries I have ever had the pleasure of tasting.

    Favorite breakfast; The Thailand morning market nasi krabu (sp?), or Malaysian roti with curry (Shal's curry house in tanah rata Malaysia is amazing!)
    Favorite main course; for simplicity, plain rice and fresh crispy south east asia ocean fish. However, New Zealand lamb with Coleman's mint sauce and roast potatoes is sooo good!
    Favorite dessert; Sticky rice (thai jasmine) with mango and sweetened condensed milk (nestle).
    But i also love
    eel (raw/sushi), durian, yakiniku (sp?), iranian shish kabob, baklava, manooshi (w/ zatar), kibbi, tom yum, (really)Dutch pea soup, haagelslaag... and much more!
  • Hard to say! I love Japanese food, Malaysian and Portugese the most!
    Out of Japanese: Tempura Udon, out of Portugese, it'd have to be the lemon butter on sea food *dreams* and with Malaysian...I can't choose!

  • Of all the Korean food i like, i miss soo jae bee the most! (with ssook in it. *ssook=type of green plant but not the green thing in the picture!)

    Oh God, I cannot even begin to list all the food that I love!!! I live to eat and...well...forget it, I won't even try to choose which one I love best.

    Here's some of my favorites:

    - Döner Kebab
    - Simple Chinese dimsum
    - Pad Thai
    - Tom Yam Soup
    - Daal Makhni (spelling?)
    - Murgh Makhni
    - Foie gras (hhhmmmm...)
    - Pain au chocolat (known as petit pain in northern France)
    - Northern French french fries
    - Carbonade Flamande
    - Couscous
    - Adobo!!!
    - Sinigang
    - Lumpia Shanghai (Filipino-chinese spring rolls!!)
    - Kassler
    - Knacker
    - Currywurst!!!

    and the list goes on...and on...and on...

    Mauritian dholl pourri (or whichever way you want to spell it), gato piment, and you just can't beat freshly cut coconut. I mean, seriously!

    And good fresh bread.With nice soft cheeses and some figs or apples. SO GOOD!

    Also, can anyone go past authentic Italian gelato?

    Ok, I'm starving! And I just woke up, too.

    Turkish lamb shaved off a spit, with soft, pillowy pita bread

    Wiener Schnitzel with a spray of lemon, cucumber salad and "Pommes"

    Pakistani Dal and Chapati (spicy, to make lips tingle and nose run)

    Chinese Cashew Chicken, spicy

    Those are just some of my very, very favorites that come to mind.

    You know, my mom makes terrific Vietnamese food. And unlike many Vietnamese, she likes to try all the different cuisines from different parts of the country.

    And you know, personally, I think a lot of it is so good, fresh and healthy that it should be seen up there with sushi as a fashionable, healthy food.

    It just needs to be done. A lot of the time people think Vietnamese and can only imagine Pho. There's a LOT more. And it's bloody good, and not fattening.

    I feel I should add to this list, a few that haven't been mentioned, i think.

    Filipino food (coz I am, and it's what I eat most at home)--esp. Adobo and Kare-Kare

    Roti with peanut sauce
    Mee Goreng (I'm craving this combo at the moment!)

    And Ayako, cheers for the NZ fish and chips special mention.

    I LOVE GARLIC! I don't know what to do if they took away garlic! I put garlic in everything..when I can LOL I even love the lingering smell on my fingers after I have handled it...haha! Call me crazy XD

    Ethiopian food first and foremost! (Because I can't eat anything else whenever I have a craving for a good spicy raw kitfo or beg alicha). Next comes Italian and Mediterranean food. I like Chinese food but only in a small number of restaurants.

    And Brice, I agree, Panettone is one of the best cakes ever made -- although I have a preference for Pandoro.-:)

  • Ok, so I like food:

    1. Japanese food of all kinds, especially Sushi, Katsu Don, Udon, etc.
    2. Japanese versions of other ethnic foods, especially Chinese, and Curry (they have their own twist on this)
    3. Vietnamese foods, especially Pho and Chia Gio
    4. Thai -- the spicier the better. Deep fried fish with various sauces.
    5. Authentic Chinese
    6. Indian. Lamb Vindaloo, daal, naan. Especially garlic Naan (or is that a westernization?)
    7. Cheeseburgers and Pizza
    8. Italian -- pasta and main courses
    9. Tapas. Gambas Ajillos. Marinated sardines.
    10. Mexican.
    11. A good Nasi Goreng
    12. Turkish
    13. Ad infinitum...
    (I cook a lot of these too)
  • Oh, something I forgot to add - in Europe, what happened to the spicyness of Tandoori chicken?!? I've tried it several times in the UK and it never has any kick to it!
  • Ayako's list sounds like the perfect all-you-can-eat buffet to me!

    My favorite type of food has got to be Thai (chicken in pandan leaves, green curry, that shrimp soup (I don't know it's 'official' name), etc.), although I also enjoyed food from other places I lived - Peking duck, pretty much anything made in a wok (I also remember going to a restaurant in China, I forget where exactly) and eating a soup where you were given bread which you had to break into small pieces. The soup was then made with the bread you had broken apart), Indian food (e.g. tandoori chicken, dahl, currys, etc.). Nepalese food is also very good - it's kind of a cross between Indian and Chinese food (although closer to Indian, presumably since the Himalayas form a slight cultural/culinary impediment to Chinese influence).

    I also like pasta and I absolutely love rice. One thing that kind of annoys me about Europe is the way they cook rice. They boil it in large amounts of water and then have to drain it once it's cooked, instead of putting in the correct amount of water so that when it's cooked all of the water has boiled away. I tried 'converting' a couple of housemates last year to my/the Asian method of cooking rice but they claimed it was 'too hard'. I don't see what's hard about it, but whatever... I also have a Chinese rice cooker and the first time my housemates saw it they laughed and made fun of me, but that died down pretty quickly when they saw the rice that came out of it...

    I love Indian food too, but there are so many other dishes I love I wouldn't necessarily say it was No. 1!

    This is one of the things that makes me glad I'm a TCK. We have had the chance to sample food from all over the world, often on location.

    But let me list some things I do love:

    * Any kind of pasta almost.
    * Peking duck
    * Dim Sum
    * Thai green curry
    * Tom yum soup
    * chicken cashew nuts
    * vegetable tempura
    * duck noodles (udon)
    * jamon iberico
    * macarons from Gerard Mulot
    * croissants
    * beignets
    * fish & chips from New Zealand the rest need not apply
    * babyback ribs
    * chili con carne
    * taquitos
    * korean barbecue
    * risotto a la milanese
    * fabada
    * tandoori chicken
    * dahl
    * nan
    * lamb roasted Turkish style
    * sliced red bellpeppers roasted in the oven flavored with fresh thyme, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil <---I don't know what kind of cuisine this is but I love it
    * etc....I could go on forever lol

    You know, people here complain that the veggies in our cafeteria are always cooked with garlic.

    I don't see what's wrong with that, haha! Garlic adds to any meal. :D

    I love Jordaian food. However anything Mediterranean comes close. My favorite is stuffed grape leaves, but I don't really like the Greek version. I also love Shwarmas and if you are ever in Amman, Jordan you need to go to second circle on the corner that leads to thrid circle and get one from there they are absolutly the best ever.

    First on my best list is Turkish food,doner,shich kebap,fresh fish,veggies and pita bread,yogurt cucumber dip is fabulous on everything.I also like Indian,Greek,Italian,French and Thai.When I cook,it is usually Italian or Mexican. I like anything fresh and made from scratch.

    I absolutely love tandoori chicken. Although if you guys are interested, Mauritian food is amazing. It's a blend of Indian, French, Chinese and African, it's like perfect TCK food =P

    Actually I don't have a particular favorite. I might have a favorite dish out of the different cultural cuisines I've tried though. I like anything that tastes, smells and looks different from what I usually eat. As long as it doesn't give me stomach ache/diarrhea (but even if it does I'd still eat it the 2nd time LOL). Guess that didn't answer your question huh? LOL

    Indian food is great. Personally, I love Mediterranean food, and Italian is delicious.

    I also love Lebanese and Ethiopian food, falafel and moulawas for me!
