    Valentine's Day - what's that??
  • Keenan
My Fiance and I are both working all day. Such is the life of a restaurant employee. I will watch other happy couples celebrate

Anyone raising kid(s) in the U.S. (land of the free . . . to be in denial)?
I would ignore the holiday if I did not see an obligation to help my
daughter not feel completely left out of the exchange (mostly at school).
When she is older I hope I find a way to gently disabuse her of the whole
    Disney, romantic-couple-alone-against-the-world ever-after delusion.

I'm single and do not like the commercialising of love. Yet, I decided to invite people for brunch on that day. I call it Valentina's brunch. As it is my way of taking the attention of single and couple-minded thinking.

I will be celebrating Chinese New Year in Malaysia!

I'll be mailing something to my fiancee in Berlin and calling him via Skype... LD relationship for now........ but he's a TCK, too, so we're used to this. ;-)
Oh, and my friend is hosting a Singles Awareness Day like he does every year to celebrate the hallmark holiday.

I just moved to Chattanooga, TN from Augusta, GA (4 hours drive away) and my new apartment feels really quiet and empty after living with my family for the past 1.5 years. I'm excited because a friend from Augusta is coming to visit me this weekend, which just happens to be V-day. I'm not a big V-day fan, so I don't know what we'll do, but it will be nice to not be by myself. I plan to go Ikea shopping in Atlanta on the 13th!

I'm 9 months pregnant, and had hoped to give birth by V-Day. Seems unlikely since am not due til end of the month but keeping my fingers crossed! As Laura (USA.Finn) mentioned, in Finland we literally call it Friends's Day, so I doubt me and my partner will go all out romance. Probably we'll just have some good food :D
  • Basically just arrived in a new city (Sydney) so I guess this V-day will be spent at some yummy yum-cha as it's on the same day as the Chinese New Year! (good call Tiger Year!)
Or maybe I will try some of the Tet celebration to get closer to my father's heritage...

Definitely it is not really easy being single and feeling a bit alone as you arrive in a new place with all that "LET'S CELEBRATE LOVE" thrown in your face, but it is still better than going through all the emotional turmoil of a break-up and having to face V-day, so my position is not too bad :-)
  • amyarabiya
Best wishes as you adjust to a new place. I hear ya! I'm in the same boat. I'm hoping to make some good connections here soon.

I am a young 68 and wish I had a partner - but I am married to my work! My work would have to become 'the other woman' - and my partner would have to love my work as much as she would be sure to expect me to love and support her lifestyle. I ain't dead yet. Maybe.

    Have a good Valentine's day

Do you know a beautiful rich lady who ... well, probably not!.

Like your video - though it came in fits and starts with very long gaps!
  • Haha Leigh, actually I do know one but she's taken already lol =) I'll let you know if someone else comes to mind. :)

My family and I are putting on a Valentines barn-dance. It's mostly a fundraiser for the school we all go to but it's for the whole community and so far it sounds like a lot of people are showing up [: Even though we've only been back for a couple of years it's been so cool to see how we can reach the community around us!
  • I lead a youth group of TCKs in Moscow and we're making Italian food and watching a movie :-)

Lunar New Year/Tet falls on Valentine's Day this year so I will be more focused on continuing the Vietnamese traditions with my children & husband. But normally, my husband & I do not care for vday. It's a made up holiday for restaurants in our humble opinions. hahahaa We typically stay at home & he cooks for me. We try to go out alone whenever we can get his parents to watch the kids (which is not often) but when we do get to be alone we just make the best out of it.

Happy Tet & Valentine's day to you, Brice & all my TCK sisters & brothers!
  • kiarafaithrockefeller
Tet? What's that? =D Never heard of it!!~~
  • Chris
Tet was made famous in North America during the Vietnam war for the "Tet offensive" that was launched during what was usually a peaceful and celebratory holiday.
  • Laura (USAFinn)
I am happily single and am going to an Anti-Valentine's day party! (I don't like Valentine's Day...) I like how Finland does it: ystävänpäivä, which is "friend's day." MUCH better than that lovey-dovey stuff!! :)
  • I'm currently single, but since this year's Valentine's Day also coincide with Chinese New Year, I won't have to worry about making any plans since I will be spending practically the whole day with my family and relatives. While some people may see this as an "obstacle" to their romantic plans (most of my friends have to be with their families for CNY too), I see this as a opportunity to remind myself the importance of family love, and that no matter what happens, they will always be there for you.
  • amyarabiya
True. As a TCK, I feel like family is the only constant in my life (apart from God), and so family has always been important for me. Enjoy the family time! And Happy Chinese New Year! My parents have been spending a lot of time with Chinese in Augusta (researchers at the medical college), so they'll probably be celebrating the New Year somehow as well.

=/ I'm single... I don't mind it. It's just not time yet and I'm seriously dating myself. (Getting to know myself and like myself and accept myself and love myself) I haven't done so for two decades... since I didn't know about this TCK thing until last yr... so I also thought I was genetically? weird and not bc of my super special upbringing... blah blah blah... so I hated myself (with or without knowing it) for almost two decades... so I should start first spending some quality time with myself first!!! It's just as any other days........ Last Christmas I bought myself sth, but maybe not this holiday. Saving some money here =D!!~
  • I love that idea! Dating yourself sounds like fun and affordable lol :)
  • Amanda
Yeah, I totally did that for a while, ages 24-28!!! ha ha... seriously though, I got lucky and about year and a half ago found my fiancee. Guess what, like no surprise at all, he was a post-doc at my current institution (I'm a PhD student) and he's ALSO a TCK. The only unfortunate part is now -- like many of us -- in a long distance relationship since he got a sweet prof job in Berlin and I'm still in sunny Santa Cruz, CA.

Anyways, the best part about dating myself was finding out how to make it through the lonely times (including a year in DC, a year in Santa Cruz, a year in Taiwan, and a year in Switzerland/Santa Cruz) and in the end discover the person I've become, the interests and hobbies I have, the research I'm doing for my PhD. My future husband has hopped around too, and we're OK hopping around together after I'm done with my PhD since we're both TCKs ;P

Yeah.... I got lucky! I'm crossing my fingers for you! :D
  • Sue
I am probably going to be busy with work unfortunately! It would be nice to meet someone...
