Lest we forget:

The Massacre of Withdrawing Soldiers on "The Highway of Death"
by Joyce Chediac

I want to give testimony on what are called the "highways of death." These are the two Kuwaiti roadways, littered with remains of 2,000 mangled Iraqi military vehicles, and the charred and dismembered bodies of tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers, who were withdrawing from Kuwait on February 26th and 27th 1991 in compliance with UN resolutions. U.S. planes trapped the long convoys by disabling vehicles in the front, and at the rear, and then pounded the resulting traffic jams for hours. "It was like shooting fish in a barrel," said one U.S. pilot. The horror is still there to see.

You can read more here:

Sure, as soon as we get rid of Bu... er, the past. ;)
• At the convention speech President Obama referred to his grandmother, mother, and grandfather as his celebrities.

At the end he also said, "America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for, not with the economy to fix, and cities to rebuild, and farms to save, not with so many families to protect..We cannot walk alone at this moment in this election. We must pledge once more to march into the future."
• YAY FOR OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama's grandma passed away.... :(

His voice thick with grief, the 47-year-old Illinois senator thanked McCain for an "incredibly gracious" statement of condolence, and said this was a "bitter-sweet time for me."

"She is going home," he said. "So there is great joy as well as tears."

I love this quote from Mother Teresa:

Loving Imperfection
"People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People who really want help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway. Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway."

Does it ever make any one aside from me extremely happy to be getting on a 14 hour plane ride?? I'm not talking about the "going somewhere" or even the "leaving somewhere i don't want to be anymore"...but just the being able to sit in a "room" and do NOTHING and not talk to ANYONE if i so choose for an extended period of time....I think I'm more excited for the plane ride than the actual trip ;)

I have tried to unsubscribe from their list about 6 times, but still they constantly email me. I wonder if this could be construded as spamming if it is now unwanted email that the company refuse to stop sending me.

• ive been away but to several comments up by the nomad - ice tead has got nothing on a real cup of tea :P

i have to drill some holes in my walls one of these days.. but i dont know what type of walls they are... so im worried about making large chunks fall out... knowing me the whole building will just fall down... :D

i'm feeling very off-topicy today...
• the nomad
eh... I only know that my grandmother saved my life and that I was around 4 years old... Knowing her, she probably saved my from something caused by her own neglect.

I can actually accuratly describe the other events though

1. Viral disease that ended up permanently weakening my heart muscle; it didn't help that I was treated for the wrong disease until I was practically dead. I remember how even sitting up hurt and how I had to get four stupid injections a day... Dying would have been a relief. It was before I started first grade; I learned to read in the hospital too I think.

2. Once I was on the bus (Russia) and the truck a bit in front of bus exploded... Some kids put explosives on the road just for fun... There was a family in the truck; they died. Imnot sure if this really counts as a near miss though.

... And then there is a bunch of suicide attempts but I don't like to count them.
• Brice
woa, what happened, nomad?

and no, that's not weird at all. I intend to live forever, so far so good
• the nomad
eh... Time does pass fast... I feel so old...
Is it weird that I hate aging but don't mind death?
its probably because I had a few near-misses though...
One of which I cannot even remember =/
• Brice
lol, can you believe it's already monday? that was fast XO
• Cynthia
WOOOOHOOOO WEEEKEEEEENNNDDDD

Omg I have been waiting for THIS day...
• the nomad
haha oh I love tea... unless you're talking about iced tea? lol I actually had 10 minute long conversations on the topic myself
• I once related to someone by discussing tea.... the conversation lasted over 20 minutes....
ya gotta love tea :P
• the nomad
oh I can relate to them on any level except when it comes to my identity.. Or at least try to. I can become friends with people i have nothing in common easily too. Whenever I meet someone I just start a random topic about somthing they can probably relate to. I ask them questions and avoid THE topic until I want to. My accent gives me away usually though.

Brice, you're mean... Keeping people hanging is eeevll :P
• Brice
I can't share too many details yet, because I want to make sure I can do it again... it's the first time I've done something that incredible, so I'm still experimenting with it. I'm going out tomorrow, and I can't wait to try it again! @-@

But here's a hint... it's mind blowing concept that requires you to get out of your comfort zone because it's so hard to do at first. And yet, it's so simple once you understand it.

But I'm really impressed at how WELL it worked in such a short period of time... we made an incredible connection in just 2 minutes. I wonder what would've happened if I had more time?

Sorry to be so cryptic, but I'll try to do this again to test it and see if I can get more results.

But while I'm here, let me ask you... what have you done to relate with monocultural people?
• the nomad
...how? Inventions shouldnt be kept secret :P ... or society will never progress
• Brice
Wow, I had an awesome day and did something scary but incredible... I made 12 monocultural people relate to my weird TCK background and made an instant connection with them in under 2 minutes, without using any spells or magic tricks! I'm gonna try to do it AGAIN tomorrow... I feel as if I discovered a secret lol, this is scary because I had to get out of my comfort zone, but it feels really amazing
• Brice
TODAY IS CANADA DAY! HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL OF YOU! :D

• Isa

On another note: i am packing to go on a day-long train ride tomorrow! whoo! I get to go back to Sydney and see my golden retriever! Yay! (And my dad and friends, but its really Furball which counts! haha).
• Cynthia
I remember someone very seriously told me that he had 7 pieces of hair...I never thought of counting it...

He's still around doing 7-up stuff :p
• Uncle Dan
I remember him too. I did also wonder what happened to him.

Fresh coconuts they cut the top off of, and give you a straw and spoon!

I love tropical countries.
• anayawa
Ohh, I remember Fido Dido. Wonder what happened to him.

Its exam time and I should be studying. I don't know why but I can't help but think about 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?'
Carmen is kinda like a "fugitive" TCK, right??? OK maybe Global Nomad...

Well, you could still reincarnate into one..just that that life in particular would be short...if you believe in reincarnation anyways then you'll be reincarnated again...
I'd just be afraid to be one of those pieces of pizza that gets stuck for months under some gross teenagers couch and is only found when mold is growing on it...that wouldn't be fun.

Guava is greeaaatttt...there's a lot of fresh guava here...it's great for...."digestive problems"...that's the first thing I was told here "if you ever get tourista...eat some goyave!"

I can't eat pizza anymore :(

I LOVED Geneva!
• Marie

by the way cattt why three ttts? just wondering :)

Thankfully I can report that i'm not hungry anymore...although lunch was much more expensive than prévu...(english word plz?)
• haha i miss zurich. i used to live in a town just off of winterthur. then i moved to a place which was a 10 minute walk from Glatt... i miss Glatt... I loved shopping there...
• Uncle Dan
The other day my mother told me roughly how to get to the cheapest drycleaning store she's found. At 7 francs a piece, that's really good for Switzerland and worth travelling to the next town for!

The thing is, my mother isn't very good with directions. So I ended up taking the train instead of the bus to Hinwil, the next town over. It was pretty drab, as Swiss towns go. More factory than place to live. I walked around to find the nearest supermarket and they told me that it wasn't there... but tried to give me rough directions to where they thought it was, which was a bus trip in the direction of Wetzikon.

I got off that bus 2-3 times in the wrong place, with a lot of walking in the hot sun with 2 jackets and 3 pants in a bag on my back, feeling like I was travelling around half of eastern Zurich looking for this place. It was a pleasant day, though, blue skies on the hills and forests, with a decent breeze.

After finally finding the place, I poke around for a while, and find that the nearest bus goes back to Hinwil... but I figure that's alright, it'll turn around there and go back to Wetzikon, where my parents live.

It stops at the Hinwil train station, changes its bus number... and proceeds up the mountain.

Ohhh, it turned around at the end of the line up there and so I rode the same bus all the way back, but it was absolutely beautiful! Well worth the detour, in my mind. Farms, forests, cows with bells, and horses. Those cute Swiss houses which are like modern chalets. Restaurants with a rustic look to them, and hand painted signs and designs.

And only old people and kids. All the young adults go to the big city, haha.
• Does anyone else get migraines from the weather? I have this killer headache right now, since yesterday morning from this stupid storm that just REFUSES to break!
It's really weird, when I have a headache my neck cracks... its very disconcerting when i move my head and i hear 'crack!'

I love food.. but I don't have an oven so I cant bake cakes or make cool stuff like lasange or other things...
Or pizza!!!! who DOESNT love pizza? I could eat that stuff night and DAY

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g51/vanvittig...

best frozen pizza EVER!

Hm... what is your favorite food?

THIS IS GREAT!!!! (Although it took me 10 minutes to view 15 seconds of the clip :)).

So, as this is the official off topic thread I feel it is necessary to let everyone know that I'M HUNGRY and it's not lunchtime yet :(.
• Brice
OMG Marie, I LOVED Baraka. It was one of my favorite movies (well, it's not really a movie since it has no plot...). But it has one of the most amazing and stunning visuals ever.

Watching this film makes you feel like you're crossing time and space.

My friend also hated it haha

BTW, my friend Paulette just sent me this Music video featuring Barack Obama showing his dance moves. A must watch.

• Marie
soooooooooo anyone seen the film "baraka".... dunno why I just thought of it...i realllllyyyy loved it but my friend reaalllyyy hated it...I think it's a love-hate type thing...you can't just "like" it or "appreciate" it or whatever...anyways i just found out theres a "sequal" (?) called samsara...I think...i wanna see that...too bad I have NO acces to popular films, books, movies etc.

Oh, i've also been reading A LOT about south african and the truth and reconciliation commission...of course there have been realllllyyyyyyy diverse views so now that i'm pretty much done reading them I have no idea what to think...buuuttttt SOUTH AFRICA IN TWO WEEKS! swweeeettttt :)

this is my contribution to the procrastination thread... it just turned 16:31.

Ni hao, woah she marie :) that's all I know of mandarin by the way...oh

wuah (spelled wrong, even phonetically but w/e)
ni (I think...again spelled wrong..even phonetically)
ta (I think that's pretty phonetically on point..but yeah...I nead to realllyyy start cracking on the whole learning mandarin thing).
• Brice

"...but he just doesn't seem to understand the fact that I do not feel as attached to him as he is to me."

Don't worry. This is not a TCK thing at all. I've heard both TCKs and non-TCKs gripe about this and we're talking about people of all ages!

Usually in any relationship, one party is more keen than the other.

Have you ever seen couples where the guy did everything the girl asked and wondered why? Or seen girls who were used like doormats by guys and wondered why they got away with it? It's probably because the one who was being 'too nice' liked the other party more.

Loving each other equally is kind of like a Hollywood myth. Often when someone is all excited that they have found this mythological match - it's not exactly what it seems like and the other party is just working very hard to make it seem so...

Imagine we all have meters inside our heads where we rate each person on how much we like them. It's unlikely that two people will have the exactly same ratings of each other down to the 0.000000000001 digit. But if the numerals are pretty close you can think about having a relationship!

And if you do find a real match like this - it really is something to get excited about I guess - because it is rare.

If you've never had very close relationships, it's probably better for you to have 'the upper hand' where he likes you more than you do. This way you can call the cards. I mean don't be nasty and unreasonable but you certainly wouldn't do anything you don't want to in such a relationship would you? :)

If you so feel inclined, you might give it a trial period after discussing what you are comfortable doing and what you're not?

By the way, in my past experiences, the relationships with guys where I was less keen than the guy always had happier endings. The ones where I was more keen were always disasters!

Anyway good luck and hope you solve your problem!
• lauren
does anyone find it hard to give into a relationship?

I am on the brink of one, but I can't seem to let myself get attached enough to actually want the relationship to work out really well. I tried to explain this to the guy, but he just doesn't seem to understand the fact that I do not feel as attached to him as he is to me. He even thought I was pushing him away... maybe I was. But I was doing this probably because he seemed so much more into me than I him. Is this a TCK thing or what?

I just don't really ever like someone allot until I know them as a person first. I want to have them as a friend first, but then when I finally feel like I know him enough to risk more than friendship, the guy already thinks it's too late and we are no more than friends. mmmm....why dont I just let him get close..
• Isa
I'm meant to be either writing a paragraph on what annoys me, fixing up a paragraph to make it all prettyful and submittable for tomorrow or working on an extremely difficult translation passage for my French translation course. Argh!
• Constanza
soooo...i'm supposed to be writing an essay on the book "Nicke and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich.....but i don't want to, so i'm procastinating...lol

• Cynthia
This place is jampacked with everything a TCK needs :) Only gone for a week and already we're up by like many many many many people (c'mon you don't expect me to do math do you? :p).

And oooh guess what? I can get into icanhascheezburger.com without proxifying but I think due to wordpress.com hosting the images I can't see the pictures :( So I still have to proxify it...*sigh*

So... just got my research paper back that I was working on last semester (about how Spanish will someday unofficially become an official american language) and one of my prof's comments was:
"Interestingly, at times your grammar, though not wrong, feels foreign. I'm guessing elements of French grammar leaking over into your English! :-)"
I'm proud of that!! before coming to college (2.5 years ago now... so long ago!) I had never written a paper in english, only in french, and I had written lots in my 11 years in the french school system. I'm glad to hear that I still have some of that left in me!
• andi
I'm amazed by the activity around here:)

I was away from the internet for two weeks.
• mairabay
hey guys, I've been a bit absent on this site (and I think I've probably lost my position of outstanding newcomer to Alastair :S), but I promise I WILL read all the posts (I have like 7 pages or so to catch up).
As much as I love you guys and love this site, sometimes I just have to sit and deal with my own issues by myself (I promise I'll write a post on this so you can know what it's all about).

ok, two promises...that's enough! :D I better get started on reading those posts!
• Cynthia
Hi Vanessa! Welcome to TCKid.com! You should write an intro for yourself so that we can give you a formal welcome with a LOLcat XD

Nice to meet you! :D
• Hello,
I'm in the tck group on facebook and i decided to join up after reading a post that someone was feeling depressed. I think its really cool how this is a little community where people are so open and understand the things you go through!

I just signed up and i thought id start up by reading what not to say just in case but i was fooled! lol.. Oh and I really like the cat theme too! :)
• Cynthia
I have like 6 pages of comments to catch up on o.o

Btw, welcome back Julie :D I was wondering where you disappeared to XD
• Julie
Well I'm back! I have been gone all week. Or didn't you notice. Probably not. I was in Saskachwan for the week and had not internet access. sigh poor me. anyway I am back now and desperately trying to catch up to everything. Sorry everyone but I will not be replying to every post only the ones still on the most recent list I think. maybe eventually i will have time to look back but not now.
• Shan
Yeah I love onebag too, I use it all the time!
• djiboutigirl
It was really interesting actually to see how my life could have been if I had stayed in one place. I felt like I "fit in" with these people who i'd never met before. They weren't exactly very open/inclusive, so I was wondering if maybe I felt like i fit in because they didn't make an effort to include me. Does that make any sense?
i'll try to rephrase: not fitting in is so normal to me (and TCKs in general?) that by not fitting in with this tight-knit group of people, I actually did feel like I fit in. Ok, that really makes no sense at all, but it is how i felt.
They also took me skiing! (I'd never even sledded before). that was a lot of fun, and very painful today, and yesterday, and probably tomorrow... haha
• Brice
Oi.. my internet didn't work all day. :( I wonder what I missed in the chatroom. lol

"I'm gonna go to my roomate's house (in a small town where everyone's known each other since they day they were born) "

Sometimes I wonder what my life would've been if I stayed in one place?

I doubt I'd be open-minded and be able to relate to so many of you!
• Brice
I'll be your age in 2 years! Mwuhahah... I'm catching up to you, watch out.

Actually in cat years, I'm really old....
• djiboutigirl
I'm gonna go to my roomate's house (in a small town where everyone's known each other since they day they were born) and hang out for a day or two before moving on again...
Last new year's eve seems so not far away... i remember I was preparing to go to Spain for the semester. On the 30th, I was making gel-wax candles with my cousins, and burnt my hand, and discovered that I am indeed allergic to percocet, and that WAS what had made me throw up when i got my wisdom teeth out, because it made me sick again on the 31rst. So I went to bed at 8PM, after being sick all evening :-D what a great way to bring in 2007... this year made up for it though. I hope next year is as wonderful for everyone!
• Cynthia
HAHAHAHA! Sorry I find that cute and hilarious at the same time :D
• Cynthia
Will go with a group of friends to do the countdown at the Oriental Pearl Tower :) That's the first time that's happening in Shanghai so it's going to be exciting I would think. It will be the first time I'm back at the Pearl in like...8 years?

Man, time flies!! I'm already a quarter century old yo!
• Brice
I can't believe it's 2008 in 2 days... does anyone have plans?

Nothing special here except watching a movie with my gf and eat lots of food of course :D

You called someone UNCLE DAN? HAHAHAHAHAHH! LMAO!

Someone please PM Dan and show him this thread haha

Oh man, I loled so much
• Isa
Aisyah: Yes, i DO mean gaol instead of 'goal'... i tend to get eaten by the typo demon on occasion.. sorry!

My English gets whacked too, i tend to write 'danse' instead of 'dance' and 'tjrs' (toujours) instead of 'always' in lectures.
• Cynthia
Oh one funny thing happened during a convo I had with me and my boyfriend.

So Nathan has a friend called Dan and to not confuse him with another friend of his also called Dan, people gave him the nickname Dr. Dan (because he's a resident doctor). Well I personally know a lot of Dan myself so when I was talking to him about Dr. Dan, I accidently called him Uncle Dan XD Nathan was like "Uncle Dan?" HAHAHAHAHA!!

I think I need to stay away from Uncle Dan o.o
• Cynthia
Panda iz back in da 'Hai!
• Aisyah
First came across "Reading Is Sexy" on Gilmore Girls, the only TV show I've followed. Went hunting for it online after that, haha.
At some point I'll get around to writing my intro. Must be off now.
• Aisyah
Brice, I first came across "Reading Is Sexy" on Gilmore Girls, the only TV series I've ever followed. Then I went hunting for it online, haha.

• Brice
Aisyah, your avatar makes me want to read... I love it, where did you find this picture? haha

Btw, do you have an intro? I have to give you a lolcat :D
• Aisyah
Did you mean to write GAOL instead of GOAL?
Michelle, be careful not to get them mixed up in the exams!
• Brice
LOL Isa, would it make sense to say "my goal in life is to end up in a goal"?

If you want to ski, you should go to Quebec!! I went to Mont Tremblant many years ago and it was awesome.
• Isa
With regards to the goal/jail thing: Aussie's DO use the term 'jail'. It also means the same thing.
The word 'goal' is used more when referenceing the convicts 'Oh, yeah, he was in goal wasn't he?'
'Jail' is a modern (American?) term used for modern law-beakers, not olden ones.

LOL -- when i first came here i was like WTF? So you're good or bad? Negatives confuse me... double negatives ... i just die!

Snow! I need to ski! Hey TCK people, when i travel to Canada, can you point me in the diection of good skiing places? Or Europe?
• mairabay
hey Brice,
I found that OneBag site very useful, really cool!

And is it my impression or just me and Dan like snow? I'm with you Uncle Dan!!!

here's some ranting about this:

you people complain about snow like people I know in Brazil complain about rain...God, it's just weather! I think it's because there's so many other things that make me happy/unhappy that for me weather is just that...a fact of life, comes with the country, whatever

another thing: you complain about cold! YOU GUYS HAVE HEATING! And shops where you can buy warm clothes (God bless Fleece).

You have no idea what cold weather is like in Brazil. It's 10C outside and 5C inside (yes, it gets colder inside than outside), and THERE IS NO HEATING!
Plus, there are no such things as warm technological clothes...I mean, fleece? The first time I saw it was this year in a sports shop (and obviously it costs a fortune).

I've been in fall in the Quebec and it was -8, I felt so much more comfortable there than in most winters I've spent in Brazil (it usually only goes down to 10C in winter here).

I'm telling you, you live in places where there is preparation for the cold.

In other countries there is no such thing, we just feel cold in the winter, wear coats indoors, sleep with a huge pile of blankets, wake up and it's freezing cold in your room!!

Ok, ranting over! :D

Sorry about all the ranting, I guess it's just another thing that I hate about my "home" country, the lack of preparation for cold weather.
• AlastairS
mind you not even English English is very English.....
• LOL.
but i will complain to my teacher and see what he/she says anyway.
besides, it's called ENGLISH for a reason, and not AUSTRALIAN.
• AlastairS
They can't kill you but they sure as hell can take away your A hahaha... and programME.. another tricky one... I dunno.. just play by their rules, its too difficult to argue with English teachers.. believe me I tried... "But thats how the International community spell it!" "Then its not english" "What the hell??" "Watch your language Mr.Sim" "Jesus Christ" "JESUS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS" hahahaha.. Mr.Price..
• you saw my blog?
LOL, thanks, although i think the background could do with a bit more work, haha.
actually, come to think of it, they really do do that don't they? not bad, not much, not cheap, not this, not that, LOL.
goal thing? so wait, if i spell it as JAIL, they can't kill me for it can they???
• AlastairS
hey i just checked out your blog, pretty cool, seriously talk to Aisyah cause i think you two would get along very well. Anyway on the topic of aussie slang you should look up Carl Barron. HILAROUS.. Find the one where he talks about australians telling you what they're not "How are ya mate?" "Not bad!".. "What you up to?" "Not much" "How far is it??" "Ohhh Not far!" "How much was that??" "Not cheap!" hahahaha... "It's like they're playing a game. They'll tell you what they're not.. then its up to you to work out the rest!" hahahaha...

oh and the goal thing.. my teacher marked that as wrong in TEE English... beware... haha..
• dankie for being the only one able to actually come here and post on christmas day, i was absolutely bushed at the end of it, haha.

I just remembered...I'm in Bahrain now, and I just found out a couple days ago that George Bush is going on a Middle East tour in January, including Bahrain. And I'll be here when he is. I wonder if there'll be any public appearances.
• Cynthia
Dec 26th :D So watch out for some crazy stuff after that date XD

Although I am dreading that date coz I don't wanna leave the US :(

I actually took that pic of the cat in my avy. There's a black cat that likes to linger outside our front door. My coworker likes to feed it so it likes to come at around the same time everyday to be fed LOL He's really cute :D

I just received my issue of the TCK magazine Among Worlds! WOOHOO! I'll review it and share my thoughts with everyone, because I have trouble keeping my thoughts to myself. :)
• Cynthia
...is still rocking to Linkin Park...YEA!!!
• Angelic
Warona, yeah i get that aaall the time. guys from Turkey too it seems...india...but thankfully it's not as bad as like Hi5 or myspace, or some of those.
• charm
Well I just got to my parents place lol. I am soooo tired and jetlagged, but i still don't feel like going to bed.
Angelic, yeah, I'm in Bahrain now. The government went absolutely insane with the holiday lights lol. The capital city looks like Las Vegas lol. At least I missed the huge winter storm that just hit my college town a couple of hours ago. And I met a nice range of interesting people on my flights. One was a nice Chinese telecommunications man who works in DC and travels consulting with Native American tribes helping them set up telecommunications businesses.
Warona, that's happened to me lol. Usually it's guys from Bahrain though and occasionally Saudi.
• Julie
Interesting Warona I don't think that is normal. At least on facebook you can ecnore people you don't want to talk to or see though.
• Brice
haha Warona! You got hit on Facebook? Didn't he see your status??

Man, if you keep calling children of the 80s a bunch of 12 yos, can you really blame Kristine for calling you granny?
• Isa
LOL Warona -- try 21! I'm 19 and was born in 1988.
• warona
i got hit on on facebook today. is that normal? some guy just sent me an email saying 'i never seen girl cute like you' (niiiiiiice)and added me as a friend.

i ignored him, of course but it was all so strange. he was born in like 1986, so he's like what? 12?

WTF??!!
• Angelic
Where u traveling to Charm? Bahrain? oh and btw, do u speak Arabic? perhaps i should drop by for a visit.

yes a Charity foundation sounds good! I can be responsible for putting up little glass donation boxes in all the supermarkets, malls, and corner stores...or better yet i'll just go canning with a sign "TCKids need a home" dressed as a clown so ppl notice me more. :P hehe gah!! that would be horrible!!

and perhaps we should get an island with extreme temperature changes...that way all us very different folks gets the weather we all like! :D
• charm
Well, wish me a happy 2 day journey guys. I'm meant to be waking up in 2 and a half hours and I still need to wash my hair before bed. Yeah, I don't see sleep happening. I leave for the airport at 5.30am, and I won't get to my parent's house til about 10pm Sunday night. Sounds like fun!
• Brice
Priyanka will probably like this

I googled lolcat + travel just to see what would turn up. There's really a lolcat for every moment. haha
• charm
I'm not packing a huge amount...I'm actually taking about half of all my things back with me that I have here to my parents house that I haven't used so I don't have to worry about baggage allowances at the end of the year. I packed all of that over thanksgiving and now I'm just trying to pack stuff I'll use over the break and bring back and my handluggage.
• charm
Does someone wanna come over here and pack for me? PLEASE? I absolutely loathe packing. I'm going to the airport in less than 6 hours and I am nowhere near done. This is the part of travelling I hate. The packing and getting to the airport.
• charm
We could always set up a charity or foundation lol. The Third Culture Kids foundation. "Please donate to these children and adults without nations, and help buy them a home"
• I mentioned it yesterday in the chatroom, but I don't know if I was the first.

Sadly I doubt we'll get our own island :(
Unless we can somehow convince some billionaire to donate one, or if we get enough people in the FB group then we all give 1$ and buy ourselves one.
• Brice
I just created that petition group on Facebook so we can get an island. haha

And yeah, it's getting cold here too. Grr. Another reason why TCKs need their own island.

Join the group here:

It's freezing over here. It's meant to be -10C most of this week/weekend. Plus it's been snowing all afternoon and evening.
• djiboutigirl
It's cold today... but Saturday and Sunday it's supposed to snow/ "wintry mix" (that sounds like a recipe... I've figured out it's pretty much hell frozen over). Saturday/Sunday, I'm also supposed to drive 9-13 hours :-(
• Cynthia
Guess what? We're getting 9 inches of snow tonight XD
• Brice
Charm, I hate packing too. That's why I religiously check http://onebag.com to remind myself not to overpack and other neat tips. Go check the site!

Someone should make a thread about packing ...
• Uncle Dan
How much are you packing? :)
• Uncle Dan
"for true" also seems like some American thing I'm not getting. So either the authors were more American than they thought, or they put that in as a deliberate joke.

I have no idea.
• Isa
Hey

I was just looking at the inscription line in the TCK book and the authors have thanked several people than added "and to TCKs - "for true".

What does that mean "for true"? Is it some American thing that i missed out on?

Ah, the rubber/eraser bit...

Has anyone had the "rooted" story yet? I was at a friends' party in LA when i was 14 and there was this 'jock' - some sports guy in one of those special jackets - who handed me a drink and said 'Hi' then was called away by his friends. My friend J and her friends came up to me and said "Whoa! So are you rooting him now?"
I justed looked at them strangely went "No! God, i just MET the guy! No!" They looked at each other strangely and then said "Why not, he's a really good player." (Of what sport i have no idea). Then i just cracked up laughing because i caught on to what the American version of "rooting" is.
• Brice

BRICE ET AL: Yes! Interesting stuff DID happen! Recently (well, 2 yrs ago) Taronga Zoo acquired 2 snow leopard cubs. So fast forward 2 years when my cousins and I went there -- the cubs are quite large -- perhaps 'teenagers'?. There was the leopard inclsure and a bit of rock where some people were filming )there was no signs or anything that say you cant go up ON the rock) so my cousins and i follow the other people up there. The other people leave so its just us and the leopard cub crouches and then i get distracted by the other cub when the first cub POUNCES AT ME! I yell and step back -- all i can see is this flash of blue/white with CLAWS coming at me! I forget that there is a fence in-between us of course but hey...
So he was happy just looking and coming back to me and getting up on his hindlegs and looking at me straight in the face!
MY cousin joked that the cub was in love with me... lol!
Then this guy yells at us for being cruel to the cub -- he thought we were teasing the animal... I don't know why.. it seemed happy and they don't get much stimulation...

Unfortunately, my camera didn't record the pics i took!!! I am SO angry!

LOL @ Dan 'sucking up EU funding...'
• Uncle Dan
Somehow Spain doesn't feel exotic. Possibly erotic, ;) but it doesn't seem so exotic when you live in Europe. It's just over there, sucking up EU funding. ^^
• charm
Ooh yeah, I forgot to mention. I got one of my research papers back, 1 out of the 3 I had, and I got an A :D I'm really happy about it and just hope I did as well on the other papers...
• charm
It's still snowing lol I just went out and took a bunch of pictures for my best friend in England who is currently snow-deprived lol. They're on facebook if anyone's interested lol. I think it's pretty to look at but I don't want to go out in it, and tomorrow it's going to be all disgusting and slushy instead of nice and powdery like it is now.

Brice, I'm going to the middle east on Saturday lol does that count as exotic for you? It's not for me after living there so long lol but can't wait! I get some actual warmth after being in the minuses all this week.
• Brice
ARGH! My internet didn't work almost all afternoon. I'm like Superman on kryptonite... need.. internet.. slowly... dying..

Charm, yeah it's going to snow/rain here too. ALL WEEK LONG. AHH!

Is anyone traveling to some exotic place? lol

Please take me with you!
• kristine
bah, here in fort mc, it's supposed to snow 6-10 cm. tonight. who knows what tomorrow will bring? it might as well snow up to the top of the door. then i would have a reason to stay at home LOL.
• charm
It's snowing again! :S And hard. This morning the roads were all clear and now there's a nice thick layer of snow everywhere. And it's supposed to snow all week :( I'm hoping it doesn't interfere with my flight plans on Saturday.
• charm
Isa, you just reminded me of my hilarious trip to Chester zoo last year lol, supposedly the biggest zoo in England. Loads of fun was had. We went into this one exhibit with monitor lizards and one of them was leaning against the glass with its eyes all droopy and this weird look on it's face. It looked really hungover lol.
Then we went to the bat exhibit, and they have this large enclosure where the bats actually fly around you so you have to be careful not to get hit by any lol. Anyway, there were these windows at the high end of one wall and there's a really small amount of natural light shining through. At one point a bat landed in front of the window and spread its wings wide with the light shining behind it, and my friend goes "Look! It's the Bat signal!" lol it was so funny cuz it actually did look just like the bat signal.
There were other funny animals like a huge bird with a really long neck and pinky/purple spines/hair on its head that bopped its head up and down like it was dancing lol

So how was your zoo visit? lol anything funny or interesting?
• kristine
LOL well, I just came home from school. I was gonna say work, but then I remember, that was yesterday! LOL. Today is quite annoying I must say. Hehe.
• Isa
Oh Brice -- what did she get you? Stuff from Amazon? (Sorry, i couldn't resist!).

Now i'm off to Taronga Zoo to show my cousins around the dangerous Australian wild-life. I shall tell you if any of the animals make an impression...
• Uncle Dan
I went skiing yesterday and loved it! The snow was really coming down in the afternoon though, and with thick, powder-y snow, a few falls were inevitable.

Where I usually go skiing you can see the Matterhorn on a clear day across the alps. Absolutely gorgeous.

Of course, just this morning I was on my way to my college on my leather-soled shoes on top of slushy new snow, and fells on my ass. So there are pluses and minuses.
• charm
I know what you mean lol. My mom is always complaining that I get bored of everywhere after a while. I get bored all over the world lol.
• Cynthia
I needed a change. I got tired of Shanghai after being there for a year...actually I got tired of Asia LOL I needed to go to a place where I can speak English...it's really weird~ I wish I can stay here longer but the US gov't doesn't allow me :( But even if I do stay here for a year I'd get tired of it too LOL *sigh* Life of a TCK...never stop changing lol

Oh btw, I finally got the TCK book! Still need to read it...
• charm
You're excited to be here and I can't wait to leave lol. It's too cold for me. I'm looking forward to a Middle Eastern winter lol. Except for when I get back it'll be colder than ever :S
• Cynthia
oooh fancy new commenting layout :D

I'm officially in the US now and it's cold but I love it! So much better than the cold we have in Shanghai...so much more.

And I'm lucky coz I get to be experiencing my first sleet snow in a year and it's supposedly going to go on until tomorrow morning and I'll be driving to work the first time in a year LOL woohoo!
• kristine
1: I hate snow more than I hate... country music (because I cannot ski or snowboard)
and
2: poor kitty hahaha. cracks me up though. ahh, lovely person that made the kitty do that face haahahah (i dunno if i meant that or what, all i know is that i said that lol.)
• charm
That kitty is hilarious lol although I've started feeling sorry for it and wondering how that guy got it to make that face lol.
• Angelic
hahahah....loved that scared cat pic!! awesome! my favorite one so far! btw brice, i got a few cat pics for u..if i can find out how to get them to u. lol
• Angelic
ladidadidadida.....what am i doing....hmmmm...why does everyone seem to hate snow????? what's wrong with u ppl??
• Isa
Well, i have never been fully int o the 'snow' experience. Possibly because i have never been skiing or snowboarding. I'm fairly decent at ice skating tho. ie. i don't fall down(much)!
I have always lived in warm-ish countries... and have never bothered to go skiing in them. Here, is it cheaper to go to New Zealand to ski then it is to ski in Aus.
Just once i would like to have the whole 'OMG! SNOW!" experience y'know, wake up and its snowing...
Actually, the first time i ever went to London it snowed!
• Brice
The chatroom was so fun last night, we met Cynthia's boyfriend Nate and saw Ange's clown pics!! Nate is really cool. (and he likes lolcats too haha). And Uncle Dan showed us a new hilarious Singapore podcast, lah.

And we FINALLY saw Angelic's CLOWN pictures!! Yes, Ange is a real performing clown. She posted her clown pictures on tckid, so now we know for sure that she's a real clown. She also invited her sister Marie in the chatroom and we saw her baby too. They're both half Swedish/Thai. It's cool to see another multiracial TCK.

Check Ange's clown pictures!

I'm counting down to Bahrain lol 8 days to go!

I wish I had more pictures of my cat lol. One time my dad made me laugh really hard and my cat is lying on the floor at my feet and she just leans back and gives me a hard stare. Her eyes go wide and she looks at me like I'm insane :D
• Cynthia
Congrats Charm!!! :D

And right now I am counting down to the day I am flying back to the US!! Feeling antsy...
• charm
lmao that kitty's face cracks me up XD I showed it to my best friend and it just freaks her out lol I'm gonna stop looking at that picture! I keep laughing at the people near me think I'm a complete spaz lmao
• Brice
Charm, I was just doing some Christmas shopping earlier for my lil brother - I got him some robots from thinkgeek.com hehe I love that place.

But I think robots makes kitty scared. :(

Did you know Cynthia and her bf are now making lolcats too? haha

Here's one her boyfriend did. Too funny lol

This weekend I will be buying christmas presents before I go to Bahrain for the break lol. How about you, any plans?

Oh yeah! lol The scared kitty makes me laugh almost every time lol. The look on its face cracks me up. I've already gotten funny looks from the people next to me lol.
• Brice
Congratulations Charm!!! WOOHOO haha. And tomorrow is Friday, so there's even more reason to celebrate. :D What are you doing on the weekend?

It seems I have brainwashed everyone with my lolcats lol.

DRILL CAT! Hahaha - Did you see Emo cat and American Cat? They're one of my favs.
• charm
Hey everyone, celebrate with me lol. I finally finished my last research paper and handed it in so I can finally relax now! :D
I also had to say, Brice I found this Lolcat lol. The site I found it on has me cracking up lol. There's one with a cat kicking ass lol. And the drill cat lol.
• Brice
Kristine, I knooow... I hate waiting months for the next Heroes episode. Let's rant on Hiro's blog about this like true nerds. What will I do on Mondays now?!
• kristine
ack i hated it!!! though i love what hiro did to adam. now we have to wait a few months for the nexy season and i dont like waiting!!!
• Brice
Heroes was awesome yesterday! Syler is now back...
• Brice
Hiya Sky and Maya :) What are you guys doing right now?
• Cynthia
That serious cat looks very...human o.o
• Cynthia
Oooh...fancy commenting :D

Every 15 secs???? :P
• Cynthia
I lived in Illinois...we had snow that could bury me alive LOL It wasn't fun when it was snowing but it was really pretty the next morning! The sun was out :)

So I don't really hate snow...although I do hate the icky dirty snow like Warona said.

I just don't like the cold that comes with it though....
• Uncle Dan
Testing. Testing.

One day guys, I'm going to abandon you at the Aletschgletscher, and you'll have to SKI down.
• charm
Careful what you wish for lol thats what I wanted now I want it to stop, or me to leave right now for the Middle East lol
• djiboutigirl
It snowed all day today... but there's still no snow on the ground. I want one day w/ lots of snow, then i'll be happy for the rest of the winter
• Brice
Charm: Welcome to the snow hater club!!! Finally.. now it's me, Kristine, and Charm. hehe
• Brice
I'm currently pimping the comments by adding Ajax...let's see if this works.
• charm
Okay, mind officially changed lol. I don't like snow anymore. I had fun with the sledding, but I've been freezing and wet all day from trudging through snow drifts and getting snowed on. It started snowing hard again an hour ago and now its getting even thicker :S
• kristine
LOL @ charm!! Haha, that's genius xD

"Please donate to these children and adults without nations, and help buy them a home"

We really should! Maybe some people would feel bad for us LOL then we can get our island :D
• priyanka
ew snow.
• Warona, sounds awesome, so long as we can spike the hot chocolate :D

Kristine, that's some snow! We got a good foot's worth yesterday and overnight, but now it's all melting :( and turning into ice :S

crazy optical illusion too... amazing, what the eyes do (or don't).

if it's snowing and it's dark out and you take a walk... the snowflakes tumbling down almost deserve a moment of silence--I can never get over them, kind of lying in a pile of crunchy, fall leaves, throwing water up and trying to catch it all in the summer, or watching the tulips come through the snow. plus, snow means hot chocolate and popcorn and old 50's movies. it also means olliebollen (for all the Dutch/German people out there) and icing sugar, snow and maple syrup (a decidedly Canadian thing--you haven't loved winter until you've eaten snow and maple syrup for breakfast).
• kristine
If only I can sled, make snow angels, and snowball fight without the snow. But we can't. Oh my, if only..
• Brice
By the way, who came up with the idea of creating an island for TCKs? I want to give credit where it's due. I know we talked about it in the chatroom, but it's been a while and I don't remember how this crazy idea started haha
• charm
Okay...I am on your side now sort of lol. After getting a good number of inches of snow and playing in it for the last 2 hours I have had enough winter snow fun for now lol. I'm still waiting to regain full motion in my fingers lol. In my first real snow fall, we went sledding on a piece of wood, made snow angels, had a snowball fight, and the others made a British flag in the snow, the patriotic people that they are lol.
• Cynthia
Wow that optical illusion thing made me dizzy...
• kristine
LOL yeah Brice is right! The forum didn't wanna show my pic. It's probably THAT evil.
• Brice
omg... I can't believe Warona also likes snow, don't you live in Montreal??

What is wrong with you people :P

Don't you see just how evil it is? It's so evil Kristine's picture didn't show up at first, even the forum recognizes its evil...
• kristine
LOL finallt! it posted xD
• kristine
okay ill try this and if it doesnt work, ill ask brice to post it so us snow haters (or dislikers) can show you the evils of snow lol
• kristine
gahhh i still cant post the pic. lol.
• kristine

• kristine
Ah, Brice, I hate snow too. And for the people who wanna know what snow's like here in Fort McMurray Alberta Canada (btw, that's my bro standing infront of our house):
• warona
i like snow. i like that pretty white poweder. what i hate is dirty snow. that grey horribleness piled on the side of the road that turns into huge filthy ice cubes and just sits there til the sun is hot enough to melt it. why do we never see THAT int he movies??!!

kayla! OMYDAMN! girl, times sound pretty tough for you man.i haven't been through half that stuff, but i just spent the last 2 years away form my boyfriend, he was here, i was on botswana. it SUCKED! so i can feel you on that. also for christmas, my bf is probably not going to be here and i don't know many people here and i kind of just want to stay in and watch tv or something. i just don't feel like dealing. of course everyone is all "but its christmas! you have to be with someone!!" but what with my background i have spent quite a few christmases alone and sometimes its not so bad.

if u were in montreal, i'd come over with some cookies and we could be antisocial together!
• charm
Unfortunately for you Brice, yes lol. In fact we just went into winter storm warning for the next two days so you really don't wanna come here lol. It's supposed to snow all week as well, but it will definitely snow tonight and all of tomorrow, pretty heavily I am told by the weather people. We're expecting a pretty nasty storm of snow, sleet, and possibly freezing rain.
And that thing freaks me out lol it's like it's moving, but it's not.
• Brice
Dan, you will make the snow go away... look into this optical illusion ... you are using your godly powers to destroy snow in Vancouver .. keep looking @_@

Actually this is one of the coolest optical illusion I found. Very trippy. If you focus on the center of the flower, the motion stops.
• Brice
Charm, it's still snowing today.... oh no!

I guess I'm the only one here who doesn't like snow??

Charm, I was going to say let's switch countries but it's snowing too where you live right? :(
• charm
and omg, Brice that is such a cute picture lol I just wanna pick that kitty up and brush the snow off its head lol.
• charm
LOL! Uncle Dan, you just described me lol. That's what I'm like. I love the snow, having seen very very little of it living in Asia lol I hate being cold and I always use that excuse for my low cold tolerance lol.
• Uncle Dan
Oh, and I'll be in Zürich for Christmas, but Barcelona for New Years. Woohoooooooo! Vamos a la playa!
• Uncle Dan
But I *like* snow. People from tropical countries come here, like how pretty the snow is but hate how cold it is, and place their excuse as "Well I'm from a hot country..."

And I'm allowed to call "BS! So am I, and I love it." ^^
• Brice
Kayla, it sounds like you've gone through a lot.. my thoughts and prayers are with you. :( Please take care of yourself!

Right now, I'm wondering if it'll snow tomorrow... It actually snowed today here in Vancouver. I don't like snow ... I've had enough of it living in Eastern Canada. :P

Can't someone please make the snow go away? Maybe the almighty Uncle Dan and his godly powers?
• unpacking... lol. lived out of a suitcase for goodness... the last five years?

Uncle Dan--just reading all that was exhausting. I bet you had a blast, though! It always helps to find people who've been other places!

Right now, it's 11 pm my time (that's not the time it'll say on the post--I'm on Brice's time, I think). I've had an insane week...

I'm getting over an infection that would've killed me had I not come back to Canada when I did, and getting over a complication that could've killed me had it not got treated when it did. I'm applying for jobs even though I'm not really in a condition to work yet--I just need to get some sense of a future right now. Buried my baby last month. Waiting for my husband's immigration paperwork to come through--he's still in Dominican Republic. The lawyer says it'll be a year or two yet. Trying to decide what I want to get first--the BEd or a degree in interpretation and translation. Trying to ignore Christmas, and trying to decide if I want to go stay with a friend and her husband in Toronto or if I want to stay at home by myself. The dog just came out of the bedroom wondering why I haven't gone to bed yet--she's trying to drag my feet towards the bedroom. Trying to decide if I want to charge someone with sexual assault (I probably won't... he just had a six-way bypass surgery on his heart and I don't care about him that much). The dog's got my pants now. :) She's staring at me--those eyes! I'm writing songs and stories and wondering if I'm ever going to be able to record or publish--don't think I'd ever do it under my real name, of course... Been reading lots of novels--I just pull five or so off the shelf at the library and take them home. I usually never read anything that isn't non-fiction... I see no point in making up stories when there are plenty of real ones to go around. That's me right now, I think. That's 11:30 and the dog's given up... now I'll go to bed. :)
• Cynthia
Yea hate unpacking here as well. But I like to pack...hmmm. If I don't unpack then there wouldn't be anything to pack right? LOL Anywho...

So yea, I always have one suitcase that's filled with stuff. When I moved to Shanghai, I used a suitcase as a closet because I hated that apt and vowed to move out - which I did.

For the holidays, I will be in the States spending Christmas with my bf :)
• kristine
i... am the same old person. doing the same old stuff. im in between photography and english pre ap projects, working, school, begging my former IS friend's dad who's moving here this jan to let her come to my school, and juggling some normal teenager life problems. Ah, I love life.
• IngridGiles
Well actually, my backpack usually contains things that I need on a regular basis, so I unpack them as I use them.
• IngridGiles
I don't like unpacking either! I usually have to do it all at once while I still have the adrenaline from the move. (This means I don't get much sleep right away.) Anything still in a box after a day or two will remain in a box. That goes for suitcases left over from shorter trips, too, or even backpacks.
• charm
I am going to stay with my parents and be lazy for the whole winter break lol. 6 weeks with no working or studying! I so can't wait lol.
I never unpack lol I hate it. I used to but I am so sick of always packing every few months I just leave everything in the suitcase and take things out when I need them lol. I'm still mostly packed here in the US lol. My roommate keeps wondering when I'm going to unpack, but I prefer it this way. I have stuff I thought I'd need in my suitcases with just clothes, books and toiletries and such put away.
• I'm working for the holidays. In fact, I'm at work right now. It's sleeting outside, and I'm hoping it'll be a slow night at work. Thanksgiving wore everyone out, and we need a break before the Christmas rush gets started. (I work in a fancy pants grocery store.)

I wish I was traveling across Europe.
• Brice
Isa, at least you unpack your boxes - I think I there's still a few I STILL haven't unpacked after a year! LOL :P

Cynthia, oooh when are you going and for how long?

Dan, take pictures!!!

Me, I just woke up not too long ago, checking my emails, going to take the day off today and spend some time with my girlfriend.

What is everyone else doing for the holidays? I know Dan is traveling across Europe.... lucky him! :P
• Uncle Dan
I'm listening to more of Wir Sind Helden (the German band I've been linking to everyone) because, wow, they're good...

While I wait for my Russian friend to call me to go food shopping in a German budget-supermarket, so we can make a mixed lunch for us and a Norwegian friend, in which a Thai/Indian and Hong Kong friend will probably stop by... All in Switzerland.

Woohoo. And tonight it's a Vietnamese friend's birthday party.
• Cynthia
Right at this moment I am still recoverying from going to bed at 3 am in the morning (I'm not made for clubbing, I just ain't LOL).

I am looking forward to my trip back to the US and last minute moving into my new apt :D
• Isa
Well, i'm currently bludgeing the time away before i getting ready to go out to dinner and a film with some friends.
Earlier today however,i finally unpacked the two boxes that i brought back with me from uni. w00t. A full week LATER.

Oh, here's a tongue twister:

"I miss my swiss miss and my swiss miss misses me."
• charm
Brice, that is too funny lol :D I am obsessing over watching the window lol. The snow has really started coming down. It's the most snow I've ever seen in my whole life! So yes, I'm excited lol. It's a lot better watching from inside. I got caught out in it about 2 hours ago and was temporarily blinded and nearly walked out onto the road lol. The wind is really strong and the sky was almost white and blowing snow into my eyes lol. But now I'm inside so it's a lot more fun :D
• Brice
You guys aren't going to believe this, but a mouse kept me awake all night. Its gnawing and skittering woke me and I did an unsuccessful search. It got away!!

It's the ultimate battle: Man vs Mouse.

How ironic that I have a cat avatar, but I can't even find this mouse. I need a REAL cat...

Ugh .. time for a nap, need to catch up on some sleep!
• Ingrid Giles
I am preparing to leave in a couple of days to go to Minnesota to talk to the Board of the organization that I work for, to see if they would like to actually really employ me and give me those lovely things like a salary and medical insurance. That would be one of those application processes that takes like a year.

And, obviously, I got distracted on tckid.
• djiboutigirl
Charm, i understand completely! My first year in the US i'd never written a paper in English before in my life. This semester, i sat down to write a research paper, and realized I had no idea what that was.
One thing i've done to motivate myself when writing papers is that I get to buy a song off itunes or wherever after I written 3-4 pages. It helps, really :-)
Right now... i'm procrastinating as well... waiting for dinnertime, to go to the cafeteria and see friends so that I don't have to write my paper
• Nika
You'll get through it, Charm. Hang in there.

I'm starting a fantastic obsession with this website. That's what I'm doing right now. And I'll keep doing it until I have to leave for work.

In a more general sense, I'm surviving the holidays. I work in retail. Enough said.
• charm
Hmm, well I am also procrastinating. I still have 3 papers to write. Well, 2 and a half now. Obviously, I'm on here and also facebook and staring out the window while I'm meant to be writing. Pretty stressed out right now. I'm determined to keep my average A grades up, but with one of these papers I don't think it's going to happen since I don't even know what I'm doing. :S First year in the states and I've never done a research paper before. Okay, I'm not in a great mood lol I shouldn't have answered right now.
