University in France

Hello,

I got a question, does anybody of you been to a university in France?

I think about studying in France. I´m in bachlor studies right now in germany and as there are closing my institute there will be no chance for me passing my master here.  So as I don´t have that much experience with schools and institutions in diffrent countries I just thought I could go and pass my master in France.

But I´m not quiet sure. I heard a lot of negative things about french facultes.

So, does anybody has any experience with studying in France?

Thanks for your help.

Hi all, I was born in Potsdam Germany, in the Ex-GDR and moved to France when I was 16. I spent 4 Years in Toulouse, going to the German School. After School I went back to Germany, to Berlin and from there I moved 4 Years later to Karlsruhe, where I recently live with my Fiance, whom I met in Toulouse. He is a TCK too, his parents are American and German. In 2005 Siobhan, our daughter was born. She never moved anywhere, but she does speak already english. We tried french too, but she just won´t listen.... :-)

Anyway, it depends. What kinds of questions exactly did you have in mind?? =)

The good thing about french faculties for one, is that they’re free! Then, the quality of the education really vary from one faculty to another. Also, what are you studying ?? Depending on the subject, the time it takes to complete your studies may vary.

What is it you really want to know?

Well, I do my studies right now in “Neuere und Neuste Geschichte” meaning History beginning in the 19 century to second world war, Holocaust and the 60ths. And I have sociology.
I wanted to pass my master in Toulouse, Universite le Mirail, which would bee a faculty of human and social sciences.
I already knew, that the normal faculties are for free. But my sister told me, that the quality may vary. So I’m not sure if I’m making the right decision.
And I heard that you have to pass exams every year and if you don’t manage and fail just one, you have to do the whole year again. This is quite diffrent in Germany, cause if you fail one exam, you can do just this one again but continue your studies the normal way.
The problem is, that we don’t have the money to let me do a semester abroad, cause that cost too much. So if I go the whole family has to come with me, what makes it more difficult to make a decision.
Do they have a compulsory attendance?
Is it hard to get into a university? What kind of documents do I need?
