Hello, I'm Brice. I'm a French, Vietnamese and Ethiopian TCK from Canada. A while back I discovered I was a third culture kid and wanted to help TCKs find a sense of belonging. You can too. Get involved and start helping the community.

LOL..this is too funny…..hehehehe
reminds me of this conversation
“hey, so where are you from?”
“um…i was born in Chile”
“where?”
“chile”
“chili?? hahahahaha…hot stuff..chili..haha”
“it’s chile. in south america”
“oh. hahaha ok. like near colombia?”
“right beside argentina. the long, skinny country”
“ohhhhhhhhh ok. so where in teh US are you from?”
“umm..nowhere. i moved here one year ago, so i guess im from michigan..where my school is.”
“really? you kinda have an accent..where’d you learn english?”
“in the philippines”
“where in canada is that?”
–silence–
“it’s in asia..near indonesia”
–silence–
“oh.”
hahahahahahha…sometimes people ask me if we had streets in Chile or the Philippines…or if there’s pavement anywhere..so i just play along and say
“no..there’s actually just grass and dirt everywhere. i had to go school in a donkey”
and they look at me really weird..but i know they’re satisfied. that’s the kind of answer they wanted. lol
I actually found one picture describing a world (or just China?) according to Taiwanese, but I cannot remember where I found it. Unfortunately it’s in Chinese so unless you read Chinese it will not be funny lol
Doing deputation in America:
“where y’all from?”
“Australia”
– baffled look –
“musta taken a while to drive here!”
“Um. Yes. It’s an island.”
– baffled look —
“Speak some Australian to us!”
“Yeah, listen, lady - I’m 10. I’ve been in Australia a grand total of 2 years in my life. This is on a par with asking if I speak Mexican. To the best of my knowledge, we speak English there too.” (this one was only in my head)
Leaving America, after 5 years:
“where y’all going?”
“Australia, and then PNG.”
“P N G?”
“Papua New Guinea”
“Where’s that, in Africa?”
“haha no. It’s just north of Australia.”
“Where’s Australia?”
“Dear God, are you serious?! It’s a CONTINENT. There’s only 7 of them.” (ditto - internal commentary)
LOL.. ahh its funny how we all have these conversations.
Cousin: This is Selam my cousin, she’s from Mozambique!
Friend: Oh really! your not eritrean??
Me: I am, I just live there.
Friend: Ohhhh
1 minute later
Friend: So Zimbabwe is in west Africa right?
Me (puzzled): No it’s in southern Africa.
Friend: Ok. How is it there?
Me: I wouldn’t know. I don’t live there.
Friend: Oh… but you said…
Me: Um I said I lived in Mozambique.
Friend (puzzled): Oh (pause) right
Next day at a soccer field
I hear a friend yelling in my direction “ZIM!”
Me (turn to my cousin): whos zim?
Cousin (laughing): You
Me (sarcastically): Ohhh ok makes sense
Lol, I don’t even try anymore. I just tell stories when people enquire… there facial expressions keep me amused
I lived in Belize in the 70s, and came to the states for a couple of utterly disastrous years of American high school
American student: So, where are you from?
Me: Oh, I live in Belize
American: Belize? Where is that?
Me: It’s in Central America
American: ohhhh, you mean like, Ohio?
Me: ………………………………
I swear on a stack of bibles this is a true conversation that I had a year later. I got really tired of the old “where are you from” question, as few American students seemed to have ever heard of Belize. But before Belize, I had lived in Italy for 8 years. So the next high school I went to (in Oregon) when I would get the inevitable goddamned question of “HEY, WHERE ARE YOUR FROM, MAN?”; I tried a new response.
American student: So, where are you from?
Me: Oh, I am from Europe
American: Oh, you mean, like France?
Me: Yes, sort of like France, but Italy
American: So Europe is part of Italy now?
Me: Uhhhhhmmmm, actually, Italy is part of Europe
American: Oh no, you’re wrong, Europe is part of both Italy AND France!
Me: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh
American: Don’t you know this? They are no longer divided!
Me: Uhhhhhhhhhhh……….
American: Seriously, you really should read the paper more!
Me: Uhhhhhhhh…..got to go buy pencils in the bookstore…..see ya…
In fairness to Americans: they are knowledgeable about their own country (and by this i mean N. America) and are generous and want you to have a good time when you are there. Like, i don’t even know how many states there are - i can name them but i can’t point to all of them on the map…maybe i should learn?
PS. But dude, the kangaroos and uninhabited cracked me up. But hang on — where’s NZ?
I dare anyone to name a country that makes as interesting TV shows as America. Tell me…what is Europe’s/Australia/Asian’s version of things like “The Wire”, “Dexter”, “The L Word”, “The Sopranos”, “Weeds”.
And what I love about America is they know there music. I can’t talk to anyone in Australia about music & social issues like I can to people in America. What I like about America is the opinions, even if I disagree with them. I would rather deal with than with the false political-correctness I encounter elsewhere.
lol
@ ISA
I agree. Now I won’t lie girl, L.A. is not an easy city to make friends in but I would take living in the US over Oz/Canada/Caribbean anyday (though I love chilling in Canada & adore spending time in the caribbean). America has so many damn perks. And you cannot beat the Ethnic diversity of the place which for me is another perk.
As far as the NZ musing - watch “Flight of the Conchords” - than everything will be understood, lol.
Is it just me…or is NZ waaaaaaaaaaaaay more cutting edge than Australia when it comes to music/film/satire? I am loving the Naked Samoans, “Samoan Wedding”, Flight, “Whale Rider”, “Once Were Warriors” etc etc etc
