I was listening to a song by French singer Gerald de Palmas who is a TCK himself. And i was wondering what other music makes you think of TCKs and/or any music by a TCK that has helped you?

Well, there’s one song that reminds me of being a TCK. She’s not a TCK as such but she moved around the US for a lot of her childhood.
The song is A Place Called Home by Kim Richey.

Brian Molko from the band “Placebo” is another TCK.
Born to a American international banker father and a Scottish mother, Brian Molko’s family moved frequently during his childhood, including spells in Scotland, Liberia, Lebanon and Luxembourg. Molko has referred to a period spent in his mother’s home town of Dundee, Scotland as “where I grew up”.[1] He attended Goldsmiths College in London, where he studied drama. He describes his childhood as a period when he felt very lonely and alienated. He started to wear make-up at the age of 11. He was an actor in a school drama theater.
While Molko was brought up in a strict household that disapproved of artistic expression (his father wanted him to become a banker) he rebelled by affecting an androgynous image, wearing nail polish, lipstick and eyeliner, and listening to punk. In his late teens, he came out as bisexual.
Here’s “You don’t care about us” by Placebo.
If it’s a bad case, you’re on the rampage.
Another memory… scarred.
You’re at the wrong place, you’re on the back page,
you’re in the getaway… car.
Lyrics:http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/placebo/youdontcareaboutus.html

I always wonder if those people even know they are TCKs and if all of this could’ve been prevented?

My “TCK theme song” is the Jazz classic Gypsy In My Soul written by Moe Jaffe and Clay Boland.
Someone is calling me
From way out yonder
It’s just the gypsy in my soul
There is no greater life of which I’m fonder
It’s just the gypsy in my soul
Ain’t got no cares
Got no strings
But my heart, it’s got wings
If I am fancy free and I love to wander
It’s just the gypsy in my soul

Hey here is a song by Corneille.
He’s a TCK too. He was born in Germany to Rwandan parents and lived there ’til he was 6 then went back to Rwanda until the genocide in 1994 where his family was killed. He managed to escape to Germany where he was adopted by friends of his parents. He finished up school, then went to Montreal for uni.
“Terre” by Corneille.
Loin des cauchemars de mon passé
Loin de mon enfance
Loin des rues en terre des quartiers
Mon adolescence
Loin de mes danses avec la mort
Loin de mes souffrances
Je suis chez moi malgré l’apparence
Car ici
[Far away from the nightmares of my past
Far from my childhood
Far from the suburban dirt roads
My adolescene
Far from my dances with death
Far from my sufferings
I'm at home despites appearances
Because here,
I have refound joy in life, i am well here,
I have found the tase of love, i am well here,
I have made a life, a family, a country for myself
I am well here.]
[A bit of earth has never made home
That it what time taught me
When i look, i see around me a new sense of fatherland.]
J’ai vécu l’enfer sur la terre
Qu’on appelle mon pays
[I've lived through hell on earth: what they called my country
I ask forgiveness from you, my brothers and sisters
understand my cry (sorry).
I lost all my loved ones in the acursed country.
This is the sad story of our lives.
Oh! But here.
I can do everything here, i can dream.
I am well here.
I am not ungrateful, nor a coward.
It's just that i am well here.
I am a nomad, I am at home where i am welcomed/accommodated.
Even here in the cold.]
[We sacrifice many lives in the name of the fatherland,
We sell out our loved ones, we betray ourselves
And there is always one thing that the world forgets. We do not carry the earth when it is over.]
Well, Bricee et Marie et al, what do you think of the translation? I am unsure abt the end.
What do you think?

So, I’m resurrecting this 3 day old thread
because as I was listening to music last night I realized that one of my favourite groups are TCKs.
Les Nubians (born to a French and a Camerounian parents and grew up in Chad and in France)
One of my favourite songs is “Voyager” which is (poorly) translated here:
Sous un soleil entété
N’Djamena la belle est réveillée
Le muezzin interpelle les fidèles de sa voix de miel
Remerciant le Très Haut pour sa bonté
J’emporte dans ma mémoire
La saveur de ces heures
Les chants et les voix
Les douleurs et les pleurs
Lâ-bas, j’ai vu la guerre et l’espérance
Mais
Ailleurs, on fait mieux la différence
( Under a stubborn sun,
The beautiful N’Djamena is awake
The muezzin interpellates the faithful with his honey voice
Thanking the Great for his goodness
I bring in my memory
The savors of these hours
The songs and the voices
The pains and the cries
Over there, I saw war and hope
But
Elsewhere, we tell apart better)
Partir loin et découvrir
Quel air l’humanité respire
Comment nos contemporains vivent
Sous d’autres lumières
Voyager
(Leaving far and discovering
What air humanity breathes
How our contemporaries live
Under different light
Travel)
Voyager
Rien ne m’est plus essentiel
Plier bagage,
(Travel
Nothing is more essential to me
Making your bags
Searching for other more real immages than the ones in the current window
Mirrors of ignorance and extreme egotism)
Je me déclare citoyenne universelle
Je m’offre le passeport de terrienne
Décide que toute terre est mienne
Rio, Yaoundé, Paris, c’est la mème
Chacun son karma
Le mien d’ètre nubienne
(I declare myself universal citizen
I offer myself hte passport of earthling
Decide that all earth is mine
Rio, Yaoundé, Paris, it’s all the same
To everyone their karma,
Mine is to be Nubian)
Partir loin et découvrir
Quel air l’humanité respire
Comment nos contemporains vivent
Sous d’autres lumières,
Loin d’ici
(Leaving far and discovering
What air humanity breathes
How our contemporaries live
Under different light
Far from here)
Voyager
(Travel)
Aller toujours plus loin.

Resurrecting this thread to post This Time Tomorrow, by The Kinks. I heard this when I was watching The Darjeeling Limited the other night (Which is a fun little movie). Nelly Furtado’s “I’m like a bird” is a perfect TCK song!
Lyrics
You’re beautiful, that’s for sure
You’ll never ever fade
You’re lovely but it’s not for sure
That I won’t ever change
And though my love is rare
Though my love is true
[Chorus:]
I’m like a bird, I’ll only fly away
I don’t know where my soul is, I don’t know where my home is
(and baby all I need for you to know is)
I’m like a bird, I’ll only fly away
I don’t know where my soul is , I don’t know where my home is
All I need for you to know is
Your faith in me brings me to tears
Even after all these years
And it pains me so much to tell
That you don’t know me that well
And though my love is rare
Though my love is true
[Chorus]
It’s not that I wanna say goodbye
It’s just that every time you try to tell me that you love me
Each and every single day I know
I’m going to have to eventually give you away
And though my love is rare
And though my love is true
Hey I’m just scared
That we may fall through

This is a song by U2, and probably was mean to mean something more religious…but to me it is a hundred percent tck song
And love
Is not the easy thing
The only baggage
That you can bring
Not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can’t leave behind
And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it’s a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong
Walk on
Walk on
What you got, they can’t steal it
No they can’t even feel it
Walk on
Walk on
Stay safe tonight
You’re packing a suitcase for a place
None of us has been
A place that has to be believed
To be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird
In an open cage
Who will only fly
Only fly for freedom
Walk on
Walk on
What you got
You can’t deny it
Can’t sell it or buy it
Walk on
Walk on
You stay safe tonight
And I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
You can only take so much
Walk on
Walk on
Home
Hard to know what it is
If you never had one
Home
I can’t say where it is
But I know I’m going
Home
That’s where the hurt is
And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
You can only take so much
Walk on
Leave it behind
You’ve got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you feel
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you care
It’s only time
And I’ll never fill up all my mind(???)
All that you sense
All that you scheme
All you dress up
And all that you see
All you create
All that you wreck
All that you hate

“you belong to me”
is a classic, and covered by many many people, and is the best tck song EVER. my favorite version is kate rusby’s.
I love how the song combines nostalgia ( a common tck feeling) and a plain sense of “the worl is home”…
beautiful love story as well…

Looptroop - Fly Away
[Verse One]
Even when we not on tour I’m sleeping on the floor
Always on the road, on the couch, or with some girl I don’t know
Hear myself say - I gotta go, I gotta leave, we gotta roll
a restless soul, mom I love you, promise I’ll give you a call
once we checked out, sound checked, checked in the hotel room
Yeah, I know you want that same kind of perfume
off course I’ll get it, get my brother on the phone
Tell grandma I’ll help her with that garden stuff as soon as I’m home
We’ll sit down and talk when I’m in Vsters
I don’t know when, but once I’ll get, I’ll send you my schedule for shows
I’ll call the booking right away, I’m going down to Jay in Malmoe
meet up with the guys in Gothenburg, work on the album
They say, home is where you’re heart at, don’t know where to start at
got loved ones all over, cross oceans and borders
I mean I love to travel, hate to fly, I want to go, but hate goodbyes
plus it’s getting worse - Looptroop is on the rise
At times you’d like to press pause, no more ciaos and adios
but I’ll be back in bit, now I’m out, business calls
[Chorus]
I gotta fly away. Gotta catch the train. We gotta catch the plane
but I really can’t complain. We gotta fly away. Pack my bags today
We gotta ride the wave. See you in a couple of days
[Verse Two]
I’m sorry for all I’m sorrys that came too late
I’m sorry for the times that I went away
but yo, I’m still here cus my love came to stay
Remember that even though the weather is grey today
I know we had some situations and I hate to say
that I don’t know the answers and how to erase the pain
Close your eyes for the things that led us astray
Then open them up towards a straighter way
All I ever wanted was to hear you say my name
Capture this second we’ll forever stay the same
I take the blame for all my great escapes
there’s a high price to pay for travellin state to state
I’m gone right now but you won’t wait in vain
I’ll be back before you know it to put the aches on layaway
Don’t be afraid I know we’ll remain ok
till I’ll be back keep in touch through the radio waves
[Chorus]
Sometimes I fly away, but don’t cry babe, cus you know I love you girl and
you know that you’re my world. It’s just you and me, that’s the way we
supposed to be
[Verse Three]
You flew away like you were scared that I would clip your wings
after five years we haven’t kicked it since
but straight up this ain’t no pimpin’ thing:
You a true queen baby only fit for kings
Maybe I couldn’t see in the midst of things
now in my chain of life you’re the missin’ link
Just to hear your voice used to lift my chin
and I still feel the taste from when I kissed your skin
I’m looking at your picture wishing we’d click again
next time I make sure to get our shit in synch
next time I be your man through the thick and thin
I promise no more committing wicked sins
I buy you a house with a picket fence
get you everything you could give me twins
No bullshit on tour never hittin’ skins
chasin’ no groupies with chicken wings
Not the type to chain you between bed and kitchen sink
I merely praise the place where your lips begin
Your hips begin - I know you’re quick to think:
It’s pathetic, but I’d be the richest prince
if you once more unzip and let me sip your drink
Addicted to your love worse than nicotine
But there’s too much pain for me to dig within
so I’m a let the music massage my crippled limbs..
[Chorus + Outro]
and just fly away, into my hideaway
sometimes I lie awake and cry the night away
why you had to fly away?
Now you miles away
You took my smile away
why couldn’t you have stayed?

btw, that’s curtis mayfield singing “move on up”. this song is just so encouraging and full of hope. here are the lyrics:
Hush now child,
and don’t you cry
Your folks might understand you
by and by
Move on up
towards your destination
You may find
from time to time
Complications
Bight your lip
and take a trip
Though there may be
wet road ahead
You cannot slip
So move on up
and peace you will find
Into the steeple
of beautiful people
Where there’s only one kind
So hush now child
and don’t you cry
Your folks might understand you
by and by
Just move on up
and keep on wishing
Remember your dreams
are your only schemes
So keep on pushing
Take nothing less -
not even second best
And do not obey -
you must have your say
You can past the test
Move on up!

I think that Sara Grove’s song, “Painting Pictures of Egypt” reminds me of being a TCK…
———–
I don’t want to leave here
I don’t want to stay
It feels like pinching to me
Either way
And the places I long for the most
Are the places where I’ve been
They are calling out to me
Like a long lost friend
It’s not about losing faith
It’s not about trust
It’s all about comfortable
When you move so much
And the place I was wasn’t perfect
But I had found a way to live
And it wasn’t milk or honey
But then neither is this
I’ve been painting pictures of Egypt,
Leaving out what it lacks
The future feels so hard,
And I wanna go back!
But the places that used to fit me,
Cannot hold the things I’ve learned
Those roads were closed off to me
While my back was turned!
The past is so tangible
I know it by heart
Familiar things are never easy
To discard
I was dying for some freedom
But now I hesitate to go
I am caught between the Promise
And the things I know
I’ve been painting pictures of Egypt,
Leaving out what it lacks
The future feels so hard,
And I wanna go back!
But the places that used to fit me,
Cannot hold the things I’ve learned
Those roads were closed off to me
While my back was turned!
If it comes too quick
I may not appreciate it
Is that the reason behind all this time and sand?
And if it comes too quick
I may not recognize it
Is that the reason behind all this time and sand?

Faun - Fort

… and this song isn’t about us, but rather the people we left behind who maybe did care about us.
Trains and boats and planes are passing by.
They mean a trip to Paris or Rome
To someone else but not for me.
The trains and boats and planes
Took you away, away from me.
We were so in love, and high above
We had a star to wish upon. Wish
And dreams come true, but not for me
The trains and boats and planes
Took you away, away from me.
You are from another part of the world,
You had to go back a while and then
You said you soon would return again.
I’m waiting here like I promised to.
I’m waiting here but where are you?
Trains and boats and planes took you a way,
But ev’ry time I see them I pray
And if my prayers can cross the sea,
The trains and the boats and planes
Will bring you back, back home to me.

Song performed by Oleta Adams, Brenda Russell, Justin Guarini
You can reach me by railway, you can reach me by trailway
You can reach me on an airplane, you can reach me with your mind
You can reach me by caravan, cross the desert like an Arab man
I don’t care how you get here, just- get here if you can
You can reach me by sailboat, climb a tree and swing rope to rope
Take a sled and slide down slow, into these arms of mine
You can jump on a speedy colt, cross the border in a blaze of hope
I don’t care how you get here, just- get here if you can
There are hills and mountains between us
Always something to get over
If I had my way, then surely you would be closer
I need you closer
You can windsurf into my life, take me up on a carpet ride
You can make it in a big balloon, but you better make it soon
You can reach me by caravan, cross the desert like an Arab man
I don’t care how you get here, just- get here if you can
I don’t care, I dont care, I need you right here right now
I need you right here, right now, right by my side (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I don’t care how you get here, just- get here if you can.

And of course…The Beatles’ In My Life
There are places i’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life i’ve loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When i think of love as something new
Though i know i’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i’ll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
Though i know i’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i’ll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
In my life i love you more
