Since I don’t know Italian or Spanish or German or even French, I am going to start a thread with a language I know - Mandarin!  I know there are a lot of people learning Chinese out there so this may be a good opportunity to learn :D

So, let’s start!

这是我的 limited Chinese response :) You’re right, it is a good way to learn. What’s the English translation of what you wrote? 我不知道 enough 汉字 to understand everything. Hope this Englese wasn’t too frustrating to decipher!

I love this comment :D I used to talk like this with my friends back in high school :D We call it “Chinglish” haha!

    Basically what I said was:
“Hello everyone! My name is Cynthia. Very happy to meet you!

Actually my Chinese isn’t as good as my English, I can better express my thoughts in English.

Anyways, I hope many people can use this opportunity to better your Chinese ability (bad Chinese grammar there oops :-O). Good luck!”

我的post(i don’t know how to say this in Chinese haha)是普通话,但写的是“繁体字”(traditional Chinese).

:) I was going to call it Chinglish but then I thought that was more Chinese-English, so that’s why I switched it to Englese, which is more English-Chinese :P I need to look up some of those characters. If you have time to post the pinyin it would make it easier to look up the meanings. I need to enlarge my vocabulary. I’ve used almost all I know already :P 再见! 我学习“TEFL” certificate online… it’s going ok so far. Ok, I’ll save the rest of what I know for another post! 我会说 “Is your bicycle new or old? red or black/green etc.?” Ok, I’ll be back after I learn some more vocab.

I’m pretty much a banana, I’m useless at mandarin/cantonese. Plus I don’t know how to get the characters up on the computer.
In Malaysia we call it manglish, which can either mean ‘malaysian-english’ or ‘mangled-english’. :P Only in Manglish, it consists of mandarin, english, cantonese, malay and tamil. And possibly hindi and hokkien as well.

Haha my dad and I used to joke about how we spoke “Franglais” (Franglish?) all the time…I remember once asking him in the car was it weird that I couldn’t stick onto one language and always flipped flopped between the three (”Franglispanol” would be more accurate but i never spoke spanish with my dad)… He said no it wasn’t and that was that…reassuring enough for a 6 year old :)

by the way i DESPERATELY must start learning mandarin…. I know about 3 words and will be in shanghai in only…. 2 1/2 months!! someone pleaseeee help :)

Actually means “What is wrong with you?”

Means “How are you?” (I think this is what you meant?)

一店店 should be “一点点” (店 means shop)

To be grammatically correct should be

Hope you don’t mind me correcting you!

And yes quite impressive your Chinese ability :)

Marie if you want to start learning Chinese try podcasts like www.chinesepod.com (there are others but this one is the one I use). It’s very entertaining and quite useful to start getting used to the language.

I can’t speak or write much Chinese :-) but it’s a fantastically fun language to learn!

Today I was working at my ice rink and a crowd of Chinese people came, so I got really excited, because I could understand a decent portion of their conversation.
Anyway, on the way out, the kids were dropping off their rental skates, and the mother told the daughter (in Chinese) to give the skates to “jiejie.”
I got called eldest sister today.
    I feel old.
And then I went and scared the bejesus out of the girl by saying “Xiexie, meimei.” All the kids were actually scared of me the second I spoke Chinese–all the parents were just fine with it…
    Odd day.

No, the girl actually ran and hid behind her mother…
Only one kid didn’t duck for cover, because she was asking her father how I knew Chinese.
