The Fetal Diaries #38: First, Atlantis, now, New Zealand.

So I was on Facebook, looking at all the pics I tagged today (I have been tagging and putting captions on the crazy amounts of pics I took during my trip to Cali in small bunches, so I won’t get too bored) and was, at the same time, talking to Jerry on MSN. Anyways, I came across a certain pic of myself standing infront of the Universal Studios globe.

I looked at it for a bit, then moved on to the next one, thinking, there’s something wrong with that pic… So I went back to it, and stared at it for another minute or so. What I found was on of the most hilarious things I’ve seen in my life. Like I said, I was talking to Jerry (and for those who dunno who Jer is, he lives in NZ). I then ask him, after calming down (and this is a direct quote off of the MSN convo), “And issit just me, or is there no NZ on this globe?” then I linked him this pic:

I mean, that’s just sad… No New Zealand on that globe indeed. I’m not sure if it’s just being covered up by that guy there, but I’m pretty sure it’s not there.. Jerry thinks it’s phenomenal. Calls it “the world-minus-NZ pic” and he says that it seems like NZ, like many of the species it used to contain, is now extinct. I think I shall call it that too. I won’t be surprised if I don’t find the Philippines either hahaha. So, er, what do you guys think?

Born in the Philippines, then lived in Abu Dhabi, UAE for almost 4 years. Immigrated to Calgary, Canada (one of the most, if not THE most diverse city in Canada), but lives even farther north now (where it seems to be the opposite of Calgary).

LOL. My first reaction to that was that Universal Studios probably thought that the vast majority of Americans visiting would be too ignorant or oblivious to notice such detail… Hence, no need to spend money on another piece of metal.

But then I realized I was stereotyping.

Shame really… it looks so incomplete.

Kind of hard to put island nations on that grid isn’t it? A country needs a lot of landmass to not fall through the holes :p

But yes, when we had a geography test at my high school on Oceania, some American kid (a TCK of course since he was there!), put Sydney on the west coast of Australia for example because he was thinking of California and where SF and LA where. In fact he placed all the major Australian cities according to the ‘American model’ and wrote at the bottom of the page: I am ignorant about the geography in this part of the world, sorry…

In those days they didn’t have the Internet mind you, so it wasn’t as easy as going on Google and typing: Australia, map. You did have to go to library and borrow an atlas if your parents didn’t have one.

So yea….Universal Studios excluded it on..um purpose, yea thats it. We excluded on purposed for mass advertising for our new sitcom/drama called “Jaws Dundee”….”

I was explaining to Kristine that sometimes they will eliminate islands or small landmasses from an apparently insignificant globe. I’ve seen some countries being eliminated.

And besides, since when did Universal Studios became a source for geography education? :p
