SPAINGLORIOUS BLOG #7 Columbus, Spain

Yesterday I wasn’t in a very good mood. I wasn’t in a very bad mood I was just irritated by things to the point where I found them hilarious…which probably means I’m crazy but that’s neither here nor there. Yesterday my particular annoyance was that there are so many American students in Granada. Now I understand that Spanish students don’t really come to the city until October, because they are on holiday, working, or they live in other Spanish cities but that did not stop me from feeling the way I did. Basically, there are just entirely too many Americans here. If feels as though the entire female uni aged population of Columbus, Ohio was airlifted and dropped in to the middle of Granada like some kind of preppy collegiate bomb. Which led me, yesterday, to refer to Granada as Columbus Spain. Ohio is not just an arbitrary place, there are a lot of girls from Ohio State on my program so it as the first place I thought of. Nevermind that there is probably a town or city called Columbus in Spain.

Basically, I was foolish. When I decided to come here, I did not think about the number of other people who were going to come to Granda too. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve made some great friends, friends that I will still be in contact with if I am to grow old but I didn’t come all the way to Spain to make friends with girls from Ohio if you know what I mean.

It gets better. Not only am I not living with Spanish people (which was what I wanted to do) but the 3 girls that I’m living with are alll….ALLL American. I even lived with one of them last year at my “home” university.

 I found this all hilarious…

Ouch. I went to Columbus for a football game a while back, so I’ve seen first-hand just how dumb people from there can act. Definitely have absolutely no intentions of ever returning.

    Ever.

Hahaha and how do you really feel? lol, I have no incriminating evidence as to the character of people from Ohio, I just know that the number of Americans was really getting to me and that’s how it came out.

oh Elizabeth! I’m sorry to hear things aren’t working out for you like you wished for! I know how you feel. I am a person who also gets frustrated when things don’t come out the way I planned, especially trips.

I don’t really have a good piece of advice…but try to make the most of it. Try to enjoy what’s around you. I mean, try to find little things that ARE spanish around you.
Or maybe try not to hang out with your american roomates too much.

Well, these are just some suggestions. I Hope things get better for you :)

ElizabethD: Gotta avoid popular places like Granada if you want to get away from other foreigners. ;) It also sounds more glamorous to say: I studied Spanish in Granada versus I studied Spanish in Malaga. Malaga? Where the h*ll is that?

Malaga being a passe and unpopular area these days contains much less foreigners especially Americans, i.e. the Americans in this area are mostly in Fuengirola now.

Gone are the days when ‘everyone speaks English in Torremolinos’. These days it’s difficult to find anyone who does - which means you have ample opportunities to practice speaking Spanish. ;)

P.S. On a side note, even though the main capital was Granada in the days of the Moors, Malaga was also Moorish and they have the remains of their Alcazaba to show for this. It was a prosperous trading port in its heyday I believe.

Oh. I’m so sorry! I know the exact frustration you feel. I was in Toledo years ago with some kids from school. Of all the great Spanish restaurants available, the wanted to go to McDonalds. Come all the way to Spain to eat McDonalds!!! lol.

What kind of Americans are they? I hope not the loud types who think that everyone in the world should be American and totally disrespect the culture of their host country.

Have you gone to see the Alhambra yet?
