Spainglorious blog #2 Crash at Barajas Airport, Madrid
166 Passengers
6 Crew members
26 Survivers, all injured
I flew into that airport yesterday. When I flew in I thought the landscape was beautiful, now smoke billows from the twisted metal of a Spanair plane and ambulances zoom in and out of the airport. The people on board the plane were bound for Las Palmasfor holiday, they were barely off the runway before they crashed.
It makes me think of all the times I have flown on a plane. I probably take flying for granted. I assume that I will be safe and in all honesty I think I will be. They say you are more likely to have a car accident than a plane accident but I’m sure fatality is more likely in a plane accident than a car accident. I’m not worried about my mortality, I am just sad for the families of those who died in the crash. I will be keeping them in my thoughts.
UPDATE: Only 19 people survived, some are still in critical condition. Of the 22 children on board, only 3 are still alive
I as born in London, England to children of Jamaican immigrants. I have lived in England, Venezuela, USA, and China. I am currently a university student stateside.

Aviation disasters are of some interest to TCKs because flying is so much a part of our lives. I sincerely hope that neither the relatives nor friends of members of TCKID were not on this flight.

Hi Elizabeth,
I live in Madrid and hope you will have a good time here. Like everyone around here, I am shocked and saddened by what happened yesterday…I sort of felt like the whole city was re-living March 11, 2004 all over again. I must aso add that I’m outraged by the sensationalism that has surrounded media coverage of the event and by some reporters’ lack of common sense and sensitivity.
I am catching a flight tomorrow from Barajas. The accident has made me not want to go there tomorrow, and even less so get on an airplane (I know it’s stupid, but this has struck too close to home). However, my rational side still thinks that flying with commercial airlines is, by far, the safest mean of transportation. Although it is true that you’re less likely to survive a plane crash than a car crash, there are thousands of cars accidents each day and only a couple air disasters per year

I don’t know how reporters look at themselves in the mirror or don’t have higher suicide rates. If I made money from reporting fatalities and exploiting grieving family members for news clips I would be ashamed of myself.
Things like this are really terrible but life does and must go on so I hope you have a good flight and please keep the families of this attrocity in your thoughts.
