Second Thoughts…but now I’m confused

 Cadpig here! ^_^

Alright, I’m kind of in a predicament right now and need advice. I was set on going to college in America after the disaster that was High School in the Philippines. However, my family is getting transferred to Singapore.

My Dad wants me to do High School all over again there. My school in the Phil. is not recognized in the States so I’m going to have to take the GED. If I do HS again in Singapore it’s good because it’s recognized in America and I won’t have to take the GED.

Now, the annoying thing is by the time I finish, if I choose to do HS again I’ll be 21 and my best friends will already be finished with college. I was held back in 1st grade cause the elementary in Phil. didn’t teach me how to read.

That was good because the most important events of my life would’ve never happened if I wasn’t held back but I don’t know if I can cope doing HS all over again. On top of that my family has issues that will make my stay unpleasant. I mean, I don’t want to go with them if all their going to do is fight with eachother the whole time!

So, if you were me. Take the chance in America or have a do over in Singapore?

    wow, tough choice!

I don’t know what the GED is, but it sounds like it’s a test. Do you think you’re not prepared for it? Is it very hard?
Can’t you study for it? Is there a pre-GED class that you can take in the US?

Doing HS all over again sounds so boring! And non-sense! You’ve done it once, why do it again?!
And the age thing is also kind of creepy. When you finish HS your friends will be finishing college. I don’t know about you but I hate to feel “late” in compairson to others.

And what about doing college in Singapore? (I know almost nothing about Singapore, are there any good colleges there?)

What about the countries? Would you feel more comfortable living in Singapore or in America?

I can’t make the decision for you, but hopefully these questions will help you think more about your options.
And I hope I didn’t make you even more confused! :D

GED = General Educational Development Test

I guess you don’t want to go to college in the Philippines, from what I gather…well I guess I’m making assumptions based on the fact that you didn’t really like your high school life in the first place.

Hmmm…it seems like your set on going to college in the US. Have you checked out other options, other places that might accept your high school degree: Canada, Australia, NZ??

Singapore has the National University which has a pretty good reputation so you might wanna look into that. If you really want to go to the US, an option for you is to go to NUS in Singapore, and transfer from there…it’s an option.

Here’s my story: I was kinda set on going to Georgetown University, I had all my papers and stuff set out but I then wanted to stay in the Philippines and see how everything goes in the land of my forefathers (LOL, I make that sound dramatic).
Anyway, I’ll be honest, at first I felt so much like an outsider, I thought that before I knew it, I’ll be out of there. However, I made a few good friends which pushed me to just stay and finish my degree there. I thought to myself, I had a French Brevet des collèges, an IB Bilingual Diploma…it would be great to have something from my passport country. And it worked out.

Never despair, things always seem to work out!! =)

P.S. I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to comment on how your family life is affecting this decision since I don’t feel comfortable asking you for the details. Hope you understand ;)

Thanks you guys! I think I can think this through in a more stable fashion now that I’ve slept it over. I’d love to go to another country for college but the prob is my father is being unreasonable.

“It’s the US (my goal for so long) or my way!(doin’ it all over again)”

I guess I’m still kinda scared that I won’t pass the GED.-___- I did pass with a pretty good score in my SAT though.

Well, thanks though cause I think I’m now set on putting my foot down if you know what I mean. I’ve asked my grandparents and my mother about this and they all agreed it was ridiculous to do HS all over again.

    I think so too!xD Guess this was a spur of the moment thing cause I didn’t really have anyone to talk to at the time.^^;

I think you’ll be fine with GED :) I saw some GED tutorial books before and they seem pretty straightforward. There are a lot of undereducated (is this a derogatory term?) people in the US who end up taking the GED so that they can get a better job so if they can do it so can you!

    Good luck!

    Hi Cadpig,

While the GED in itself is not “worth” the same as a high school diploma (for those who only have that and never finished high school), once you are in a university it doesn’t matter anymore. If you can get into a university of your choice without the american high school diploma then getting one is completely useless. Don’t worry too much about the GED test…american testing is pretty straightforward and if you use the guides that they offer you’ll be just fine.
