Same person, different clothes - how ethnic dress influences other’s perceptions
This post has 339 views
Below I am posting an interesting series of photographs taken by one of my top-favorite photographers, Rakesh Syal. It shows the same man, in different ethnic dress. Notice how one’s perception of him and even of his ethnicity change with each new wardrobe, even with simple changes of headress and glasses, etc. A fascinating study.

amazing!!! wow i love this because I am such a fashion fanatic it’s kinda scary and every1 noes me as the girl who buys costume rather than cloth. and I noe exactly why I am so obsessed with unusual fashion. It’s simply because I hate the stereotype tat comes along with dressing up, tat’s why i have this weird habit of buying an item from every fad (everything from neon to suits to hippie) and NEVER repeat an item of a style that I already own. Just because I want to be everything and anything and hate to be classfied.
and when I saw this i noticed wt a wonderful way it is to make this anti-stereotype statement. which is why i have acquired the habit of buying the local dress as my souvenir wherever I travel(it’s reli not tat much more expensive than a bunch of pens and mugs which I wud eventually lose anyways. damn i love the mexican dress i bought last month LOL even though my frds thought I was crazy.

Girl, I understand. I rock fashions a few years before the masses jump on them. People think I’m weird…than I have the last laugh 3 years later

HAHAHA sweet!
i noe…and it’s amazing i feel like i can almost fortell where the trend is going…
like my previous obsession was neon and in a few months everything in store was like electric pink, blue yellow and orange i am just like…ok i am getting tired of this now. LOL just because everyone else is now following along…My obsession before that was metallics…and it turned out to be quite an accurate prediction too. LOL
hmmmmm I foretell…Shiny fake leather plastic looking things and lot of leather belts! LOL

Cool - I also was into neon orange, yellow, and green, a whole year before it became ‘in’. I’d go to high school in neon orange socks, pants, shirt, jacket, toque, gloves…
Then I got into high tops of all colors and sizes. And now suddenly where I live high tops are the in thing and even the models in the Sears catalogue wear them…
What I hate though is I still wear high tops, because I think they’re great, but now it looks like I’m just going with the trends…
One trend I was really happy that came along was when everyone all of a sudden started wearing (modified) leather mukluks (and Inuit boot), and (faux) sheepskin trimmed suede jackets, which looked a bit like a cross between native deerskin clothing and Inuit parkas… so then I could wear North Canadian style and be ‘in’.

Hmm, he is a good photographer! Great pics Jack, thanks for sharing
Ooh, mukluks are cute! Haha. And yeah, high tops in northern Canada. You can’t go wrong.
I don’t necessarily dress weird or differently. Well at least, not as much as I used to. These days, I just try to keep it simple. So plain t’s and jeans and white sneakers. Nothing too flashy XD
But I do know that that’s true. Your clothes kind of change a person’s perception of you. Those pics alone are good examples.
I remember when I first came to Canada, I dressed differently from the Calgarians in my school. I then eventually picked up my Calgarian friends’ tastes in clothes, very simple colors, but good pieces. I didn’t do that to fit in, I guess I kinda just got used to seeing that and started dressing similarly. Then we moved away from Calgary, still haven’t changed how I dress.. Then just a few weeks ago, my sister looks at me, laughs, and goes, “You look like a Calgarian high schooler with those clothes…” I then looked at the mirror and realised, a year after moving out, that I’ve picked that up.
And I thought I only pick up local slangs and accents. Apparently, I pick up styles too.
