PMS and PMDD

I’m going to post this link here because there are quite a few women on this site and PMS/PMDD tend to make the usual problems worse.

For example psychological symptoms include:

· Depression
· Anger
· Irritability
· Anxiety
· Sensitivity to rejection
· Sense of feeling overwhelmed
· Social withdrawal

In other words, if you tend to get depressed you might notice your depression getting worse during this period (which is surprisingly long - it can go on for 2 weeks).   Irritable people might notice more irritability.   We’ll feel more anger about feeling rejected and be more sensitive to any kind of rejection.   Culture shock or repatriation will be more overwhelming than ever and we might overdo it in terms of social withdrawal.

Thats actually been a serious issues for me. The interesting thing is, the severity of it changes depending on what country I am in. I think it is the diet.

Cattt: Yes, the diet as well as your stress levels can do that from what I’ve read.

PMS/PMDD symptoms vary due to (1)diet - high (little processed) soy/vegetable diet helps even out hormonal fluctuations - high meat diet makes it worse; (2)sunlight - depending on the season and the country, symptoms will worsen when exposure to sunlight is limited - sun lamps help; (3)exercise - regular moderate to intense exercise over time, will decrease symptoms; (4) Predisposition for depression - treating underlying depression will drastically reduce monthly fluctuations; (5) Body Mass Index (BMI) - if too high or too low, hormonal levels are poorly regulated.

I don’t know the exact reasons for mine, but it always happens, and sometimes it can get very severe. But theres not much I can do on the diet front because I have changed my diet so many times ( my diet changes completely depending on what country I am in). This makes me think theres other main reasons for it.

It’s different for everybody. For me taking a B6 supplement helps - also eating foods high in B6 like chicken and bananas seems to help too.

I use this site to identify foods that have this vitamin and try to use these ingredients when cooking.

I can so relate, I happen to be PMS-ing right now. I eat every 5 minutes and can’t say no to chocolate. Ever! Today after work, I was so beat but I went into a cleaning frenzy that had my hubby looking at me like, oh boy here she goes again. He helped though :) Such a gem.

Do you girls notice that you tend to PMS at around the same time as other girls you may share a house with? Weird but true.
