One Upside of being TCK

I read the post “WHAT STRENGTHS MIGHT TCKs POSSESS AND HOW MIGHT WE DEVELOP THEM” with interest.  One of my favorite things about being TCK is the ability to relate well to people of all ages.  I was often the only child among adults, many of them in their 70’s and 80’s, and I discovered that they were really just old looking young people.  I listened to them and heard stories about life before cars were common, life before air travel and got to know people who had spanned the horse and buggy era to space travel in one lifetime.  Amazing.

Talking to old people, I also discovered that my generation didn’t discover rebellion, sex, drugs, music as a social vehicle or any of the stuff we thought we had the lock on when I was a teen in the 1960’s (think Summer of Love, Beatles, Vietnam war protests, Civil Rights movement, etc.).  Today a friend sent me a youtube link to an old folk singer, Malvina Reynolds, singing “No Hole in My Head”.  If  you watch “Weeds”, she wrote the ”Little Boxes” theme music too.  Tell me what you think.  I think not much has changed…

Everybody thinks my head’s full of nothin,
Wants to put his special stuff in,
Fill the space with candy wrappers,
Keep out sex and revolution,
But there’s no hole in my head.
Too bad.

They call me a dupe of this and the other,
Call me a puppet on a string, they,
They don’t know my head’s full of me
And that I have my own special thing,
And there’s no hole in my head.
Too bad.

I have lived since early childhood
Figuring out what’s going on, I,
I know what hurts, I know what’s easy,
When to stand and when to run,
And there’s no hole in my head.
Too bad.

So please stop shouting in my ear, there’s
Something I want to listen to, there’s
A kind of birdsong up somewhere, there’s
Feet walking the way I mean to go,
And there’s no hole in my head.
Too bad.

Everybody thinks my head’s full of nothin,
Wants to put his special stuff in,
Fill the space with candy wrappers,
Keep out sex and revolution,
But there’s no hole in my head.
Too bad.

Indeed, it’s true that many TCKs are better at dealing with people from other age groups.

That said I’ve noticed that non-TCKs who have older parents are generally better at dealing with older people too, i.e. compare a 25 year old with parents in their 60s versus a 25 year old with parents in their 40s.

i was just talking about age with my fiance today. for some reason it has become common thought that old = tired, conservative, strict, boring and a string of other not so positive adjectives. old people are just people, just like us! i hate it when people say stuff like “she is 60, but young at heart” or “she acts very young for her age”. i mean form the 60+ year olds i have met acting 60+ means being fun loving, vibrant and enjoying a good time, you don’t have to qualify that by saying they are “younger at heart”, why can’t they be 60 at heart? why can’t 60+ be all those wonderful adjectives we use to describe the young?

sorry, my little rant. i think the way youth is idolised and worshipped, especially though pop culture these days is awful! there is nothing wrong with being old, hell it seems pretty sweet. you don’t care what anyone else thinks, you get away with murder cos you’re old, you don’t have to work and your child rearing days are behind you, now all you have to do is sit back and reap the benefits. good times!

so…yeah…uh…about the topic…yeah, tcks relate to old people well…that was the topic, right?

    lol..Warona.

Actually what I find remotely disturbing is 16-19 year olds going on and on about getting ‘old’ and they mean hitting 20. They are going on about this as though they are going to be old and decrepit and running around on wheelchairs….sheesh :p

we TCKs are just better at everything. WOOT.

not reli but I like to believe that…LOL

adults are just…i dunno. just had more time than children did. but like when you are a TCK you realize you don’t need that much time for everything… because if we did need time for everything…we wouldn’t have friends =) (because we usually don’t have friends who we stay with for a long time)
