So I watched the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony last night.  I never really watch opening ceremonies in the past because they tend to be a bit too long and in my opinion not really that interesting.

The only interesting part was the entering of the athletes and the lighting of the torch.

I was thinking about this last night while watching the various different countries of athletes entering the ceremony and wonder how many of us out there get really excited recognizing the countries that we used to live.  What’s more, this time around I actually recognize a lot of countries that I have friends in, I feel some sort of connection with them even though I’ve never been there before.

I definitely cheered for Taiwan (Chinese Taipei - large team!), Thailand, Indonesia and USA.  And I also felt some connection with Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Bahrain, Ghana, Japan, Korea,  Nigeria, Australia, New Zealand, India, Egypt, Iran, Sri-Lanka, France, UAE, most southeast asian countries, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Bahamas and perhaps more that I can’t remember from the top of my head becaues I know someone who is from there, is currently living there or I have a special connection with those countries at some point in my life.

LOL. I do NOT want to see Gordon Brown. Why not take Britain’s most famous icon at present: Gordon Ramsey? I think he could easily satisfy for two hours if he can make an entire series using one word. XD

Sure did. Cracked me the hell up.

Anyhoo, this US-China basketball game is pretty good. At least, up until the 2nd half started. Now it’s just the blowout that everyone expected.

Haha, wow I just read the responses to this, mostly for the opening ceremony and I find it kind of interesting. Interesting because a lot of people in China didn’t really think the opening ceremony had anything to do with the sports event. Even though they liked it however they wish it was more closely related to Olympics than just another Chinese festival.

And honestly speaking, you only get to see that side of China during large events like this. You don’t see the same stuff everyday. Besides the Tai Chi part. Of course I have to give China the credit for trying to protray Chinese culture to the rest of the world and they achieved that but if only they can promote it just as well everyday here in China and not as a tool to show off a part of the Chinese culture that really doesn’t exist any more. There’s a huge lack of interest. And it is more appealing to non-Chinese.

But of course, what does it matter right?

I loved the opening - especially the historical part with period costumes. Its history is a part of China’s legacy that they threw in the trash bin during the cultural revolutions, so I am pleased they focused more on the past than the present.

The actual Olympic events will show how great China is currently anyway. ;)

I thought the fencers were about as frightening as the Olympics could get. I was wrong.

    Very wrong.

Hey MajorTom, are you sure that’s not an early-release shot of the next James Bond villain??? (with experimental Ray-Bans!)

I’m fairly certain that she’s one of the broken robots from “Wall-E” that got left on the cutting room floor.

    But THIS guy

looks like a Bond villain. I mean, look at that outfit! Probably the new Q turned evil or something…

Haha, I was at Cynthia’s house for the opening ceremony. Because I invited myself over. I did a lot of screaming as well. And then I fell asleep. During the ceremony.
