Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was fundraising in San Francisco last week when he said that.  “Desi” is the Urdu and Hindi word for “local.”  He went on to explain that he had had a Pakistani roommate his first year at Occidental College, and that he had many lifelong friendships with Indian and Pakistani immigrants as a result.   He learned to cook various South Asian dishes, and generally described himself as having great affection for people from South Asia.

Hi Annette, I think the article is interesting. It shows that p candidate Obama is very cultured. I think he does a good job breaking down barrier between himself and the people there. His message feels personal.

I like this article much more than the other one you posted several weeks ago because the quotes within the article came from Obama’s mouth rather than someone else telling us what Obama supposedly thinks. People have been complaining they do not know who is and what he is about. This article shows someone who is open to relationships with people beyond the “mono” and like the Republican Party (lol) understands that what are now labelled “minorities” in the USA will be swing-voter blocks in the future so begin building a rapport with them NOW. Interesing stuff!
