(News & Vote) Oprah may finally talk about Military families (Army Brats/TCKs)

Oprah wants to hear your story.

I just heard from my friend Donna Musil, the director of the film BRATS: Our Journey Home, that Oprah may finally be talking about military families — and hopefully, their children – to discuss and share advice on how to cope with repatriation.

Not only am I a TCK, but I am also an adult of a parent that had gone through a camp in WWII. I just wish you all were around when I was growing up. To this day home is where my suitcase is. I am misunderstood a lot. I am a collection of cultures of the War and a collection of cultures of countries. My mother and I learned English together and I was forbidden to speak German. I can home from school one day while living on a base in Germany and someone had spray painted a black swastika on our door.

I think all those options are equally valid and complete each other. This website itself (through reading all the posts, replying, posting my own and getting replies) has been my education and therapy. We've all had such different experiences, yet by sharing them, we can still relate so well to each other, and feel that sense of belonging that has been lacking for so long.

As someone who highly respects but nevertheless gets annoyed a bit about Oprah's relentless energy, sometimes down a path disagreeable to me... As Senlando says, she hasn't covered TCKs yet, and it seems not to have entered her area of interest until Obama propped up, full of political succes.

The most important aspect for anyone though, TCK or not, is learning. People should learn about TCKs not just so that they know who we are, but also that our gifts may be examples to encourage more people to be internationally mobile and culturally flexible. I think we can only benefit from that. Considering her extremely far reach and influence, that's no terrible message.

i'm actually surprised that neither Oprah nor Dr. Phil have done any episodes about TCKs yet (Or at least to my knowledge.) You'd think we'd be an interesting topic, and I'm sure many of us are messed up enough to be on Dr. Phil at least! :-)
