Korea, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, USA and ?

Hello fellow TCKs! It’s nice to meet you all here. I am an adult TCK who is going through a trauma after getting a job. (I know I should be happy with a job, but I am so depressed.) Many people suggest I should stay here with my job till I retire, but that idea sounds so foreign to me; picturing myself living here till I retire just traumatizes me and makes me feel so trapped. I have never settled down in one place before! I am still trying to figure out what to do with my life. Any feedback, advice, etc are welcome.

A little bit about me:

I was born in Korea, grew up in Korea, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia and am now in Illinois, US. I am a business kid. I finished my graduate school in 2005 and have been teaching mathematics (yeah, the universal language which most people hate!) since then.

    hello myst1c!

I know how you feel about staying in one job for the rest of your life… are those people crazy? :D

There’s a thread (you can find the link in our home page), I think it’s called “career crysis and fear of the future”, or something like that.

There’s also a thing called “quarter-life crisis” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter-life_crisis) that might be related. And - surprise! - it’s something that not only TCKs go through, but I beleive it might be more complicated for a person with a TCK experience.
I found a book about this once, and the exploration of the subject is (I think) what led me to find out about TCK.

Anyway, if you want to be more specific about it, you can write a post and we can help you better :)

Since it seems I’m now the (un?)official lolcat spreader, here’s your welcome lolcat picture:

Hi myst1c, I like your screen name. I thought I’d just add a comment since I’m kind of going through a similar experience. I found that it helps when I don’t think of the whole long rest of my life all at once :) i like to take things by 4-6 months at at time, and I tell myself that I’ll see how it goes for that amount of time, and then after that I’ll evaluate how my situation is and if I still want to stay I can, but if I don’t then I can see what my other options are.

So if it helps any, try not to think you’ll be “stuck” in your job for forever, because that’s just too much to worry about! Instead, maybe try telling yourself that you’ll try this for a year, and if at the end of the year you really can’t stay, then if it’s feasible, you can look for something better. It might help you not to feel trapped and to be able to enjoy your surroundings better :)

That’s what I’m doing at the moment, and it does help :) Good luck, and I hope things go well with your job.

Hey, thanks a lot! I will go check them out. Yeah, I think I shouldn’t take the advice people give about settling down in one place forever. That is so not me.

I love the picture! Thanks! =)

Thanks you, Laura! I am about 30 minutes east to St. Louis. Glad to see another TCK in flatland. =) I am still not used to the flatness.

Thank you! That really helps! I will just keep telling myself that I am not stuck here forever but I will be moving to somewhere else soon. That’s what I looked forward to all my life.

    Good luck to you, too.
