Introducing Patricia

Hello Everyone,

SO glad to have stumbled across this site.  I’m Patricia.  I was born in Washington DC to a Nigerian dad and American mom (the diplomat).  When I was six I started my seven year tour of American International Schools.  First stop was Lagos, Nigeria where we spent 4 years, then off to Port-au-Prince, Haiti for two years, and then to Niamey, Niger where I spent my 8th grade year before I returned to the States to attend boarding school in Northern Virginia.  After, high school I attend the University of Virginia and then headed to Conencticut to work for ESPn for seven years.  About a year ago my husband (whose background couldn’t be more different than mine) took a job in the DC metro area and low and behold I’m back in DC and after being overseas since ‘84 my parents are back also.  Being the nomad that I am who knows if DC is the last stop, but it’s good for now.

As far as being a TCK, I will say that none of my siblings, nor I have any regrets to the life we got to experience.  I think it’s my experience that has allowed me to be able to live almost anywhere, hang out with almost anyone, and be a strong correspondant.  I’ve managed to stay in touch with alot of my friends over the last 20+ years and those that I lost touch with, I’ve found on Facebook (ah the benefits of technology).  I wouldn’t trade being a nomad at a young age of for the world.

hello patricia. welcome. nice to have people around here with some age on them. ( i tease, but they call me gramma, and i am 30! maybe its because i call them fetuses)

my next trip is to 9ja! i have never been and really want to go, i have a bunch of friends there and everyone i know who has been then LOVES it!

you say your hubby is different from you? non tck i presume? i am about ti marry a non tck guy, but he loves to travel and is very cool and very open minded (would i be marrying him if he weren’t?)so i am very interested to hear from other married tcks, especially if they married non tck and how that goes.

for the most part, i don’t think it should be that big of a deal, i mean if you marry someone, hopefully it is because you agree on the big things anyway, so doesn’t really matter if they are tck or no? no?

anyway, welcome, see you in the chatroom

Warona, my husband is definitely a nonTCK. He was born, raised, and educted in COnnecticut and has never lived anywhere else until now. Let’s just say he’s a creature of habit and the move to DC has been a bit challenging for him (probably not the right fit). Luckily he does enjoy traveling. His first trip overseas was a few years back when we went to Italy and he got bitten by the travel bug. I hoping that my mom will do one more tour overseas and my husband and I can go visit. Since her specialty is third world countries it would be such a great experience for him. TCK or non, at the end of the day my husband and I are the perfect fit.

by the way, where did you friend live when she was in Africa?
