Introducing… Nick
This post has 232 views
Hi everyone,
I joined a couple of days ago and thought I’d introduce myself…
My name is Nick, I’m 21 years old and a TCK. I was born in Texas (therefore I have an American passport) to a Swiss father (hence a Swiss passport) and an English mother (hence a British passport). I lived in Texas for the first 8 years of my life, then I moved to China for 3 years, then to India for 3 years, then Egypt for 1.5 years. After that my parents moved to Switzerland (to the ‘family home’) and I went to a boarding school in England.
I am now studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering with French in England. Although as part of that, I have to do an internship in a French speaking country, so I’ve spent the last half year living in Belgium. I’m going to see my parents in Switzerland for Christmas, but after that I’m going to live in France to do another internship. I also semi-lived (and worked) in Switzerland last summer.
I’ve spent 4.5 years living in England (one of my ‘home’ countries) and have rarely felt so un-at-home! When I moved to England from Egypt, my Dad’s company gave us very very short notice (three weeks after they told us I was in a boarding school). I was also 16 at the time, hardly the best age to tell me what to do. :P Anyway, I ended up feeling really lost/alone and am slowly getting back on my feet and figuring out what I want to do with my life. Also like many TCKs it seems, I’m most comfortable with other TCKs.
So that’s my life and my issues in a nutshell!

Hey!
Whereabouts in China and when? I lived in Shanghai and Beijing from 1994 to 1998!
P.S. Welcome!

Thanks for all the welcomes!
I’ve been reading around some of the other parts of the site and definitely liked what I’ve seen so far!
Caitlin… how old are you? If you’re my age, we might know each other, which would be, well, weird (finding each other on here I mean). I was in Beijing from ‘94 to ‘97 and I definitely knew a Caitlin, although I’m going to have to take a few minutes to remember if I knew that Caitlin in China or in India. If you were at school back then, were you at ISB?? (The old one on the Lido site…)

Hiya Nick! Welcome to tckid!
So you’re biracial eh? That’s cool, there are a few mixed TCks here (including myself!)
So you live in England now? I lived there for a year and moved to Canada early this year, and it was great at first (I loved how multicultural and vibrant the city is) but it has one of the worst crime rates in the world, so … yeah - I moved!
They say TCKs struggle with “delayed adolescence” so you’re not alone with this problem - at 21 yo, I wasn’t too sure what I was supposed to do! Have you bought the TCK book yet? It has heaps of good advice on this.
Oh we have a tradition to welcome newcomers with a picture, and heres yours:

Hi Brice, thanks for welcome, and the LOLcat! Following on from our brief chat, I’m in England for uni, after that I have every intention of leaving. In fact I should only have another 5 months roughly in England - the rest of the time will be in France and/or Switzerland for internships, projects, etc.
I have read the book before (although I don’t have a copy). I remember it being very interesting, but to read it thoroughly I really need to get my hands on my own copy so that I can read sections that come up in my life, rather than just reading the whole thing through like before (I borrowed it from my university’s library). I think you’re right though, the delayed adolescence thing is a bit of a problem… sadly the maturity from early adolescence doesn’t always stick!

Welcome here…you are not alone in not knowing what you are going to do. I think most of us have this problem and the problem of where to live and where to fit. However I think you will find you fit in well here.
