Intro
Hey all,
I stumbled upon this site while looking at another webpage, and reading the intro page made me feel at home. Wait, where’s home? ;-) I’m from Argentina, and most of my family lives there, but we also lived in Uruguay for eight years. Our background is German; my parents grew up speaking it at home, but then picked up Spanish at elementary school and by the time we came along they almost didn’t use German anymore. I always wondered why my grandparents spoke so funny.
“Home” has been Michigan since 1991, though not consecutively–I went to Hong Kong the 1999-2000 school year. Oh, and my parents and younger brother lived in Montreal my first four years of college. =) Even after all these years here, I still feel like a fish out of water. Coming back from Hong Kong, it took me a good two years to ‘recover’ from the 10 months there. And I have the travel bug. Bad, bad bug.
So that makes me one more normal TCK… glad to find a neat group like this.

Hi and welcome! I lived in Hong Kong for a number of years too (from 1992 to 2000) and it doesn’t surprise me that it took you a while to “recover”. HK is a very addictive place and I think it has a very strong community feel which adds an additional blow to a TCK when arriving “home”. Living in HK was the closest I ever got to feeling at home - it’s just a shame it’s so expensive otherwise I would be back there in a shot!

hey Lici!
I’m in South America too, only in Brazil, but not too far from Argentina! (I’m in the south of Brazil)
Anyway, we have a tradition here, which is to greet newcomers with a cute lolcat picture, so here’s yours:

Thanks for the warm welcome. Love the cat picture. =) I’ve been a little “out of it” the last few weeks, spending almost all my free time studying for an anatomy class that is challenging even the best my neurons had to offer.
We’re on Spring Break now, but I’ve been still studying, working and doing things that were put off for a while. Oh, and preparing to take a week off work to hang out with a friend visiting from Spain. And it’s warming up! Yay!

Gracias, che… so you don’t feel quite at home in Argentina? I have to admit that sometimes I don’t quite get my own people, either. But I have my mate here at work and get a kick out of explaining how it works, how it’s a social thing, like drinking tea in some countries, etc. Even got a couple of coworkers into it. =)
Well, I’m still at work, so I’ll have to continue some other time, but thanks for the welcome. If you ever decide to visit the northern part of the Americas, do let me know. If all goes well, I’ll be in Argentina (Entre Rios) in July for my younger brother’s wedding.

Hey, I lived for four years in Rivera, just a few blocks away from the border with Santana do Livramento. Can’t speak Portuguese anymore, but I do remember some good words, like morango, abacaxi and laranja. At least I wouldn’t go hungry, right?
Where in Canada are you planning to go? Take care of those wrists. I broke an ankle in September and never dreamed it would take this long to get back to normal. And you can’t find replacement parts at the store. =)
