I’m a believer that TCKs are in a position to conquer the globalized world

An interesting email sent to us on the topic of xenophilia and TCKs influence.

“I’m the co-founder and executive director of a group called Global Voices (globalvoicesonline.org), a global citizen media site. Something like half our regular contributors are TCKs - increasingly, I’m a believer that TCKs are in a position to conquer the globalized world. I was hoping to participate/lurk in your community as part of my research on xenophilia - I’m interested in approaches to media and politics that focus on fascination and wonder at the rest of the world rather than fear and distance. It’s my belief that TCKs and other global nomads are natural xenophiles and have a great deal to teach the rest of us about cultural encounter and understanding.

Hope those are sufficient reasons to allow me to participate - if not, as I am not an actual TCK (my first overseas experience came at age 20, when I moved from the US to Ghana), I’ll understand.

Best regards,

-Ethan

    Welcome Ethan!

I also believe that TCKs have more influence than we give ourselves/each other credit for [ugh…bad sentence structure…but I am too tired to fix it].

I don’t know if anyone here has ever looked at the site called American Overseas Schools Historical Society (http://aoshs.wichita.edu/). The site is fascinating when you look at who these TCKs are - and why we know of/about them.

    Welcome Ethan :)

How are we ever going to conquer the world if we don’t interact with non-TCKs who comprise the majority of the world population? ;)

    Hello,

I would actually have to agree with you and am currently in the process of trying to get an NGO going. I feel that doing any sort of extreme overseas work takes someone who really isn’t quite sure what culture shock is anyway. Im 21 and traveled as an MK to over 28 countries before age 17. Im currently trying to find around 4 TCK’s wanting to go into relief work in the places others either cant or wont go. Anyway if your interested in risking your life for others and being part of a small team please send me an email at ifonlytodie@hotmail.com. Be serious if your going to respond because I assure you I am.

    Thanks,

take over the world? that sounds great!

ayako! you slay me! i am still giggling at your response.

yup, there is definitely something to be said about being taught from your surroundings at a very young age that human beings, with all their differences, are pretty much the same. i sometimes wonder how people don’t get it. i mean its not brain surgery!

little tangent. lately i have noticed that there is a distinct xenophobia of america, ESPECIALLY the south, by canadians. now, canadians pride themselve on being open minded, politically correct and generally smart (smarter than the americans of course!) and i have heard quite a few peole talk with disdain about the south and how racisit and generally prejudice it is down there. many of them have never actually been.

now i lived in virginia for 4 years, but that is neither here nor there, what i find intreguing is that these canadians are discriminating against a group of people because they believe that group of people discriminates against people. explain to me please how this works?

i have seen the same thing with americans in southern africa who write off afrikaans people because they associate them with apatheid. they are just people! just human beings trying to get along! and no, you do not get a carte blanche to hate them because you think they were horrible to others. in the end what you are doing is the same as what you are so disgusted at them for doing.

ok, now i am confusing myself. but it reminds me of a quote from austin powers when his dad (michael caine) says:
‘there are only two types of people who i hate in this world; people who are intolerent of other cultures and the dutch!’

    i mean, really….

p.s. josh, what kind of NGO? and where? been looking for places to volunteer next year.

Ethan! i believe in your theory you known!

Alot of politicians are already tcks and quite the example - Obama!

TCK leaders will undertsand more about other countries and cultures other than what their advisers tell.

and plus if we take over the whole nothing will go wrong! because we thrive to perserve what we have! and who’ll be our partner? none other than… - The Airline Industry!

trust me this isn’t the first time i’ve thought of this like Tess over there ^!
I wonder what our first order will be!
but all i know is when it’s time!
i need to talk to someone about some of the countries between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator.
