I reason in English/Mandarin but I “feel” in Spanish

I realize that this is not strange at all!

I AM a trilingual

Now, I do reason, analyze, and express myself more in English and Mandarin (sometimes I use Spanish as well, I do, but maybe just not as much as the former two mentioned above)

But I ACTUALLY “FEEL” more in Spanish!

I feel safer and have more “at home” feeling while listening to Spanish music.

My history is like this, I had lived in Latin America for 12 entire years. My family speak Mandarin. But I studied in an American School since eighth grade. In class, I use English. We learned everything from school in English, we learned to do research with English, we debated at school in English, and I complained with teachers in English… So all da reasoning part, I tend to use English.

Oh! I reason with my parents too! And da ppl from “my own” country all use Mandarin. So I do explain myself in Mandarin as well.

However, Spanish was the language in which my maids used with me… and da ppl on the streets (salers, etc.) talked with me those 12 yrs in my developmental yrs.

I feel more like “home” in those Latin American countries, and I heard Spanish music everywhere while lived there. So now I am a young adult now, back to my parents country, I still “feel” in Spanish and only Spanish music will make me feel “at home”

(More homey, I mean. Like da songs from my homeland sort of feeling)

    Same as me XD!

My academic vocabulary at a lower level is in Spanish
    middle level in Chinese
and high level in English JAJA!!!!

But I trully FEEL in Spanish

I "feel" God is a good God and more trustworthy if I hear preachings in Spanish! Then English, lastly Chinese!

I "feel" God is a extra-strict Man if I hear preachers in Chinese!

And I will only feel homey and cry by listening to Spanish song!!!!!!!!!!! Also remembering Latin American ppl talking to me in Spanish! However, I can only analyze and explain things in English or Chinese!

In short, I'm more sentimental (childlike) in Spanish

I can understand what you're saying. I grew up speaking English at home and Japanese at church and school, but then went to the last few years of high school and all of university in English, so a lot of my higher academic vocabulary is only English, and my "heart language" is Japanese. The wierd thing for me that I've noticed lately (now that I'm teaching elementary school in English) is that a lot of my academic vocabulary at a lower level is in Japanese! So I guess I'm mixed up :)

    Hi Zoe!
I definitely understand what you mean.. except I don't think I feel in either language. My family speaks Mandarin as well, and I've either gone to school in Canada, or went to an international school in Taiwan where everything was taught in English. And now I am in the US, and my only mandarin practice comes when my parents call me. I have a more difficult time reasoning in Mandarin when I go back to Taiwan on my yearly visit, but get better the longer I stay there. Then when I come back from there, I have a hard time reasoning in English! Well, maybe i feel in both languages, but usually only when i am in the country, i guess! I really wish I were tri-lingual though, I've been trying to learn Spanish again, but lack a practice-buddy so the progress is slow!
You know, I have always been really interested in Latin American countries and hope to live in one one day, and I would be really interested in talking to you a little bit more about your experiences living there. If you could send me an email at alicehoe at gmail dot com that would be be awesome!!
