As a currently small community, and the lack of resources available at a given time, it is quite difficult to get any information in regards to TCK/Global Nomads. I am interested in finding out how each of us discovered our TCKness :)

How did you discover you’re a TCK?

I found out about Global Nomads back in 1995 or 6. I taught in the social science field and something tweaked my interest while researching. I was wide-eyed with amazement at what I read and learned and immediately joined the Washington D.C. based group, headed by Norma McCaig. The organization sent me a packet with articles and a bibliography. I consumed all the info as quickly as I could and it lit a little fire in my heart, thinking that there were others like me.

It was the old DOS Internet back then and not convenient or visually appealing like now. From the bib, I found out about a book: “The Absentee American: Repatriates’ Perspectives on America and its Place in the Contemporary World Book” by Carolyn D. Smith; 1991. I special ordered it and read it from cover-to-cover immediately. The writing was so so, but I liked the gist. From its bib, I was able to find more articles and books.

The only problem was that I never connected with anyone regarding it in person or e-mail, so even though I had all this terrific info, I felt disconnected from the ‘movement’. I wanted to start a Global Nomads chapter at the post sec institution at which I taught, but my life took a different direction and I decided to work with international students (because I liked them better, truth be told!) and I left and began a new career.

I am so glad I learned about it then, but the thirst was never quenched, nor flames fanned till I ran into the new TCK movement and I’m thrilled.

I was in visiting family in Denmark in May of 1999, and my cousin had a newspaper from January with a travel article that he wanted to show me. Inside the travel section was an article of far more interest to me - a very long and thorough article about repatriation.

There was a great description of the hidden immigrant feeling among repatriated children, and the phrase “Third Culture Kids.” I was elated and crying at the same time. No one could understand what I was babbling about and why I was both happy and crying.

I kept saying “this is ME, this is ME, this is ME.” But my need for identity and the first glimmer of finding it went right over their collective heads. I still have the newspaper article. It was 5 plus more years before I saw the Third Culture Kids book, which I had not known existed, and ordered it. The rest is history.

What I have been missing is the connection to other TCKs and a place to “talk” about my discoveries and feelings. I’m finding that here…and so much more.

I found this site through Facebook only a few days before the first teleclass. Those classes have been a God send for me. Healing, empowering, validating, affirming. Much has fallen into place with the TCK label and all that lies behind it.

Ruth Van Reken told me I was a TCK when I was about 12. I knew what I was but I didn’t have the vocabulary for it. I think that I remember resisting it. When I was talking to her I think I was shying away from the conversation, thinking “shh don’t tell anyone, I’ve almost completely assimilated now” haha. Kids. I’m really glad that I talked to her and got to know her and my situation a little better, I don’t think I would be so collected today if I hadn’t discussed it with her then.
