Hi all,

I just discovered the forum and I am happy to meet other TCK’s.. I was born in Estonia and moved to Switzerland at the age of 11.. After the cold war, my father went to Moscow (he was in the diplomatic corpse) and my mother married to a Swiss.

I wouldn’t have had any choice of staying in Estonia anyway and I moved to Switzerland and at the age of 13, my father died in Moscow (which was one of the biggest losses and still is in my life as I am a father’s daughter, not my mothers)

Ever since, I have been trying twice to move back to my ‘home’ country but came back each time.. Last time in Estonia, I suffered a massive depression which took me about 1.5 years to recover from. After leaving Estonia, I travelled through Asia for a few months, before coming back to Switzerland. Which made the depression even worse as everyone you meet when travelling asks you first “Where do you come from”…

Back then I didn’t know about TCK’s and their problems.. In Estonia is all the rest of my family but I just don’t feel capable to master my life there. But I am already thinking of moving on to other countries (might not right now, but as soon my ongoing studies allow it, I will be open for moving on to another country :) In both countries, I am regarded as a native, as I speak perfectly Swiss German and Estonian.. But it seems that I don’t feel as a native anywhere..

    Hello and welcome to TCKid!

I’m “from” Finland, and I speak Finnish fluently. I know Estonian is close to Finnish, so that’s exciting!! : )

I’ve struggled with depression too (the worst being when I lived in Finland for a year in high school), and it’s totally ok to have gone through that.

    *hugs* Welcome!

    Grüezi!

I’m living in Switzerland right now, in Wetzikon, Zürich.

I went through depression too when I was in the US for a couple of years in university. It got to a point that getting away and ending up studying in Switzerland instead was probably the best choice of my life, and I haven’t really regretted it since. For me, being out of the US was entirely refreshing.

Anyway, welcome to the site! Let me know where you are in Switzerland!

    a-net,
I feel your pain. It is difficult to face family issues while not having a firm security in one root. I wish to get to know you better. Here’s my warm welcome for you.
