I’m Heidi and I’m an adult TCK. I’m also multicultural. I born in Malaysia and moved to the USA when I was 11. My father is Swiss-American and is also a TCK, having been born in Venezuela (to Swiss parents) and grown up both in Venezuela and the USA. My mother is Iban (a large ethnic minority in Malaysia) from the island of Borneo and she grew up crossing cultures, hers and the Malaysian mainstream culture. I have dual citizenship with Switzerland and the USA, but have not lived in Switzerland…yet.
I first realized I was a TCK (or Global Nomad) at college, when I had the privelege of meeting Norma McCaig, founder of Global Nomads International. Unlike many TCKs, I’m not in a field that involves people and culture. I’m a re-entry (that means I’m over 30 and worked for a while) PhD student in Earth Science, studying climate and climate change (I guess that means the entire world is my laboratory!) I also write fiction and poetry (not yet published). But my background is really in everything I do.
