Has growing up a TCK made your more fashion conscious?
This post has 243 views
Slightly random but I noticed TCK’s like me who have lived in the Middle East tend to be more fashionable than a lot of people in our “home country”. Is the case with anyone else?
What do you think of this post?

I would say that being a TCK has made me more fashion paranoid than anything.
In US high school, I was the one with the punked out hair (hey, it was the 80s), and always wore my make up just so, and made sure my clothes were the right brand (I was an MK in the suburbs of Chicago, and we had a “missionary barrel” that took donations, but had fashionable clothes donated from major companies).
When I went to Germany after I graduated high school, all the fashion rules were different. I was pegging my pants (cinching and rolling up) in the US, and one of my MK friends was like, “Uh, you probably want to let those out, you look kinda wierd for around here.”
After that I was constantly worried I was going to look goofy. So…although I long to look fashionable, and every now and then, pull it off successfully, I have neither time nor money to follow trends too closely (two kids and full-time teaching).

i think being tck made me fashiuon unconscious ahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahaha!!!!
i don’t know if anyone can say one country is more fashionable than the next, but what is considered stylish is different from place to place. i found that i never really liked anything that was happening in the places i was living ans made up my own thing. still do. its not THAT out there, but i rarely look like the folks living in the place i live.
did that make any sense?

There is a timeless fashion sense that can never go out of style. A good leather coat and good leather knee-high boots never go out of style. A good pair of sweats (preferably with gold zippers from Adidas
never goes out for casual wear. The only thing that really changes each year in fashion is fabrics, color tones, cuts and the odd piece that is time-identified.
I predate trends usually by a few years so I feel no need to follow them. Got that swagger, ya heard.
Go on Omar, brush the dirt off my shoulders, bro. And please, if you know of any liberal Lebs with swagger, integrity and razor sharp wit with some sense of style and sensual features can you hook up a woman up? Because I love my “Ethnic” brothas!!!
lmao

I happen to like a classic look (those basic items and lines that never go out of style), which is fortunate, since I really don’t like shopping. I like to look good and sometimes spend quite some time coordinating an outfit, but I don’t care too much about the latest fashion, whatever it might be. That’s nice because it happens to work well for my lifestyle.
Funny story: Recently my brother and I took a bus from central Mexico to South Texas. It was a Sunday morning when we were sitting outside the bus station, waiting to be picked up. At first I felt really self-conscious, because we had travelled all night and slept in our clothes. But as I looked around and saw everyone else — even just the people walking by — I realized that we were better dressed than anyone else. Our clothing matched and it fit, and our pants weren’t falling down. Our clothes weren’t any more wrinkled than anyone else’s, and my hair was combed. All my self-consciousness went away!

Personally I buy stuff that stays the same all the time. Like trench coats in winter, flare jeans and that kind of thing. Fashion in Australia changes ALL THE TIME (they like to imitate American pop culture) so I am having the hardest time ever looking for clothes here. In KL, it’s more classy, but even then, it’s quite hard to find something that doesn’t look too cheap. But yeah, when I find something classy, I’ll buy it because then, it doesn’t matter where in the world I am, it’ll still be accepted! =)
