So what do you guys have as your future plans? In the past 4 years I have averaged one country per year, so that means I have very few friends and spend most of my time alone. Kinda sad, looking at people going out and having fun and you being stuck at home… I finished school a year ago, had a hard time finding a job, but now i have been working for about 6 months now. I absolutely hate my job. At least it lets me be social, cauz I talk a lot with my co-workers, but otherwise it’s boring. I spend most of my free time surfing places on the internet I wanna visit. I have decided that I hate work. What I wanna do is work for a few years, then save up some money and then move to some place for a year and live off of my savings, doing travelling and stuff. In like 4 years I would like to spend some time in Thailand, cauz it’s cheap and sounds fun. Also travelling around Peru for a few months sounds like fun. Heck, I wanna visit all the countries in the world… What are your plans for the future?

    Hi Peter,

What do you do for work? I think it’s totally respectable to hate work, but I’m sure there’s something out there you like to do, even if it isn’t very well paid :)

I know how you feel about being alone- I have lived in 5 different places over the last 10 years, and my best friends are everywhere but here. Sometimes I just want to be like all those people that have never moved and have their lifetime friends only a block away. But you know what? I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly compare your life to that of others. Your life situation has been different, period. Also, it’s probably better to not think too much about finding happiness or “fitting in”, because I think that only makes you more miserable. I’m not one to give advice because I analyze my life and my degree of satisfaction just about every hour, but I KNOW that’s not how it should be, and I’m doing my best to change it. It’s probably better to just take one day at a time and try to open up and talk to people, even if it’s hard (trust me, I know). I think it’s important for us to keep in mind that we have to deal with some issues that monocultural people do not, so as to not be too harsh on ourselves. That said, there’s always room for self-improvement. Sooo…back to you original question.

I have a year left of school, and I’m not 100% sure what I’ll do afterwards. I don’t really feel completely at home where I am now, but my family’s here and I do have some friends here, even though we don’t see much of each other for different reasons. I guess I could risk it all and leave, or sort of try to make do with this sort of “half life” I have here. I’ve been thinking of heading off to China after school’s done…I’ve never been to Asia, and I hear you can take Chinese there for very little money. So maybe I’ll do that :)

Well I think your happiness depends on what you are doing. You should probably think about how your professional goals can fuel your travel goals because my concern is what you will do after that money runs out. Its clique but do what you love.

To answer your question, one of the best things that my parents ever made me do was create a yearly plan for my life. As time went on I decided to expand it to a 4 and 5 year plan. The fact that it will probably not happen to plan, especially if you move so much but if you can write a plan of what you would like to happen, it might help you clarify what you are seeking in a career and in your travels.

I am not the one to give advice because I am still in school and haven’t started a young adult life of full-time jobs. But I am planning to get into an international business field once I am out of college. If possible, maybe work for a multinational corporation?
So far, career plans aren’t entirely finalized as though floating in the mist of clouds.

I think Elizabeth makes a good point, though. Making plans ahead of time. I think what’s important here is use the plans to guide you, not to finalize your life you know ;)
