Food adventure (TCK Cooking)

I think one advantage of being a TCK is our ability to eat ANYTHING. Just like that goat dung and insect post :D (See I’m eating lunch and it didn’t even gross me out LOL)

So anyways I am just wondering if you have experienced a lot with cooking (that is if you cook). So a typical Japanese curry (or any curry) uses potato, carrots and onions right? Well I don’t have any potato so I decided to experiment. I added green peppers, carrot, onion and bak choy with pork and chicken mixed into it. I remembered I added green peppers once and my roommate (who is also a TCK) thought that was interesting. Well Indian curry adds other stuff in there so why not? And it turned out pretty good!

I always do ingredient substitution because there is just no way I can get every ingredient all the time. My American friend sometimes complain I experiment too much, as long as it doesn’t kill me XD But she does agree some of them are good! So what cuisine am I good in? Well, just like me, I really have no idea.

cooking is all about experimentation man! growing up in ethiopia, things were expensive, so when we wanted luxuries like cake and ice cream, my parents would tell us t make them. so i have been experimenting with baking and cooking since i was a tot.

like the other day i was trying to make mashed potatoes, it turned into potato soup. my curries are different every time! i like just throwing things into a pot and seeing what happens. i think once you know the rules of cooking the point is to experiment. i look up recipes and have books, but its usually for ideas as opposed to getting an actual recipe.

and right now i am broke, so substitution is KEY!

I always experiment with cooking…I love to try different things and see what happens. I usually do a recipie the way it says the first time though to see what it is like then change it later or just start throwing in things to see what comes of it. I like to pick a country for a meal and then plan everything around it too. The internet is a great place to find recipes to try.

I’d like to encourage TCKs who like cooking to participate in Paper Chef which is hosted by one of my favorite food bloggers Ilva of Lucullian Delights:

I’ll do my best to participate in the next round too - I had to withdraw last round because I couldn’t find buckwheat flour.
