First TCK Comic Ever

I’m a fan of comics. I’ve been looking everywhere for some third culture kids comic strips, but unfortunately there aren’t any… so I took the matter into my own hands and created the very first TCK comic.

The first comic is obviously on the question “where are you from”. Aren’t you tired of having to explain yourself all the time?!

  • For a while I was creating the "Small World" comic strip that used to appear in Among Worlds magazine... haven't kept it up, though. I'll revisit it when life's not quite so hectic! It's certainly a ripe topic for some good humor, though.

Yup - that's about how it is! Encountered that just a few days ago - I'm 49 and still don't know what to say.
  • Maybe this will help, Anita.

15 ways to answer the question: "Where are you from?"

LOL WARONA! hhahah "King of Africa". This reminds me of a girl from highschool who also claimed she was a princess from Africa, because it was a small village and her father was the king. Was it you??

uhm, i graduated college in 2000, so it was just a few years ago. yeah, it was the weirdest thing, i would tell story upon story, show pictures of my parents house, my sister's first car, talk about road trips, flying to and from high school, you name it; i told the story (i am a talky chick).

and yet, after 3 years they were pulling me to the side to say "now that we are friends, can i ask you some questions about africa..." i didn't know whether to be really offended or really sad.

my first year of college i told a bunch of people my dad was the king of all of africa. basically what happened was i was joking saying i was a princess, so someone was like, whoa! your dad is the king? and i was like "yeah" and someone asked "of where?" and so, as what i thought was the punchline, i answered "of africa" (as in that is impossible so i must be joking) and walked off.

i had no idea what i had done. all through my 4 years of college i had people coming up to me, pissed going "i just found out that your dad isn't really the king of africa! is that true??!!"

i kept thinking, if he were the king of the ENTIRE continent, if that were actually possible, don't you think you'd have heard of him? but oh well...

    lol that's pretty funny Warona..
I love those unintentional situations. lol, they still asked you if you had cars in Africa? haha
    how long ago was this??
  • warona
the best part is my dad is one of those guys who is never intentionally funny. he just sort of does stuff and tells stories very matter of factly. which usually adds to the hilarity in my opinion.

    so yea, pretty funny.

don't know if any of them found out, i would say their kids may have told them, but these are the same people who after knowing me for 4 years, hearing dozens of stories about africa, my childhood and just general warona-natter, would still ask if we had cars in africa. so maybe not..

aw, i miss my american buddies. let me not take the piss too much
  • Brice
Warona: hahaaha! I wish I could hear this story being told, it sounds like a something straight out of Russel Peters. Your dad is a fun guy.

I wonder if those Americans ever found out he actually lived there before?
  • warona
    hhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! that is hilarious!

this reminds me of a story. my parents lived in the states for 4 years before i was born. my dad then went on to work for the UN and other organisations where he was traveling a lot. he has been to dozens of african, asian, european countries and traveled to the states A LOT. not just for work but me and my 3 siblings went to college there not to mention my parents have lots of friends there.

AAAAAAAAAAAANYWAYS, when my parents came for my graduation, all my friends' parents kept asking my dad if it was his first time in the states. he kept telling them no and explaining. he said they all looked so disappointed to hear it wasn't his first time that he started answering "yes, it is my first time" and let them delight in asking him how he liked it etc. i always laugh when he tells this story.

it is a little sad though...

That's funny lol but also kind of sad at the same time, that the TCK has to pretend.
