“I still find it interesting when I discover famous people/popular artists that are TCKs as well (because there aren’t that many).”

“I am sure there are several [famous TCKs] and they seem to be settling quite well returning to their home countries, but I’m not sure I can do that myself. I wonder how they felt.”

    Another note,

Another personal favorite musician third culture kid of mine is Lila Downs...as an anthropologist I lived and did fieldwork in the town she's from on her mother's side...and besides her music is awesome!

Lila Downs (born 1968 in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca) is a Mexican singer. She performs her own compositions as well as tapping into native Mesoamerican music of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl cultures. Here's a Wikipedia entry on her!

Downs is the daughter of Mixtec cabaret singer Anita Sánchez and Allen Downs, a Scottish/English-American[1] professor of art and cinematographer from Minnesota. She grew up partly in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, partly in the U.S. state of California as a teen, and Minnesota as an adult where she graduated from the University of Minnesota in voice and anthropology

    Hey guys,

And, of course, don't forget Timothy Geithner, newly-appointed Treasury Secretary, who grew up in India and Thailand, among other places...
  • Alexander Pushkin was half Ethiopian, half Russian.

Napoleon Bonaparte was originally Italian. (Apparently his French classmates made fun of him for it... which may explain things a bit.)
  • Aris
George Papandreou (and all his siblings), leader of the Greek Socialist party P.A.S.O.K. (U.S.A., Canada, Sweden, Greece)
  • Kari, I loved that line, too. I was a missionary kid in Tanzania and I KNOW THAT SONG!!!

Another one for the celebrity list: Ariel Dorfman, writer and political activist (Argentina, Chile, New York City).
  • Kari
I noticed my brother (Greg Mortenson) is listed in this forum. This is one of my favorite lines from his book, "The tune was too ingrained for Mortenson to consider the novelty of this moment-an American, lost in Pakistan, singing a German hymn in Swahili." Do you recognize the TCK? lol!
  • DBJR
Please don't take this as a snobbish post!

I went to school with the Jordanian royal family in England Pryscilla... I didn't know Abdullah personally but did know the crown prince Hamza and cousin Rashid who were very much trying to find their ID's as kids... I found myself identifying with them quite strongly as (superficially) a fish out of water.

I have no doubts that even as (supposedly) direct descendants of Muhammad, their personalities have been shaped strongly by their TCK experiences.
  • Another one! Lisa Ono, a Japanese bossa nova artist who grew up between Japan and Brazil :) And she's coming to Shanghai! I'm really excited!
  • cami
Photographer Annie Leibovitz was an army brat and discovered photography as a teenager living in the Philippines. She spent time in Israel too.

Lennox Lewis - former boxing heavyweight champion of the world.

He was born in England, then moved to Ontario, Canada when he was 13. He won the Gold medal in boxing for Canada in I believe was the '88 Seoul Olympics (could be wrong about which Olympics it was, not about his Gold for Canada), then when Canada didn't give him a decent shot at pro boxing, he took up an offer in England and went back to England and subsequently became one of the greatest boxers ever.

He never felt comfortable being considered "British" since he spent so many of his formative years in Canada, and after being repeatedly pestered about his nationality, finally settled on calling himself Jamaican (his parents nationality).

Don King spoke about this, saying that his indeciseveness about where he came from was "uninspiring" since England or Canada fans couldn't really say he represented either country.

I'm not a boxing fan btw, just was naturally interested in Lewis's story, since it is very similar to my own.
  • PRYSCILLA
King Abdullah II, of Jordan. He was born ins Jordan but raised in England and USA. I remember to had read that he speaks arabic with an english accent. :-)

"Modern day members of the Tokugawa clan—the xenophobic dynasty of Shoguns that shut Japan off from the world for centuries—are up in arms because the man set to one day become head of the family has married a non-Japanese. Iehiro Tokugawa, who is poised to one day become the 19th head of the clan that ruled the country as Shoguns from 1603 to 1868 and maintained a rigid ban on foreigners entering Japan, has tied the knot with a Vietnamese woman."

    And he's a TCK :p

His autobiography "Out of Place" deals with growing up internationally, losing his cultural homeland of Palestine, growing up as an American in the Middle East, being a "native" in British colonial society, and growing up Arab in America.
  • In interviews with major American newspapers and in The God Journey podcasts, Young has spoken frankly about his difficult years as a child of Canadian missionaries, living in the highlands of New Guinea with the Dani tribe until he was 10 years old (he calls himself a "third culture kid").

In The New York Times article, The Shack, a Christian novel, becomes a surprise best seller (June 24, 2008), Young also said that he spent a decade in therapy after an extramarital affair 15 years ago.

Awesome.. I didn't know Angela Kinsey was a TCK? I love The Office!
  • omar
In a way T.E. Lawrence was a TCK. Though born and raised in the UK he developed the common TCK syndromes. Such as not sure who he was really loyal to, saw the world with different eyes than others, spoke a second language (Arabic) and never really fit in back in his native country. A true TCK!
  • priyanka
JOE STRUMMER. of course he was a TCK, he was much too awesome to be anything else. i'm only half joking =D
  • Cynthia
Hahaha! Yes that's right! :D I didn't bother to get the facts straight yesterday coz I just got off the plane LOL

  • Jr_Yachtie
The King was born in Massachussets and moved to Switzerland when he was around 3 or so I think. His bro and sis were born in thailand. He was educated there and moved back when his brother, Rama VIII died .
    =D
  • Cynthia
I realized that the current King of Thailand is also a TCK. I mean I knew about his history but I never made the connection LOL I think him and his older sister and brother were born and raised in Switzerland. And later returned to become King of Thailand. Actually many members of the past royal families of Thailand were TCKs as well.

Also I found out that Angela Kinsey (played "Angela" in the US version of The Office) is also a TCK! This is quoted from her bio on NBC.com

"Originally from Texas, Kinsey grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, and still speaks the language."

Is that cool or what?? They actually had pictures of her when she was a kid in Indonesia...
  • George Orwell, of 1984 fame, was a TCK too. His father was stationed in India for a while where he lived for a few years until he moved back to England with his mother and siblings. I think he still played with multi-cultural kids in England, but it's been a while since I wrote that research paper on him in high school. ^^;
  • Cynthia
    It appears so! lol

Maybe that's where Aragorn growing up with elves and becoming an 'elvish' human came from :)

I'd say at three he wouldn't have had any problems adjusting to British society at all, but one can have vague memories of when was three years old of time spent in a very different world.

Julio Cortázarwas (intellectual and author of experimental novels and short stories) was born to his Argentinian parents on August 26, 1914, in Brussels, Belgium, where his father was involved in a commercial venture as part of Argentina's diplomatic presence. Many years later, Cortázar would say "my birth was a product of tourism and diplomacy."

Because the Cortázar family were nationals of a neutral country not involved in World War I, they were able to pass through Switzerland and later reach Barcelona, where they lived for a year and a half. Cortázar regularly played at the Park Güell and its colourful ceramics would remain vivid in his memory for many years.[citation needed]

When Cortázar was four years old, his family returned to Argentina. He spent the rest of his childhood in Banfield, near Buenos Aires, together with his mother and his only sister, who was one year his junior

You know that it's only last month that I suddenly realized that that move to Egypt and back again made Jesus a TCK? (I'd been told before that that move from Heaven to earth made him a TCK, but I never really bought it. It must have been quite the culture change, but it's not the same as living in and absorbing more than one culture during your childhood.)

The singer Roger Whittaker is also a TCK. He was British and born in Nairobi.
