Exciting News to Share!

Hi, my (A)TCK friends!

I just received news of an honor regarding my story “He Sees”, which was published in 2003 in Chicken Soup for the Christian Teenage Soul (even though I was 32 at the time). My story is being included in their “101 Best” series, “representing our favorites from our library of stories”! :)

I bring this to your attention not just because I’m excited to have my story included in the new book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christian Teen Talk. “He Sees” is a story about an experience I had in college that relates to my TCK lifestyle…if any of you have ever felt isolated (and who of us hasn’t?), I believe this story will encourage you, no matter what your faith.

I also want to encourage you to write about your TCK experiences and SEND THEM OUT! “He Sees” was the very first story I felt brave enough to send in…and having it published has helped me gain confidence in my writing ability and know that the TCK perspective needs to be heard!

Thank you, Sindhu! :) You will published...just keep at it!

I know (at least at for now) I enjoy writing personal essay/nonfiction. Sometimes I type that genre along with "contest" or "submissions", and tons of opportunities show up in the results. You should try to do that with whatever genre you feel the most confident-go for it! :)
  • Congratulations, Kristina! :)

I used to love reading the Chicken Soup books. They had some amazing stories in there. I would love to get something published at some point too.

Yay! :) Maybe during Christmas break I'll make a more concentrated focus of that! Things are a bit hectic now with trying to make my 6th grade students hand in their work before Christmas break-good luck with that, right?! :) haha.

You're right-there is more of a "platform" (way to market writing) now with the TCK website and more exposure in the media, etc. than there was back in 2003/04 when I was considering the topic...thankfully, my "pack-rat-ness" will pay off, because I've saved what I started on back then on my school computer! :)

    I'll keep you guys posted!
  • Kristina, wow that is awesome! Yes I think it's a good idea to continue pursuing it and now that we have so many people and a lot of interesting collections of stories on here, with the permission of the authors I think you'll be well on your way and ti'll take less time :) And if you need help you've got a whole bunch of us :D

    Thank you, Cynthia! :)

A while ago, I started writing a proposal for that for the Chicken Soup people for missionary kids/tcks, but got sidetracked and didn't pursue it. It's a long drawn out process (like 10 pages worth of collecting samples, talking about time dedication, and marketing options/platform, etc), and I got overwhelmed!

However, that was before tckid.com! Maybe now the time is right, and I should look into that again...hmm...
  • Congratulations Kristina! I love the Chicken Soups :)

Hmm, maybe they should publish a Chicken Soup for the TCK Soul :D That would be totally awesome. I know it will be therapeutic for me :)
  • Wow! As a wannabe writer, all I can say is 'Congratulations!'.

@miyon, I second Kristina's advice. In addition, sometimes attending a once-off writing seminar for newbies, or (if time permits!) taking a short writing course can provide a safe structure in which to produce some writing - gaining, hopefully, some constructive critiques along the way.

    Thank you, Miyon! :)

You should definitely share your writing! Maybe even with one of your professors, or get tips from the creative writing teacher at your college. Set up a meeting with one of the people in a mentoring role and get ideas of how to share with others.

When I wrote my story initially, I finished writing a draft and then took it to my coworker (an language arts/English teacher) and asked her to critique it. And then asked about 10 more people to tell me what they thought. I took what they said under advisement, changed a few things, got rid of others, etc.

You're at a great university (I'm from IL, technically- ;) )- use the resources while you're there! And good luck in future writing! :)
  • Aww.. Kristina This is a wonderful news! I am truly happy for you. I like writing but I sometimes don't find myself brave enough to share my writing with someone else. Thank you for the encouragements.
