Daoism

I am taking a world relgions class this quarter. Right now we are learning about Daoism and I found this really great story that relates well to the life of a TCK. It is a story from Zhuangzi a Daoist sage. Thought I would share :)

‘Three in the Morning”

Whether you point to a little stalk or a great pillar, a leper of the beautiful Hsi-shih, things ribald and shaky or things grotesque and strange, the Way makes them all into one….Only the man of far-reaching vision knows how to make them into one. So he has no use [for categories], but relegates all to the constant. The constant is the useful; the useful is the passable; the passable is the successful; and with success, all is accomplished. He relies upon this alone, relies upon it and does not know he is doing so. This is called the Way.

But to wear out your brain trying to make things into one without realizing that they are all the same – this is called “three in the morning.” What do I mean by “three in the morning”?

When the monkey trainer was handing out acorns, he said, “You get three in the morning and four at night.” This made all the monkeys furious. “Well, then,” he said, “you get four in the morning and three at night.” The monkeys were all delighted. There was no change in the reality behind the words, yet the monkeys responded with joy and anger. Let them, if they want to. So the sage harmonizes with both right and wrong and rests in Heaven the Equalizer.

I love Winnie the Pooh's Daoism!!

Doaism is Chinese in case you don't know get XD!!!~~~yyy

It is WAY better than Confusian! (which I HATE)

However, Daoism is just a philosophy, I like it (Since elemtary still now!!)

However, I believe that Christianity has more wisdom than that even...

However, I am in great confusion, crisis, and chaos with it recently ="=+++
  • The Tao is "the way" - the natural flow of life.

Love the Tao...Tao rocks my world! All is one and one is all...

    :)
  • Yeah, sometimes the connections I make to TCK life are pretty tenuous, but ...

'So he has no use [for categories], but relegates all to the constant. He relies upon this alone, relies upon it and does not know he is doing so. This is called the Way.'

In our global life we rely less on categories in terms of who we are and where we come from because we understand what is important about who a person is (which doesn't include a persons address). I just liked the way it related our struggles just to relate to people as people rather than categories of people (in an ideal world of course).

The story of the monkeys I see as relating to our struggle when we repatriate to our 'home' countries. We have no home and so people at 'home' struggle to categorize us, often getting angry and confused (as we also do in fighting this reaction) and yet the stupid thing is we all come from the same place in essence 'the earth', so it's all the same no matter how you look at it.

Therefore, if we want to rest in Heaven the equalizer the best thing we can do is not see our differences as so different when in essence we are all the same, it's just the way you look at it.

Anyway, it made sense in my brain, so I figured it might make sense in someone else's and make them smile.
  • I honestly didn't understand the implication of how this relates to TCK life. Could someone elaborate for me so I can understand better?
  • In a sense, I get what this post is saying. very interesting though!
Although what would you say the acrosn represented? =P
