Ciao! My name is Vale and I am a tck from Milan, Italy, and Seattle, USA. I have lived in Italy for a total of 12 years and in Seattle for 5, though I moved back and forth a few times. I moved to Seattle for the first time when I was ten and after a few months of adjustment I felt at home, I was still “the Italian girl” of course but I had quite a few friends. Then after middle school I moved back to Italy and I started going to a British school which I absolutely hated, it had all the characteristics of an international school save the students who were mostly Italian and had never lived abroad. I stayed there for two years and kept wishing that we would move back to the US. I moved back to Seattle for my junior -which actually turned out to be my last - year of high school. I had kept in touch with my friends here and I was able to go to the same school as them, the only problem was that I had changed quite significantly and they hadn’t and so I was a bit lost, I had always considered this my home and now I realized that it really wasn’t anymore. To make things worse I had to take American Studies which was about as monocultural as it can get, we essentially studied the whole year what it means to be an American. Fortunately, I was able to graduate early and I am now a freshman at the University of Washington in Seattle, where there are quite a few tcks so I’m not as lonely as I was in the past few years, and there are a lot of study abroad opportunities to keep me from feeling too restless :D.

One of the things that I love the most about being a tck is being able to speak (and most importantly think) in more than one language. It allows me to step back and separate myself from what is going on around me and thus be much more analytical (and critical ;D) which can always be useful (and fun!) when studying.

So yeah, there’s my story. It’s so nice to have a place where I can talk to people who have been through similar experiences!

It does give you a broad perspective on things. :)

Hi! Yeah, I do like panettone, though I prefer pandoro (which is quite similar), especially with a lot of crema pasticcera =D.
Haha, I always get confused with spelling, especially with the British and American, I always have to cross out a lot of u when I write my papers

Welcome to TCKid.com Vale! :) I’m glad you find this place very comfortable to be in :D

So what are you currently studying in college? It is always interesting to see what other TCKs are studying and see if the choice stems from the fact that they are TCKs or just what they are interested in :D

    Hi Vale :)

Going back to a place you thought was home and realizing it isn’t anymore is always harsh. I’m sure I won’t feel so at home anymore should I go back to the US (like I did when I was 15).

I feel that not only have I changed - I feel Americans have changed too. Younger Americans aren’t like the Americans from the 60s!
