Hey, since we’ve all travelled all over the world, I was thinking I’m sure some of us have some funny or interesting stories. Let’s hear yours! Personally I have probably a millon airport/flying stories, and I hear so many from other expats.

Here’s one of the recent ones someone told me on airport security! It’s so ridiculous it’s hard to believe:

“”Sir can you please unlock your bag and put it on the table?”

I do it..

Security puts on some gloves and starts going through EVERYTHING I have in my bag..

“Sir did you pack everything here yourself?”

Me: yes, positive!

(I forgot that I had a small bag with basically two high heels, a dress and some girly stuff that belonged to my friend that moved to Melbourne 2 weeks before me..)

He pulls out one of the high heels and just looks at me..

I giggle and tell him that it belongs to my friend who bla bla bla bla..

After like 15minutes he’d basically gone through every tiny bit in my bag..

Then he calls me up from where I was sitting and brings up a pair of sneakers I had my bag.. they had like a TINY bit of dirt at the bottom cause I wore them a few days before and he points at the dirt with his pen and says with a pissed off tone “SIR YOU DO KNOW IT’S ILLEGAL TO BRING SOIL INTO THE COUNTRY??”

… I was like.. are you ****ing kidding me? You can’t be serious… that’s just some dirt that’s cought in there.. you expect me to clean it with my toothbrush just to bring it through the damn security?

Security guy brings up his radio, “Matt can you come to station 5″

This fat bald dude walks up to the table after a minute and takes my sneakers.. I get told to put all my stuff back into the bag and follow him.. after 10minutes I get them back.. soaking wet from some anti-germ bath that he sad was crucial.. I can’t even explain how pissed off I was!”

What’s the best thing about being a TCK?

Hey everyone, I’m wondering what are the positive aspects of being a TCK? I know there are quite a few pros that we tend to forget or take for granted.

What do you like most about being a TCK? What has the experience given you?

If you’ve lived under a rock and never heard of Russel Peters, you’re in for a treat. If you’ve watched this before, then you know it’s worth watching it over again.

Some exciting news. He’s gonna have his own sitcom soon!!

New sitcom on FOX

In September 2007, it was confirmed that Peters made a deal with FOX to develop a new sitcom, based on his experience of living in Canada. Peters says, “It’s really a snapshot of where my family maybe was ten years ago.”, and he ensures that the sitcom is “Something that will be funny and honest.”[7][8]

This is a fun forum game and also a way to get to know each other.

All you have to do is say a random fact about the person who posted before you. Don’t worry it doesn’t need to be true. You can say that I only have nine toes for all I care. Simple right? So in an effort to get to know each other more people you can correct the “fact” in your own post.

Where Are You From?

“Where are you from?”

It seems like a common question which I get asked quite a lot. That question doesn’t bother me when I’m settled and people know me. But you remember what it’s like when you’re the new kid on the block, you get a new job, or you’re in a new school, and you have to ‘explain’ where you’re from for the first time. Ugh.

Sometimes I’m not quite sure what to reply, because it seems like I have to improvise depending on my current circumstance! My reply always depends on who is asking, how (s)he is asking, my mood and whether they’re mono-cultural.

So here’s where I’m from:

Born in: England
Parents: French and English
Lived in: Kuwait,Yemen, Los Angeles, France, Canada
Languages: English, French, some Arabic

My short answer is “I’m from X, but I’ve traveled a lot as a kid, so I’m from plenty of countries.” They’re either interested to find out more, or they’re satisfied with the answer.

So, where are you from and what do you say?

Home is not where the heart is

Home isn’t necessarily where the heart is. Because the heart is fickle and tends to cling to the past. A past scattered throughout many countries and places. Maybe the heart is seduced by a specific culture of preference, a country, or a people. But that isn’t home. Those are memories. We desperately cling to what we know, a feeling of belonging, a sense of security, which can be found in memories and nostalgia. That isn’t home; it’s the illusion of home.

So where is home? Home is where you belong. Someone told me a story about a man who was in a coma for many years, and woke up to find everyone he knew has died. He was home, but no one recognized him. “Give me friends, or give me death”, he said. What is home if no one recognizes or cares for you? In the end, I’m not sure it matters where you live, as long as you have a home, with people you love. Which can be found in the people you surround yourself with – your family, your friends, and a community who shares your values. That is home.
