For Uncle Dan…
This is from an article in the Jakarta Post, dated July 7, 2008 (Paulette and Brice, this is an article I would highly suggest you also read).

It ends so:
– The writer, an 11th grader at the Jakarta International School, was an intern at The Jakarta Post.
Did you know he is a TCK?

End of the fairytale for Adamson

Andrew Adamson. Photo / Brett Phibbs
For Andrew Adamson, the time has come to put away childish things.
The Auckland-born director of the first two Shrek films and the first two episodes of the Chronicles of Narnia series has shown he’s the master of fairytale family fare. The international box office for his four films as director stands at US$2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) and counting.
<snip>
Adamson was born in Auckland, but spent much of his early life in Papua New Guinea after his family shifted there for his father’s university work. But he is looking forward to putting down roots in the city again.
“I’ve lived longer in Los Angeles than anywhere else in my life and for a while I have to say I felt relatively disconnected from Auckland because I grew up in Papua New Guinea. Although my parents have been here for quite a while and most of my family have been here, it’s not really until I had kids that this became home again.”
I wonder if he “knows” he is a TCK!

Just Call Him Madam
Fashion designer Ivan Gunawan’s camp antics are out of the closet and proving a ratings success on prime-time television. The latest in the long line of gender-bending Indonesian entertainers, he tells Bruce Emond about not playing it straight.

You have to read a ways down into the article to find out he is a TCK!

Conference….and survey!
A while back, I posted about attending the F.I.G.T. conference (www.figt.org). I truly am sorry for those of you who read about it, but did not go to the conference! What an amazing time!
I don’t know if it is possible to say in a couple of sentences all that is experienced at such a conference. I got to meet so many great folks - many of them fellow TCKs - and ended up wishing the conference would last longer so I could have time to get to know more of the fellow attendees. I got to meet Paulette and chat with her, catch up with Ruth van Reken, talk with Norma McCaig (who started Global Nomads), and had a GREAT TIME! One of the exciting things was the establishment of the TCK Research Team. Most of those on the team are young TCKs - bringing with them new perspectives and ideas.
Another super benefit from the conference is meeting some of the authors who write about TCKs. Robin Pascoe is one of those well-known authors (www.expatexpert.com) and she does an enormous amount of travel and speaking - helping expat families all over the world! While at the conference, when everything at the registration table appeared to be in total chaos, Robin came to the rescue - providing coffee at very crucial moments (saving me from losing my mind).
I would like each of you (who read this blog) to go to Robin’s website and participate in a survey which she has posted on there (http://www.expatexpert.com/survey). When you participate in the survey, you are helping me tell Robin “Thank you” - for all her insight into TCKs and their expat parents via her writing, and for those wonderful cups of coffee at the FIGT conference!

TCK Magazine
Hey ya’ll…just wanted to take a few minutes to introduce a super great magazine! This magazine was designed specifically for TCKs from all over the world. The articles are written by TCKs for fellow TCKs. It covers all kinds of topics - and include book reviews (on books written by TCKs), a travel section (called Row 15, Seat D), poetry, and even cartoons (Small World by Andy Kerr - TCK from Spain).
The name of this great magazine is “Among Worlds” and I happen to be the most blessed person in the world cuz I get to be the Editor - and get to read all the articles before anyone else!
Where can you find it? Well…you can go to www.interactionintl.org/amongworlds.asp to see what it is about, and then click on “Store” to order the magazine. You can also read about some of the authors (and some of my posts) at www.amongworlds.blogspot.com.
I am always on the look-out for writers, artists, poets, book-reviewers, etc. so would be more than happy to talk with you should any of you be interested (I sure hope you are as there are some great stories on this site!).
Here are some of the comments we have received (and posted in our “Mail Bag”):
“I read every edition of “Among Worlds” from cover to cover - sometimes with tears in my eyes and an ache in my heart, sometimes with a smile on my lips and a feeling of ‘Yeah - I know exactly what you are talking about!’”
“I was wanting to write and tell you how much I enjoyed the current issue of Among Worlds. I read every word, and the columns brought back so many memories of my funny/embarrassing cultural gaffes. I think it was Deb’s article that listed the different culture types — fascinating to try to see where I used to fit, where people around me fit, and where I fit now. No wonder I’m so uncomfortable!”
“I LOVED the last issue of Among Worlds. I really felt it hit on some key issues for TCKs, ones that haven’t been discussed very much. In my own process of healing and helping others through healing of trauma, I felt this issue was right on the money. Thanks to all the contributors.”
“My friend called me this morning. His first issue of Among Worlds arrived in the mail yesterday. He started looking at it during breakfast this morning, and he didn’t stop reading until he had read the whole magazine. Then he had his wife read a couple of the articles. I heard a lot of emotion in his voice when he called to say “thanks”. I just want you to know that you have made a difference for another TCK.”
“I just received my first issue of Among Worlds magazine, and I LOVE IT! Thank you SO much for this publication. It really touched my heart in a lot of places.”
“Thanks so much for sending those issues so quickly! When I saw that they’d arrived, I was so thrilled and ripped open the package to read as much as I could as quickly as I could.”
“I absolutely love your magazine and see it in many ways as a “life line” to understanding myself.”
I think those comments speak for the magazine! I wish I could take credit for all of that - but I must continue eating my share of humble-pie and giving the credit to those who truly deserve it: the authors and my graphic artist! As I said, I get the pleasure of reading the articles first - and then making them look and sound real good on paper (without losing their “voice”).
Thanks Brice for allowing me to do a little promo here for the magazine! Oh…before I forget….it also is a great gift to give a fellow TCK (or a sibling, cousin, parent, etc.)!!!
