My name is Grace and I am a Korean TCK who lived in Seoul, LA, Hong Kong, Chicago and currently residing in New York City.
I’m studying animation in graduate school right now and last semester I made a mini-thesis project titled “Listen: A Conversation (TCK story).”
In this animation a conversation between two TCKs reflects the multi-cultured world Third Culture Kids live in. It was a great opportunity to present to my fellow classmates what TCK is all about.
Hi everyone!
My name is Grace Park and I am, like everyone here, a certified TCK.
I lived in 3 countries(Korea, America, Hong Kong), gone through 3 educational system (Korean, American, British) and lived in 5 cities throughout my life (Seoul, LA, Hong Kong, Chicago, New York).
Right now I’m in graduate school in New York and I’m currently working on an typographic animation piece that deals with TCK people like me communicating in multiple languages.
I find the best person to talk to is someone who is perfectly fluent in English, Korean and also someone who might know some Cantonese and British culture (such as my sister who grew up with me). I feel that I can express myself fully when I am able to switch sentences and words between languages.
I would like to know how other TCKs experience verbal communication in their lives. Do you feel frustrated at times using only one language? When you meet someone who can speak multiple languages like yourself, do you feel liberated?
