Coping

Does anyone else feel like they sometimes lean on their TCKness as a way of coping? It’s weird, but I was in the US last year as an exchange student and I was happy there, so my TCKness took a backseat and I just had fun being like everyone else talking about the same things and it was awesome.

But now I’m back in the UK where I have never been happy, and I did try to indentify with the others but again it didn’t happen and now I’m back to leaning on my TCKness to explain why I’m so different and why I seem to have nothing in common with all my friends. I’ve been thinking about this for a few days and I just had to ask lol. Is it just me who does this when I’m unhappy somewhere?

Dissertation Help

Hey everyone!

I was just wondering, is there anyone on here who has done or is currently doing undergraduate research projects on TCKs and/or Expats? I’m in the process of starting, but I’m having trouble narrowing my focus and I was wondering how other people did it? Like I keep changing my title every few days and it makes it difficult to write a questionnaire when my focus keeps changing. At the moment, my focus is on the after effects of the experience and the difficulty of repatriation/culture shock. My big problem is my supervisors want me to stick to a specific nationality group living in a specific area, and I have major issues with this. It’s gonna be so incredibly difficult for me to research something that specific for reasons I’m sure you all understand. I’m gonna talk to my supervisor about that tomorrow. Thanks guys!

Help Needed!

Hey all!

Wow, I haven’t been on here in a looonng time. I’ve kind of put the TCK part of myself in the back of my mind for the last few months and have been focusing on what I have in common with non-TCKs. Of course now I’m back in England my ‘home’ country and it’s not working so much anymore lol I can’t wait to pick up and leave. The reason I’m writing this post is because I am now in my final year of college and I now am writing my dissertation. My working title so far is “Cultural integration and the effect of living in the middle east on identity”. I wanted it to be wider but my professors narrowed it down that way for me.

So what I need to know is, can anybody think of any specific literature or research relating to this? The plan is to send out questionnaires to both TCKs over 16 and to expatriates who lived in the Middle East, or still live there, for some time. So my dissertation will be analyzing the data I get from the study, and also be part literature review including some extensive information about TCKs and the expatriate lifestyle. Which means I also need to ask, are there many people on here with some sort of British background who lived in the Midde East at any time in their lives? I already personally know a few, but it would be great if I could find more. I would like it to be more than just British, but since I’m in England they want to me to specify and focus on British people. Any help you guys can give me would be fantastic.

Letting go

Hey guys.

After everything that’s happened to me over the last couple months and my impending departure from my current ‘home’, I’ve been thinking about me and relationships. I’ve noticed a pattern that whenever I’m leaving soon, or was never staying long, I always pulled back and in some cases like this time I cut off friendships totally without meaning to. I was wondering if anyone else had problems with this?

Valentine’s Day Celebrations

Hey everyone!

I haven’t been on here in months lol. It’s been too long. Anyways! I came here to ask everyone available for some TCK based information.

In my research class we are looking at Valentine’s Day in the United States, which I did, and now I would like to compare it with the rest of the world. I thought who better than to ask but TCKs :)

Please answer my post by telling me what countries you’ve lived in, was Valentine’s Day or something equivilant celebrated, and if so how was it celebrated? Thanks guys :)

Introducing Charm!

Hey everyone! I’ve actually been on here a while and felt like writing something, as I’m bored and am currently obsessed with Lolcats thanks to Brice lol.

So anyway, I’m Charm and I was born in England and I moved to Saudi Arabia when I was 6 months old, where my dad was already working. My dad is also a TCK (English/Welsh) but he’s happy just calling himself an African after growing up in Zambia for 20 years, and his mom was Welsh and Dad English. My mom is from Philippines, she’s not a TCK, although she did travel a lot after college which is how she met my dad lol. So I am ethnically English/Welsh/Filipina.

After living in Saudi we repatriated to England when I was 10. We all hated it lol so we moved to Bahrain for several years. For some reason I can’t think of anymore, I moved to a British boarding school for a few months and was absolutely miserable, so I returned to Bahrain. I returned again to England for a gap year and to start college and I finished my first year there. I’m currently doing my second year in college in New York state in the US. We also spent many many summers and christmasses in Philippines, and we have a house there but don’t actually live there.

Hmm, what else? I like doing charity work in my spare time. For fun, which the people doing community service there can’t seem to understand lol. I can’t think of anything else to ramble about so I’ll just wrap it up lol. Hey everyone!
