And I thought, “Oh my God, this is how I’m gonna die!”

LOL okay so this is probably one of the worst winter days I’ve ever had to go through LOL.

I woke up at 6 am as usual, did whatever it is I do in the morning before school, and left home for the bus stop with my sister at 7 10 am, the usual time. We were about 20 metres away from the bus stop when the bus left the stop. TWENTY METRES! And we were walking towards it, and the bus driver saw us. I KNOW he saw us; he just didn’t stop. Anyways, we walked on, knowing that there would be another bus coming in probably 5 mins. But it never came. My sister and I and a couple of other students waited and waited for the transit bus. It NEVER came. We waited for 45 minutes for nothing. And it’s -28C - not including the wind chill. And I knew I couldn’t call a cab cause I didn’t have minutes on my phone. The whole time I was waiting, when I started to get really cold, I was thinking, “Oh my god, this is how I’m gonna die - hypothermia! This is how I’m gonna die! Holy crap.” I was shivering by the time my sister and I decided to leave the stop to go back home. We walked another 10 minutes to our house (with the snow falling on my face), and by the time I got to my room, to curl up in my bed, I was shivering violently and my legs, feet, face and arms were numb. Now I know what mild to moderate hypothermia feels like. It’s not fun. I trembled in my bed for 20 minutes, and decided to stay home while my sister went on to school. I still have a little bit of a headache and is really really mad about how the bus didn’t come and how cold it is here. I dunno what the transit company’s doing but it’s insane how they can just let students be late and die in the cold. Yay (not) that it’s snowing again today.

That takes me back. That was my morning schedule in high school, too, except that my school bus was a charter bus and not public transport. I remember one morning I went out to the bus stop in the dead of winter and waited for almost an hour. There was two feet of snow on the ground and it was still snowing heavily. I huddled in the doorway by my bus stop and waited until I couldn’t feel my feet anymore. My mother felt so bad for me that she let me stay home. (Apparently the bus did come maybe fifteen minutes later, but less than half of us kids were on it. Those who did go got to school an hour late.)

    Still, I love snow.

    Sorry you almost died!

You poor thing. I have some bad school bus memories I dreamt about for years after I left school, but since I was in the Philippines it had nothing to do with hypothermia.
