Ahem, I’d like to indroduce…myself

I am writing this slowly, I cut my finger today:(

HI! My name is Rachel! I am a CCK (college age) who grew up in Texas as a PK. (Recently transitioned back to TX a few months ago) Most of my family’s friends were from Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, Kenya, Chad, Korea, Taiwan, Jordan, Russia, China, Chile, St Lucia….ect ect ect  (Actually, I wasn’t around American culture much at all until I was 12 or 13)

Struggles: I feel out of place. (I have an unfulfilled travel itch as well) And transparently, I don’t have a clue what to do with my life anymore. I have friends here in Texas, but I have a hard time relating to them. I have found a way to kind of fix that though…I started teaching them how to cook ethnic foods and they, in turn, are teaching me things. It’s fun!! I’m trying really hard not to focus on the negative, but to learn to live!

Other than that, I’m a cheerful, laughing kind of person. I only have two things I don’t like to eat. Green peas and vine leaves. (I had vine leaves in a meal last year; they were really bitter) Sorry I’m sortof random…I didn’t realize how many things I could say in an introduction!

I look forward to getting to know you all better! See you later!

Rachel

Hi Rachel, I’m Rachel too :D Welcome (I just joined last week, but that’s longer in a TCK timeframe :D)

I liked your post. Sorry you cut your finger :| I did that the other day and was so upset I couldn’t play piano as well. I still played though, that’s how I am, stubborn.

Did you learn any other languages growing up among so many cultures, or did you all just speak English? People always ask me how many languages I know because I grew up in Egypt & Lebanon & West Africa but everyone always spoke English to me and I studied at home, so I only know English, much to my dismay.

Anyway, I was both an MK and PK, so I know what it’s like. And since I can talk for forever, I’ll end b4 I do! This site is great for realising you’re normal even though you’re different from so many people around you. I’m just realising from reading people’s essays/blogs how much being a TCK/CCK changes you and other people don’t understand because they grew up differently and don’t have the same, often broader perspective.

    Hope you have fun here!

    Hi Rachel, welcome to tckid!

hahaha, green peas and vine leaves! OK, here’s one thing I just CANNOT eat… Brussel sprouts.

What do you enjoy cooking? Have you ever tried Panettone? IT’S DELICIOUS!!

I love your idea of showing people you can’t relate to how to cook, that’s an excellent way to bond! If they’re open to it, teach them more things from different cultures!

Have you read the TCK book yet? There are loads of tips on feeling out of place and belonging, making friends, etc. It’s on the group’s homepage.

    Anyway, heres your picture welcome!

I recently started a cooking site to teach people how to cook from various cuisines, if you want to share your recipes online too ^^ It’s in need of expansion pretty bad, and the more the merrier… :)

    Welcome!

Why hello! In an attempt to put off writing this materials lab write up, i’m going to make my first welcome in MONTHS haha.. WELCOME!! what exactly did you do to cut your finger??.. i’ve got two on my left index from hastily chopping veggies with a cleaver and not reallly paying attention.. would’ve thought i’d learn after ONE cut.. but no no.. i got two haha… needless to say my veggies were a tad bloody.. but i was cooking for myself so it was all good haha…

Vine leaves are awesome! haha.. sorry, I just eat nearly everything. I’m a far cry from the picky little kid i used to me.. now i devour everything, as long as someone else eats it first and shows me its ok to eat haha… and frozen peas! COME ON!! One of the most awesome things ever! You’re like my japanese flatmate, she picks the peas out of stuff when we cook hahaha… anyway i’m kinda ranting.. it’s been a while since i’ve posted anything haha… ANYWAY..

WELCOME! and come to the chatroom we’re all so much more awesome live! haha

    P.S
Brice that chick photo is scary…. if i saw that thing i’d run very quickly in the opposite direction…. haha…
