About Me

Hi Everyone,

I’m an Australian/American. Both my parents are Australian but, I was born in the US which gives me dual nationality. I grew up in theNew York and Houston in the US, Canberra in Australia, Lagos in Nigeria, Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and, Islamabad in Pakistan.  As an adult I’ve lived in Brisbane, Canberra, Islamabad, New York and Guangzhou.

Growing up I always felt more comfortable and happier living in Nigeria, PNG or Pakistan or transitting through places like Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia than I was in Australia or the US.

These days I’m in Canberra and I’ve almost finished my Grad Dip in Secondary Education which qualifies me as a history/geography/social science teacher. I’ve been a professional student for quite some time. So far I’ve recieved a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Asian Studies and a Masters of International and Community Development.

I’m hoping to work for an International NGO in relation to education and child protection or teach in an International School. Although I would also like to teach Indigenous Australians and newly arrived refugees and give teaching in New Zealand a go.

So many plans. So many countries. So little time.

Becks

Hey hey — whoa! Another dual citizen Us/Aust holder!! I thought that i was the only one!
    My Dad’s Australian too.

I live in Sydney. And i understand what you mean about being comfortable outside the passport countries. I know that i would not feel all that comfortable being back in LA, but part of me feels like i need to. Australia as well — i’ve been here too long! When you tell someone you’re from Australia or the US they expect you to know things subconsciously — even if they do not realise that they expect things from you *we* do.

Canberra… the home of DFAT… and some awesome museums (did you SEE that Black Hawk helicopter?! So cool!). As you ca tell, i have only seen the ‘touristy’ aspects of the capital.

Q - do you like Vegemite?

    Hey Becks!

May I adopt your phrase (”So many plans. So many countries. So little time.”)? I would love to use it in the Among Worlds magazine - create a side-bar with TCK “sayings”. Anyone else out there in TCK-land have a phrase or statement/saying you use that is unmistakably TCK? Another phrase I like is “Acceptance immediate, no explanations needed” when talking about why TCKs like to hang out together.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for your welcomes.

Margie, feel free to use the saying. Sounds like I need to check out your magazine.

Isa, there are actually quite a few of us Australian Americans or American Australians out there. I went to school with a few in Pakistan but most of them have decided to settle in the US. That’s largely because most of our friends end up there for college and so forth.

Yep, Canberra is the home of DFAT which is why I love here. My Dad worked for them for 38 years. He’s only been retired for a month or two. And, yes I do like vegemite but, I can also live without it unlike some Aussies I’ve met. I so know what you mean about being in Australia too long.
