A fellow TCK needs your help!

Hi everybody!

I am a fellow third culture kid who is currently working on her final year dissertation at university. It is all about global nomadism/third culture kids and how identities are affected…basically US! I would really appreciate as many people as possible filling in a questionnaire for me. It is really simple and should only take you a few minutes. There are a couple of ways to get your answers back to me: 1) just reply on this discussion board, or 2)  email me your answers at fa05079@qmul.ac.uk

PLEASE TAKE A TINY BIT OF YOUR DAY AND HELP ME.

Here is the questionnaire:

Put an x in the ( ) after your chosen answer.
Please give as much detail as possible for longer questions.
Thank you!

Hi Irish faith! Welcome to tckid :)

I’ll be responding to your questionnaire shortly but I thought I’d let you know about http://surveymonkey.com it will help you simplify collecting answers and I highly recommend it. A member here recently posted a TCK survey, so you can see an example of this.

How has being a Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid affected your relationships with others?
e.g. Have the cycle of separations effected friendships? Yes I find it diffficult to make close friends I don’t tsnd to trust people with much emotional knowledge of me as somewhere in my mind I will be leaving them shortly whether this is true or not. THe few friends that are close I have a hard time keeping in contact with it is easier to not write as somewherein my mind tha makes it seem it never happened. Facebook is helping me lots with this problem.

How has being a Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid effected key life decisions?
e.g. where you went to school, career choices etc.
At 26 I have still not excatly decided on my career choice but I think that it wil be greatly effected. I do not feel I could just get a job to make money (although I do need money) I want my job to make a difference in the world that I have seen. The school I wnet to had lots of TCKs that is why I went there.

Is being a Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid a good or a bad thing?
e.g. Would you choose otherwise? Please explain your answer:I really enjoy being a TCK there are things that I found hard but I figure everyones life has problems and things that are hard in it hte issues I deal with are jsut different then thiers and if it is a matter of deciding which issues to deal with I sprefer the ones I have. I loved growing up in different places most of the time and looking back I would not want it otherwise.

Is nationality a key factor in your sense of identity?
Sometimes I feel rather loyal to both Jordan and Canada and will defend each country when in the other. Sometimes I think at least on global issues taht I am more loyal to Jordan thier policies make so much more sence to me. I am Canadian and I love being Canadian however sometimes I don’t like the way our government works.

    Peers (3 )

    Country of Birth ( 5)
If you rate by country I would go
    Canada
    Jordan
    Yemem
UAE ( I don’t really remember it but sometimes it affects how my parents behave.)
Will you continue to move around during your life?
Probebly although i hope to live in one place for a while to see how I like it.
What do you think you have gained through your Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid experience?
e.g. linguistic ability, intercultural communication etc. I think I have a good grasp of how cultures forma and the thing that are importenat in them. I can usually sence when people are uncomfortable (having been so a lot myself) I usually find it easy to read peopels emotions and body language having gone to a country where I couldn’t rememebr the language when I was 12. I learned to read what people expected of me through what I felt and the emotions they portrayed. I hate talking on phones and I think the main reason is I can’t see the person I am talking to it is very hard to read someone over the phone.

How has being a Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid affected your relationships with others?
e.g. Have the cycle of separations effected friendships?
For sure. Usually after a few years after moving from a country or having friends move, the correspondence dies down and I slowly move on, make new friends. I sort of realize that I probably will never see my old friends again, esp. the ones that go off to all corners of the globe so the contact with them kind of peters out.

How has being a Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid effected key life decisions?
e.g. where you went to school, career choices etc.

I’m doing the same work my parents do which is aid work. It brings me to all sorts of places. I don’t think I could have a job that doesn’t involve travel. So because of my upbringing I now can never settle down. I get itchy feet after a few years, have to move on, try out different places, change of scenery.

Is being a Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid a good or a bad thing?
e.g. Would you choose otherwise? Please explain your answer:
It’s a good thing. I’ve experienced all sorts of things that I never would have had i been in one place. I’ve done alot, been to many different places, I can adapt to all sorts of cultures. I think I’m more aware of current events and have more of an understanding of the different things happening around the world, not just from the news, but first hand, or having it related to me by someone from that area. So in that way i think it’s made me more openminded, have more of a balanced judgment of cultures, religions, etc.
Is nationality a key factor in your sense of identity?
    definitely not

What do you think you have gained through your Global Nomad/Third Culture Kid experience?
e.g. linguistic ability, intercultural communication etc.

intercultural communication. I’m able to adapt to wherever it is i go, gosh there’s too much to say!!
could spend all day explaining everything gained!
