A big hello to one and all!
Before yesterday I had never heard of the terms CCK or TCK. Head in the Clouds or Head in the Sand, I don’t know, but now I am aware, I thought I might dip my toe in the water.
I was born in Davao City on Mindanao, the southern grouping of islands in the Philippines. My mum is Filipina and my father is English. He was working on the oil rigs in the South China sea at that time and was based in Manila, where he met mum.
I spent a year in Davao before we upped sticks and moved to Changi in Singapore. We spent 6 and a half years there before moving back to the Philippines for 2 years. KL for a year and a half after and Jakarta for a year. It sounds quite turbulent but the big move was to England and the total culture shock that ensued. I mean the cold was unbearable! We spent about three years there which was great as my fathers main aim was to make me aware of that side of my heritage. However, before long we moved again to the Philippines for 2 years before finally moving back to Europe, Torremolinos in Spain for 1 year then eventually to Bristol in England where I finished my schooling. I finally washed up in London where i am currrently working in the hospitality industry.
This is my first time doing this and look forward to making contact.

Welcome to tckid, Jason! You discovered yesterday that you’re a TCK? I’m really happy for you, I remember when I first discovered about this, I had a very emotional few days… how did you find out you were a TCK? I’d love to know!
There are a lot of TCKs here who grew up in Jakarta and the Philippines.
You’re in London? Ah.. I just moved from England early this year to Canada. Didn’t like it there that much.
There are a lot of amazing stories on the forum that you’ll probably relate to.

Thanks for welcoming me Julie. I’m going to Edinburgh today and promised myself a week of no phone/electronic/paper communication to fully recharge my batteries after a hectic year, but once I’m back I’ll drop in to the chatroom and see who’s around. Have a great Christmas!

Thanks Brice! I am still getting used to thinking about myself as a TCK. A lot of questions I have been asking myself over the years may be answered with what I might find here.
I kind of know what you mean about England, it does tend to wear you out a little, especially London. Where in Canada are you? We have some old family friends in Medicine Hat and in Vancouver. Its a country that I will definitely visit in 2008.
Anyway, thanks for the threads. I will have a good look at them.

Jason, I’m actually in Vancouver! Where exactly does your family live? I live in the West end.
I really enjoy it here a lot more than London, I hope you come visit in 08.
By the way, since you just discovered you’re a TCK, I highly recommend you get the book. It answers a lot of the questions you’re probably having.
You can read an extensive review and overview of the content here:
http://www.tckid.com/third-culture-kids-book.html
and a thread about it here with tckid members’ opinions:

I hope that helps and welcome to the group!
